What started as a "routine" re-grout and seal job turned expensive very quickly when we realized that my shower pan had failed and had saturated the subfloor.
After a call with the owner, he re-bid the job and his installer completed the work to our satisfaction.
The reason why a "C" given for price was that we were not able to obtain competitive bids due to the urgency of the situation and therefore do not know if the price was higher or lower than what others would have quoted.
"When I estimate a job the square footage and the tile size and grout size how clean or dirty the grout and or tiles are how much caulking needs to be removed ect... is factored in to the price I give. The time involved is a guess. I cant know easy or hard it will be to remove the grout and caulking, or how esay or hard it will be to clean the tiles ect... I estimated your job to be 2 1/2 days ( in your home 3 days ) I was wrong this time but that wasn't the basis for the price you were given. I did give you a 10% discount because I guessed wrong. Thank you for saying the job quality is good because you rated that a B. Responsiveness and Punctuality was also given a B but we were there on time and when we said we would be there. You called us I came out did the estimate you then scheduled the job Trae came out and did a good job. I thought that those should be A's. Most of the jobs I estimate are closer to the time I am estimating, sometimes we are done early and some times we are done later in the end I am "estimating" what I think it will be and I am sorry I was wrong."
"I am not sure how this happened. When an estimate is scheduled the computer auto generates an email and sends it to you confirming the date of the appointment and then saves the email as a communicatios log entry. There isn't a record that the email was sent to you. What this means is according to our records you did not set up an appointment and thats why I didnt know about it. My appologies and I will have my scheduler contact you."
The customer does not hold the burden to provide paychecks to his employee when it was the incompetencies of his office that messed up our business relationship.
I was able to find another Grout Company who did a fantastic job with a much quicker turn around time and $300 cheaper. Bruce's haughty and demeaning attitude following this very negative experiene has me all the more happy I did not let his company back in my home.
"I had told you that it is difficult to keep employees working and if you had used another company to provide you service 2 weeks before that you should have called me to cancel and not wait till the day we show up to tell me that you cancelled. It is hard to keep people working so they have paychecks. I estimated the work on May 3oth and we spoke and or emailed or spoke with the window contractor quite a few times in that time according to the window contractor you had the window installed about 2 weeks ago the date as I type is 9-4-2012. On July 16th you called and let us know you were interested in having the work done. I had to wait for the window to be installed before I could do our work. You had the window installed aprox 2 weeks ago and we were scheduled to come out 1 week ago. So that is 1 week later not a month and a half. I think reponsiveness should be an A because that is less than the 3 weeks that I told you it could be. The price would have been $1225.00 to rebuild half the wall and a bunch of bullnose on your tub and that is replacing the studs and the backer boards retiling and regrouting the enire tub. You might think that is a price I think that is a fair price you can always find someone cheaper I will never cut corners and I will never use cheap products to make repairs. I dont pretend to be the cheapest however I am the best and I will be there if anything goes wrong to stand behind what we do. You gave me a bad report because I called you and let you know that cancelling the day a job is to start is bad when you knew 2 weeks prior and could have cancelled then; because it is hard. You just had to send an email. Have a wonderful day and god bless"
All work was performed as promised. Our tile areas look like new- no, better than when it was new! We are very pleased. Rick did the entire job working alone. He is a very hard and steady-working technician. He did everything that was promised. We would definitely recommend the restoration work from Grout Medic.
I sent him this email (direct quote, in it's entirety):
Dear Bruce,
Thank you very much for your time and estimate. I am sorry to inform
you that we will be remodeling with another company.
With all due respect, I cannot patronize a business that supports
Amendment One.
I hope you have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Nicole Dautel
He sent me this reply (direct quote, in it's entirety):
You are determining my ability to perform my job based on my political affiliation. Now that's liberal tolerance. You will tolerate anyone's beliefs and or ideas as long as they are not Christian conservatives. You should be ashamed.
The Grout Medic
Needless to say, I found this behavior highly unprofessional on several levels. I am disappointed in a company that has received such high reviews on Angie's list.
"I am sorry that you disagree with me on politics; however that has nothing to do with The Grout Medic. The member was only there for a short period of time and not involved in the estimate. I was not dimissive I gave you and your partner a good estimate to repair wallboard and reset tiles and regrout the walls of your tub surround. The price I believe to be fair and your tub surround would be just like new when I was done. If you found someone cheaper good luck because you do not have to hire The Grout Medic. We did not discuss the upcoming election, myself and your partner discussed the upcoming vote on the constitutional amendment and I did not say it was homosexuality is disgusting. My view of the world is differant than yours and we live in the United States of America and I served in the United States Navy to defend your right to think differant if you choose too. That does not give you the right to try and smear my name or my company by telling false tales. Even more so now, you should be ashamed. I believe you have the right to pursue happiness in anyway you find as long as you do not hurt other people. There are many things in this world I do not agree with, that does not mean I find them disgusting. Mature adults sometimes disagree but we should respect each others views and not slander those who you disagree with."
The job took 2 people working 4 days to finish. They reviewed the work to be done, were polite, very neat and cleaned up after. Taking out the exisiting shower door damaged some of the tiling, and also it was found that minor repair work needed to be done to the rotting wood under the curb. This added $180 to my estimate. I was able to find a close match at Home Depot to replace the few damaged tiles and they blended in well. Everything else went according to plan. All grout and caulking was replaced sealed, tiles cleaned and sealed and the shower door replaced. It was fairly expensive to have all this done but I feel as if I have new bathrooms and am very pleased with the job.
On the first day, Wes and Greg arrived right on time and got to work. Greg's part of the job only took two days, but Wes was with us all week, doing the larger of the two jobs (demo and tile replacement). Greg did good work on the grout and tile repair. Wes also did excellent work. He paid a lot of attention to detail and seemed very committed to doing a quality job. Both men were pleasant and professional.
The owner, Bruce, did the initial estimate and was very thorough. He measured carefully and even suggested some additional services ? color coordinated caulking ? that could be done at the same time to improve the overall look of the kitchen. The estimate outlined exactly what was to be done and the price was fair.
On the day that the work was done, the technician (Rick) arrived on time, knew what needed to be done and got right to work. Throughout the process, he was very friendly and helpful, answering our questions and explaining what he was doing. The work was high quality and completed as promised.
Our rejuvenated grout looks great! We are very pleased with Grout Medic and will use them again.
