Description of Work: I love this company. One of the owners came to my house after hours with a bag of parts and tried to eke a little more life out of my 36-year-old A/C unit until the parts came in for my new unit. He really did get the temperature down a few degrees in our house, which was a welcome respite. Dawson & Dodd have been doing business in St. Louis for many, many years, and they have a great reputation that they want to keep. I was very impressed with the service we received.

Description of Work: We had such a HORRIBLE experience with our last heating & cooling company that I've become totally jaded about selecting companies, so I put out a call on Facebook for local friends to give the names of HVAC companies they would recommend. Dawson-Dodd won, hands-down, with the most endorsements from people we trust. We already had an appointment scheduled with another company that charged a $95 service fee, so we quickly cancelled it and went with Dawson-Dodd. (This in August, at the most miserable height of the St. Louis heat.)||I came home from work to find the A/C running again, and the total bill was only $79. Yep -- only $79, which is the charge of their service call. The repair was an easy fix so it was covered under the service fee. Dawson-Dodd also offers an annual service plan, and I was so impressed by the ease with which they fixed our A/C (they could have told us anything at that point -- all we wanted was to be cool) that we will probably sign up to have them come out yearly for maintenance. I want to believe that most businesses are honest and competent, but I've been burned enough times that I have learned to be realistic. I think this company is a winner though... they came highly recommended, and so far, they have lived up to their reputation.

Description of Work: This company was selected by our house inspector to inspect our AC units before buying our house. They did multiple tests to see if freon was leaking. They did not find a leak. They also installed a drip try in the attic. About a year after they left, our entire AC unit failed. We had another company come in and they had to replace freon that we leaking. We unfortunately had to replace the entire system.

Description of Work: The services were for our heat pump and air handler part of Unico system. The first service call was to check why the air handler would not shut off in January 2011. The service person found nothing wrong, told us we probably needed a new thermostat and left. the problem persisted. The next service call was in March 2011 and diagnosed a freon leak was causing the unit never to shut off, thermostat was fine. In June 2011, as part of normal service, noted on service call that the Unico coil needed to be replaced and added more freon because it was still leaking. In October 2011, finally removed coil to bring it to their shop with no hint when it might return. We did find they left live wires (220 volt) exposed by the furnace with no safety measures in place. Fortunately no one was electrocuted in the house or there was no fire due to the exposed wires. There was no "lock-out, tag-out" in place - I would think is a significant OSHA violation. Several phone calls were made to Dawson Dodd with no return calls as to when the unit might be ready. Our concern was with winter coming on and not having a functioning furnace for our main floor of the house. They finally came November 19, 2011 to reinstall the unit. The furnace was running and the service technician left. To my surprise, upon closer inspection of the furnace the evaporator unit had been disconnected and the insulated line coming from the heat pump outside was disconnected from the air handler. I called the company, told them of the disconnected part. He said "you won't need that until summer; asked for my patience and he said we'll come and reconnect the part. I couldn't believe it; we routinely use the heat pump during the milder winter temperatures to save money. Dawson Dodd just blew me off. I am severely disappointed and am not renewing my service contract.

This was a major project. The biggest challenge was to decide how to configure the system so that we could have comfortable temperatures on both floors. Mark provided a detailed proposal (2 pages) and recommended two separate systems with thermostats on each floor using 13 seer condensing units and 90% Rudd furnaces. The old ductwork in the basement had to be removed first by an asbestos removal company. The installation took almost 2 weeks and we were without heat for several days. There wasn't enough support at the beginning of the project but once the team focused everything moved smoothly. The house is over a 100 years old and the old system was at least 30 years old. Everything was cleaned up at the end of each day and all the debris was hauled away in a timely manner. We had two follow up activities and both were handled in a professional and timely manner. We've had the system now for 10 months and the design has worked perfectly. We are very satisfied!!
Description of Work: Installed new heating and cooling units for two floors of a house built in 1892. The current system was an interconnected for the two floors with a thermostat on the first floor by the front door. The temperature varied about 7-8 degrees between the first and second floor. We had 5 estimates and Dawson Dodd was the highest. Dawson Dodd installed a new system for a neighbor who was very satisfied.

We called for service on a Saturday and left a message with their answering service. They called back Monday morning and we were able to arrange a time between 2 and 4 pm the following day (Tuesday) for the work to be done. They offered to give me a call a half hour before arrival so that I could leave work and meet them at my house. My husband was able to get off work, so a half hour call wasn't necessary. They arrived at around 4 and completed the work at about 5pm. The technician, Justin, recommended that if the second floor unit didn't dry out properly with this service, that the drain pan is probably cracked and the A/C coil is likely in need of replacement.
Description of Work: Performed service required on two A/C units at my home. The second floor unit was leaking all over the floor. The first floor unit was not cooling and ice had built up on the exterior hose connecting the blower unit to the interior of the house. They cleaned the coils, cleared drains, checked filters, adjusted psi on both units and replaced the blower motor on one of the two units.

Completely smooth. They arrived about 8:30am and were done by lunch time. I was concerned about the basement carpet, so they wore boot covers when in the house.
Description of Work: Installed a new flue liner in our chimney, because the old one was too small and combustion gases from the hot water heater were leaking back into the basement instead of going up the chimney.

The technician was able to do the standard maintenance but was unable to determine the reason the 2nd floor unit was not functioning properly. He said he put a call into the Unico system and would get back to me, but never did. (He was really not very bright, and failed to take into account some pretty basic ideas like that running the 3rd floor unit would cause some cooling on the 2nd floor as well..duh). I called the office and got one of the main guys. He said he would have his best guy call the following week to arrange a time to come out. I waited 2 weeks but got no call. I called back and got the same story. He'll have the guy call me the following week. I got no call. Now it's cold, and I've pretty much given up. Unfortunately, after trying to find another company, I find that there are only a few that service the Unico system that we have, and the ones I called would not come into the city. So I'm kind of stuck.
Description of Work: The technician tuned up our 3 units and examined the 2nd floor unit because it was not cooling sufficiently.

Mark was our rep from start to finish. He was available for questions, and in working with us to get what we wanted within our budget. The crew came on time, worked efficiently and quietly, and cleaned up daily. Finished the work within the estimated time, but came back to finish some small details that needed attention. I was especially pleased that the crew was mindful of the pet on the premises, and that they did not smoke in, or too close to the house. Despite the working conditions and many obstacles, Chris and his crew get high marks from us for the great job done.

We've had a service contract with them since they were Intagliata - more than 12 years. The twice-yearly checkups are comprehensive, the workmen polite and clean, and they explain everything. Our service calls include one that was late Christmas Eve when the heating went, and they've always responded promptly. In one particularly sizzling summer, that was 36 hours, which seems pretty good at a time when A/Cs were dying all across town. A recent thermostat replacement was carefully done, and a good explanation was given.

THE GUY DID A BUNCH OF VOLTAGE MEASUREMENTS AND CLAIMED MY THERMOSTAT NEEDED REPLACING. I ASKED HIM FOR A PLAIN THERMOSTAT WITH NO BELLS OR WHISTLES, AND WAS TOLD HE DID NOT HAVE ONE, BUT WOULD GIVE ME AN UPGRADED THERMOSTAT FOR THE SAME PRICE. I CALLED A STORE LATER ON AND FOUND OUT THE THERMOSTAT HE CHARGED ME $58 ONLY COST $39.97. HE DID NOT TAKE MUCH TIME TO EXPLAIN HOW TO USE THE NEW THERMOSTAT AND THE TEMPERATURE KEEPS FLUCTUATING BY FOUR DEGREES.
