ISSUES:
1) Tom did not apply for any of the necessary permits. 4 hours into ripping a hole into my front yard with a bulldozer, the town inspector shut the project down. I had to basically take a day off of work to deal with it. Permits are the contractors job. This delayed the project 2-3 days while I was constantly on the phone with the city. It was not just the dumpster permit, it was zoning permits as well. One call to city hall by Tom before the project would have prevented the large bright orange stop work order on our lawn.
2) I am left with a VERY DANGEROUS SET OF STEPS THAT DON'T WORK! I hired Tom to build a set of steps on the side of my driveway. He constructed the steps in a way that the steps (made of stone) are always popping out of place, such that if someone is coming down the stairs, the stone pops and the person is in danger of falling down the stone steps.
First he denied that anything was wrong --- "that's how I build them all the time, I don't know why they are loose, they shouldn't be". Well they are loose and its irrelevant that Tom thinks that they shouldn't be. After hounding him for two weeks, he will show up, do a poor, quick and shoddy job fixing the steps, and they pop loose several days later. After 14 months of this, I am going to have to pay someone else $1000+ to fix Tom's shoddy work.
3) When placing the dumpster in my driveway, the dumpster was dropped incorrectly and put a huge crack/hole in my driveway that remains unrepaired.
I would not hire Tom again and I would not recommend him to anyone else. There are enough professionals out there that will get the job done well and professionally. Try someone else.

"I was happy to know we had won this project and was given the opportunity to work at the home. I knew about the permit for a dumpster in Clayton if the dumpster was going to be placed on the street, but this particular project we were placing it in the driveway, primarily because the driveway was going to be taken and out and a new slab poured along with the extention area of the driveway and therefore the dumpster would not be blocking the street for traffic. The city of Clayton, go to find out, wants a permit now for a dumpster anywhere on the property, thats a new change that I was not aware of, so Yes, I worked to get that resolved and got my crew back to work, I don't view this as a bad thing trying to keep the project moving along with out delays. The project turned out looking awesome. We deserved an A report."

Landscaping, Drain Pipe Installation
We contacted Tom again after his excellent work on his previous gutter job for us. We had a basic design plan for the yard, but wanted a professional to help with advice and to do the work. Tom and his crew were excellent again! Our only complication was a very bitter winter, which killed about 20 of our 70 plants/shrubs. He will return this fall to replace these plants. We will use his company to also help us maintain the mulching.

"This customer needed all of there gutters burried using PVC drain pipe out to a safe area in yard. Everything turned out working and looking very nice. They had a sump pump smaller drain pipe that was partially burried under the grass and it was hard to see, I missed it on the original walk through with me crew, only because I couldn't see it, we got it connected also. All is good."

Mr. Watson seemed to be a good contractor, and a nice guy. He and I were trying to come together on the cost of the landscaping. Even though his bid was higher than other bids we had received for the same work, I was looking forward to working with him because of the reviews I had read about his company on Angie's list. When we agreed on the cost and on the specific portion of the job that would be completed, he said he would do the work soon after Thanksgiving. I'm not sure what happened, but I never heard back from him.???????
I spoke with Mr. Watson and it appears there was some miscommunication. However, I don't feel comfortable giving a contractor 50% of the cost of the work when a date has not yet been scheduled. I am planning to meet with this contractor again, and hopefully we can go forward with the project. When the project is completed, I will update the rating for this company.

"Wow, I am actually very surprised to see this report, becuase I was wondering the same thing. The customer was wanting to hold off on the project for awhile and then she called and said they wanted to do a portion in the Fall. I was very happy to hear that and asked them to send a signed copy of the revised proposal with a 50% down check to get the project scheduled and ready to go, like I ask of all of my customers. Well, I never got the contract and the money down in the mail, so I figured they changed there minds and wanted to hold off till Spring. I will call them again and follow up like I had done in the past."

Tom and his crew did a great job rebuilding the retaining wall as it looks beautiful. They took great care in taking apart the blocks as they were able to reuse a majority of them. This was a difficult and time consuming task as the blocks were all glued together. They also took the time to ensure all of the glue was completely removed from the blocks prior to reuse. In addition, the level of detail they took cleaning up after the job was unbelievable.
Before, during and after, Tom was very responsive to voicemails/emails and was professional and friendly throughout the whole process. The bottom line is that I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I would highly recommend Finishing Touch Landscape to anyone in need of a good, honest landscaping contractor. Thanks again Tom.

It all went extremely spectacularly well!
Met with Tom on 4 or 5 occasions & set the job up.Got the bid promptly.Had changes on my part & Tom rolled with them.One of those meetings included the concrete representative.Through out all the meetings Tom was always on time & stayed in touch,making recommendations,explaining the process & keeping my needs in the forefront of the job.This job was complicated by having to dovetail it into the concrete pouring schedule.After delays that were in part mostly my doing I canceled the job with no hard feelings & Tom was an expert at diplomatically getting me back on track! The job is now finished in a professional manner & the end results exceeded my expectations!The crew cleaned up after each work day,protected the work area & left behind no trash.
They groomed the entire work area with hay & seed,groomed the gravel apron with additional gravel & cleaned the driveway.Stacked all old material neatly & went above & beyond what he said he would do with all the details.
Tom is an honest,intelligent,artisan who is passionate about his craft.He is tolerant of difficult customers such as myself.

We got the bid in July, and finally made the decision to do it September 13th. Tom broke the bidding down into 2 pieces as we asked. The retaining wall tear-out and replacement with the gutter rerouting was one bid and the 3 tiered beds were another. We decided to do both.
He called the Friday before they showed up on December 12th and said they would be there on the 12th. They worked everyday from then on, until it was finished. The crew was polite, fairly quiet for a work crew and did not leave a mess each day. They did a very good job and we were pleased. After finishing the construction, they reseeded the lawn and put down straw on the slopes. They also power washed the dirt and mess off of the patio. It looks wonderful and we are excited to get some new plants put in.
The huge, stone steps, which were Tom's idea look very professional. He also suggested rerouting the underground guttering, which we thought was a great idea.
The only complaint we have, is that it took much longer for him to get to us than he had originally told us. I talked to him on September 13th and he said that he should be there in 3 weeks. October came and went. I emailed him and then talked to him in November and he said that there were problems with illness on the crew and other jobs that were before us, wanted more done than they had originally agreed upon. November came and went. When he gave us the bid he had told us he wouldn't cash our down-payment that we sent along with the signed contract until he was ready to come, or we would have been concerned about the delay. However, we had been thinking of doing this for over 10 years, so we obviously weren't in a big hurry. When he did call to let us know when they'd be there, they showed up right on time.
Overall, the job looks great, we are pleased and would use Tom again. He's a very nice guy, also.

"Another very nice couple to know and happy we got selected to work at there home. We got help up a bit on a couple of projects that added more than a week to the schedule on each job. The customer wasn't in a huge hurry, with the added time to previouse projects and crew leaders gatting sick and out of work for a few days, we got a bit behind. The workers were dropped off and Tom arrived and checked in with them. Initially, the 3 guys were hanging out and one of the 3 was working. They got into an argument and I reported them, since they were so slow and then yelling at each other was intolerable. I reported this behavior to Tom who was very responsive. He met with the head worker and things improved immediately. The project did take a couple of days longer than we were told it would, due to the slow pace in the beginning. The finished product was worth the trouble. It is beautiful and exceeded our expectations. My brother was here about a week later and he has a number of related businesses. He was very impressed with the quality of the work! In the end, we got a top notch job and the price was significantly lower than the competing bids. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM.

I got the call from my customer about the guys arguing, this was a huge shock to me because they have never done this in the past, they are usually very happy go kinda of workers who all get along, I spoke with my crew leader and he said that they were not arguing about anything just talking loud and getting the work completed. We purchased a foreclosure and the areas that had grass were bare dirt. Tom came out and not only gave an estimate, but some ideas. He understood that we had a number of other projects on going and just wanted to get the backyard sodded so that it wouldn't be a muddy mess for our dog all winter. We had the estimate done in August to get things scheduled for October. Tom's crew was great. They started on a Friday and had the existing soil removed and all the new mulch in by mid-afternoon. The sod was delivered overnight and they started early the next day. We were gone before they started and came home after they were gone. It was like walking out of the garage into a park. It looked absolutely amazing. We are already planning to have Tom come back in the early spring to do the front yard as he provided a separate estimate for the front when he estimated the back.

Tom is a lot of fun to work with. He knows his business and expects to do a good job. His crew also knows their job and are very hard working. This started out to be a little project to replace a rotting wall, but Tom causally mentioned that he could remove monster yews that were swallowing the house at a reasonable price. I expected to die with these horrible things and I feel liberated to be free of them. This work was done in the extreme heat of last summer so we waited until October to begin planting and have established the bones of a whole new and improved look. There is more to be done and more decisions to be made and a winter to plan. I'm very pleased with what we have done and look forward to a spring adventure.

Unfortunately I had the same experience as most of the others who gave this rating. I contacted Tom because of all fo the great ratings he's received. I had a good first meeting with him on 10/25 and even went and did the research he suggested with Kirkwood Supply that weekend. I then called to follow up on 11/2. Tom did call me right back and told me he had a family emergency, but was working on my bid. I understand family emergencies of course, but it's now about 4 weeks later and still nothing. I just really wish he would have let me know things were too busy for him and he couldn't fit the project in - no big deal - just communicate please. It's not easy getting out of work to meet with contractors and it's really frustrating when it's all for nothing.

Services were supposed to be a spring clean up of my landscaping. Had to call several times. They said they came out and performed the work but it looked like nothing had been done. Tons of leaves still in landscaping and around patios. None of the bushes had been trimmed. Basically paid $165 for them to pick up some twigs. They did come back out upon my request, although they did seem irritated. Not rude, just irritated. Still do not beleive I received $165 worth of clean up much less the full amount the deal was supposed to be worth.

"Wow April 2011, I will try and think back about this project. I had provided a Spring Clean up offer through Angie's List back in Spring 2011. The offer was to clean up leaves and trim up to 8 shrubs, (I think) If I remeber correctly, it has been a while, this home, didn't have very many leaves, nore did the shrubs need to be trimmed, I could tell they had kept up with the yards landscaping. So my crew removed all of the leaves on the property like they had for many yards prior and trimmed the shrubs to look Great and everything looked very nice when we left. I guess my irritated sound, if I was or a unbelief feeling was that the home hadn't been cleaned up like it should have been done. We did go back, there really wasn't much to do, except remove a few more leaves that had blown into the yard area, again, it looked great when the guys left the property."

I called Tom because of the large number of positive referrals listed on Angie's List. His company had more referrals than any other listed. I interpreted that to mean than he would provide quality work and could tell from his responses that he was interested in pleasing his customers. Tom suggested the steps leading up from the lower level to the upper level. From that I could tell that he had creative ideas and was eager to make suggestions. That suggestion convinced me that I wanted to hire his company. I had only asked that the original wall be reworked to prevent further erosion that was occurring in my yard. I also wanted to replace the landscape timbers with more landscape timbers and Tom rejected that idea. His explanation for that reaction made perfect sense. Upon receiving his bid I immediately accepted it. I found his work crew to be hard working, professional and open to communication. Their work was done in a meticulous manner. The experience was a good one and I would recommend this company to anyone. They even did work that was not a part of the original bid. I have had work done by other company's but I could not recommend them to anyone. All I can say is that if you want quality work and a company that will go out of their way to please, then call Finishing Touch Landscape Company!

Tom was quick to reply to my request for an estimate, and was prompt in coming out to survey the area and getting an estimate back to me. In fact, he was far more prompt than I was! I had definitively stated that the work could wait until they had time to fit me in -- and that occurred within about a month. (Much sooner than I had anticipated.) Unfortunately for them, it rained a lot around that time, so they were a bit delayed in getting started (compared to when Tom originally thought he would have time for my work). Once the weather cleared, he and the crew came in so he could give them an overview of the project. That afternoon, they started removing the old wall. By the next afternoon, the work was completed, everything was cleaned up, and they even filled some of the holes in the yard left by my dogs! Grass seed was scattered in any bare areas and the area was left as it had been when they started. Even in the period between when they started removing the wall, but before they had finished, they had the area and the tools all covered while they were away -- the dogs and I were still able to use the area as needed!

Tom Watson provided me a quote in a timely manner. The quote was competitive when compared to others I had received and based on the reviews in Angie's List decided to give him the job.
The work required to be completed in 2 Phases since I had to get my gutters and painting completed before the landscape could be finished. Tom had absolutely no problem with this approach. In Phase 1, the trees and shrubs were cleared. In Phase 2 the Retaining wall was built and planted 2 Pyramidal Boxwood trees. The bare areas were covered with grass SOD.
The quality of the work was very professional and i would have no hesitation in recommending Finishing Touch Landscape
for all your landscaping needs.

I contacted Finishing Touch earlier in the summer but decided to hold off on the work until the fall. Tom came out and inspected my property, was punctual and professional and gave me his honest opinion on what would work best in each area. His bid was slightly higher than another landscaper I contacted, but it was still very competitive and I went with him because he provided a much more detailed plan, showing exactly what plants he'd be putting in. I could tell he was a perfectionist - very detail-oriented.
Tom and his crew completed all the work in just two days and were extremely professional. (i.e. when I came home after the first day, I could tell they had cleaned up thoroughly, even though they were mid-project). The results were better than I could have anticipated - he was able to take my vague requests and turn them into exactly what I hoped for. We contracted with Tom at Finishing Touch early this year to do this complete landscaping job. He advised us all during the summer about whether to do the project and we delayed it until this month because of the extreme weather. His crew of 6 came out and in one day stripped the whole front yard of grass, plants and tons of rocks to prep for new plantings. We had our own design and Tom worked with us to fulfil our vision of what we wanted by way of low maintenance plantings with very little grass ( less water, less mowing) when we wanted to add natural rock edging he sent us to his supplier and we chose what we wanted and the additional charges were very fair and it turned out so well that people have stopped their car to tell me how beautiful it all is. Tom communicates very well and that adds to the good experience. To add his "finishing touch" he even planted more plants that I bought myself! I highly recommend this company for whatever your needs are.

Tom Watson, the owner, was very responsive in coming out to look at, and bid, the job which consisted of hauling away some planter box timbers and clearing some small trees and brush away from the side of the home. He contacted me by email a couple of days prior to doing the work and gave a date that the team might be out to do the work but couldn't say for sure due to a pending job being finished. Therefore, when they did come out later in the day on that date, I was at work and not present during the work to do an initial walk through to ensure we were on the same page as to the work being done. When I arrived the team was already done and had left for the day. Some of the front planter tie wood was not hauled away and some of the roots were not cut completely to ground. When I contacted Tom I found out there was a mis-communication about the wood being hauled away. Tom went ahead and removed the remaining wood at his own cost even though he understood (and bid) the job to NOT include that wood in the removal and would have to pay a second charge to dump it. That is probably why Finishing Touch has such a high rating on Angie's List - he follows up to make sure the job is done right - and, in this case, he did so at his own expense. I would use Finishing Touch again for any landscaping work we have due to the follow up results of the job.

When Tom came to our home to give us a bid on our job, my husband and I were immediately impressed with him. He was enthusiastic and had some really great ideas. After visiting with one of his previous clients and viewing his work we decided he was the person to hire. Tom was really great for me. I can be very difficult to work with because I change my mind often and require lots of communication. He always answered my calls and messages and didn't seem irritated as I changed the plans numerous times. I really appreciated that Tom pushed me to do some things that I wasn't sure about but he knew from experience were important to do. My project turned out beautiful and we couldn't be happier. I highly recommend Tom and his crew!!
