Interior Painting
$100
The first coat of paint was put on extremely thin so it required a second coat.   Even with that there were odd patches on the wall.  The paint purchased was an expensive Benjamin Moore paint which I have used many times and covers extremely well.    Tape was left on the ceiling overnight and when pulled off it pulled of my ceiling paint.  This was patched, but still does not look good.     I am repainting the entire inside of my house slowly room by room.   This is the third contractor I have used and definately the worst experience.   I am having a contractor I have used for several years coming to redo this room.
Response from Rent A Husband
"The odd patches were not noted by the member as exception areas to be addressed when she declared the room ready for painting. I think a previous painting had test areas that may have been done with a satin or semi-gloss material, causing the wall not to absorb paint as it normally would have done. The member did not review the finished work with me, so I did not learn of this problem until her post."

It went great. Installed some cupboard doors, shelf, removed a lockbox, installed shelves in garage, fixed door handle, installed hose hanger and helped me hang a painting.

We were pleased with Stephen's work. He gave us an alternative to repairing the wood until we have the time to replace the wood at a later date. He gave us an estimate of $150. He only charged $92. He also took the time to explain his work and look over the house once he was done. This was appreciated as this is not an area where we have much knowledge.
Response from Rent A Husband
"I always ask the member to inspect the work completed to be accurate on the requested labor. If the work needs explaining, or extra work needs doing now to save the cost of a return trip on the same project, then I want the member to learn this."

I definitely will not hire Stephen again.  If YOU do, "be-on-your toes' (especially projects taking longer than 1 visit to complete)!  The last evening Stephen was at my home, I invited my neighbor to meet him to discuss projects at her home (many, having a large, unfinished home addition), as I respectfully give referrals to those who are trustworthy and do a good job!  Her projects and my own, will now go to someone else.  Someone who is approachable and willing to take responsibility for his mistakes to achieve a satisfactory outcome for all.

In that way, he worked truly in the spirit of the independent contractor - I gave him a job and he set about doing it.  A few times I gave input, but he was generally self-driven.Aside from a few odd mannerism (come on, who doesn't have them?) I would without reservation recommend the service provided.

"Thank you. The bench had more aged wood underneath its planks than could be seen when the initial inspection was made, and required more installation engineering than normal."

He was easily reachable and responsive by phone.  He got  a little tied up on the job before us, but he made sure to let us know that.   He finished the project in an hour when my bofriend came back with the remote for the fan.  There was some problem with it, and Stephen spent another hour trying to sort it out.  He refused to take more than $20 for the additional hour.  He's a classic old-soul hippie.   I loved meeting him and will most definately call again.
Response from Rent A Husband
"This was the most quiet, gracefully designed fan I have put in! I thoroughly enjoyed doing it!"

Unfortunately, Stephen missed our first appointment because the previous job had gone longer than expected. I completely understand that can happen, however, a call would have been nice to let us know that he was running late.   Our appointment was at 2:00 and I finally called him at 3:00 to find out what had happened.    We ended up having to reschedule for the following day and he showed up on time.  Scheduling mishaps are a part of life but communicating when things to awry goes a long way when it comes to customer service.

I had purchases his services via an Angie's List Deal.  He arrived on time and was very respectful around the house.  We ran through the projects I had organized and he got right to work.  He got all of those projects done and even more than I had expected for the three hour commitment, including hanging pictures, blinds and assembling my TV table.  Even better, I had hired him to replace some closet hardware and a ceiling fan.  He was able to repair both, saving me the expense of the replacement items.
Response from Rent A Husband
"Glad to help the member through her "to do"/ "what's next?" list"

Stephen showed up on time and was very professional and knowlegeable.  He reinforced the shelve bracket so that it would bestonger and hold more weight.  I was very impressed that he could fix the bifold door as it had been forced open and the wood cracked, as well as breaking the slide mechanism.  Also put up new towel racks and reinforced them.  I was able to cross three things off my list.  I would have had him work longer, but I had an appointment I had to go to.  I would use him again. Thanks Stephen!

The job went well. Fast and effective.

"The member has the best bi-fold doors I've ever worked on---7' high on strong swing supports and solid wood using 4 hinges. Except the hinge screws were too short for the load, and pulled out. The customer was very helpful in getting the job done, as these heavy doors needed an extra hand to back up the bi-folds while I was putting in the longer screws. I would go there again."

"The member's breadboard tracks had come apart, and if there's anything in a kitchen that can make a house a home, it's a breadboard. Glad to fix it for her, along with other plumbing projects."

He was very careful and thorough.  He worked straight through from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. without even a lunch break.   I would definitely use him again, and have passed his name on to other friends who needed similar work done.

"The member is a do-it-herselfer, who is always enjoyable to work with. She just didn't have some of the tools needed for her project, particularly the pendant light. I would work for her again."

After the initial discovery that the first set of windows would be difficult, things went fine. As time went on, it became clear that these windows would require all the time. I would have appreciated an update during the process that unless I wanted to purchase additional time, the two windows he worked on would be all that he could do. However, maybe he didn't know just how long they would take because they required additional steps. He was professional and knowledgeable. After he was out the door when the job was finished, he put my concrete birdbath back on its pedestal without my asking him. I really appreciated that because it was much too heavy for me to lift.
Response from Rent A Husband
"The sash windows with counterweights required one side of trim to be removed to exit the window from the frame. A metal glide had to be removed. One window's counterweights had attic insulation in the bottom of the weight chamber, preventing the weight from dropping completely. This required vacuuming, something that could not be foreseen on the time budget, as well as adjusting the counterweight rope. Since both windows were covered by the radiator, both had to be cleaned the same way, making a time update too difficult to estimate. As a compensation, I put the birdbath on its pedastal. This is the second job I have done for this customer, and would work for her again."

He gave me a price of $50 over the phone. He did the work right, but it took him a long time. When he got done, he told me the cost was $125. We ended up agreeing on $80. I would not use his services again in the future.
Response from Rent A Husband
"The member gave a general request to replace a shower spout he was having trouble with, and I quoted the job unseen. When I was able to examine the job directly, the spout pipe needed to be replaced, as it was damaged by his efforts. What could have been a half-hour job necessitated a whole house water shut-off, due to the shower cartridge's leaking, draining the system enough, de-soldering, re-soldering, and final testing. This became a three hour job at $33/hour, plus materials and travel charge after 5:00 pm."

Stephen replied to my email promptly.  I emailed two others and they took days to get back to me.  He showed up at the appointed time and got to work right away.  As we had discussed on the phone, he purchased and brought with him the tank mechanism for the toilet and installed it in one bathroom, and then changed the flapper on the other toilet.  Both toilets work well now.  He checked a switch in our fuse box, and we tried to get it to trip again by plugging things in and switching on lights.  He recommended that since we could not get the switch to trip again, that we leave it alone and not replace it.  He said it felt sturdy and not like it needed replacing.  I appreciated that he didn't just replace the switch regardless of whether there was a problem or not.  He was communicative enough about the job, but not a talkative fellow -- just got straight to work.  He billed us only for the hour he worked, the travel fee, and the cost of the toilet mechanism.  If we had gotten a plumber, it would have been much more money.  Thank you, Stephen!!
Response from Rent A Husband
"The member requested a capped charge, indicating her funds were tight, so I kept the work focused on that. I try to save the customer money on every point."
