First, all of the people stating that Window Concepts wouldn't speak to them without both owners/decision makers present are spot-on. I should have questioned why the scheduler repeatedly asked if and quot;anyone else involved in the decision making process would be there.and quot; I thought it was weird that they required both of us to be present for the quote. After all, it's just a quote, right? It's not like I'm signing a legal document.
Well, there was a reason. This is how my experience went, and from what I have discussed with others (I have 2 acquaintances who also received quotes) this is how the sales reps do business.
I was interested in a quote for attic insulation in my 50-year old home. The sales rep arrived completely unprepared to inspect the attic. He didn't have a ladder to look into the attic, and had to borrow mine (which was not tall enough for him) so he couldn't even get a good look at the current insulation level. He peeked around with his flashlight for about 30 seconds, and came down to warn me that my insulation was and quot;very, very inadequate.and quot;
So, after sitting down at the kitchen table, the sales rep proceeds to give me an absurd quote for the job. He also tries to sweeten the pot by saying that they are offering a 30-day-only discount and an additional discount if we signed that day. We weren't interested, so we said and quot;no.and quot; Immediately he asks to go to the bathroom, where he proceeds to make a phone call (my guess is that he was talking to his manager, but who knows, maybe he was ordering a pizza) in an attempt to let us stew for a bit. Maybe he was hoping that we would change our minds. Who knows.
After he comes out, he says that he's sorry he couldn't make a sale, but then he asks, and quot;if I got my manager to agree to do this at cost, what would you say?and quot; We still don't want to make the deal, but by now we can tell that he's not going to leave. So we say, and quot;yesand quot;, and he calls his and quot;managerand quot;. He has a fake phone call with his manager (we can tell the guy on the other end isn't even responding) where we tells his manager that and quot;we are such a good couple, have a nice house, let's make this deal for themand quot; and then he turns to us and gives the final offer, but we have to tell him RIGHT NOW WHILE HIS MANAGER IS ON THE LINE. NO TIME TO THINK ABOUT IT. At this point we were both really frustrated, so we said yes, just to get the guy out of our house.
One day later I walked into their store in St. Paul and cancelled.
I have no interest in doing business with them due to their shady, high-pressure tactics. What kind of business won't let you take your time to think about it? That's crap. Pure crap, plain and simple.
So, let this be your warning, too.
When he did arrive he was pleasant and we went through the motions of designing our shower liner to our specifications. Then it came time for him to calculate the estimate for the purchase and installation. The estimate that was good for 18 months was in the 10K range (which is completely absurd for what we would be getting), but then of course if we decided right now we could get it for around 7K. That price kept dropping if we put out a sign in our yard, or let them put our address in a flyer, and other current deals that were about to expire. When I asked if we could have the weekend to think about it he got a little snippy and rude, and told us that in his experience if he left without having us sign the paperwork, that we would not be calling him back. He asked us what would be different on Monday compared to today. My husband and I don't make 7K decisions in 5 minutes. Overall I was seriously disappointed with our experience and do not plan on doing business with this company, ever.
About a week before the appt., they called us saying they need to reschedule it and push it to 1PM. I told them that my wife wouldn't be there if it got pushed back but that I would still be home. They said they'd prefer if both of us were there but said that it would be fine if it was just me so it got re-scheduled.
So today the salesman arrived about 5 minutes late but that's not a huge concern. However, he didn't bring a ladder because he said he didn't know he was giving us an attic insulation bid until after he left. Not cool. But it got worse. After taking a brief look at the attic (which lasted less than 30 seconds) he said it looks fine and that was it. Told us it looked like about 12 inches which was perfectly acceptable. He didn't bring a tape measure or flashlight or anything. He wasn't exact or professional. He told me it wasn't worth doing and wouldn't even give me an estimate. To top it off, he didn't even put the hatch door back on the proper way and left insulation debris all over my floor which he didn't clean up. That was unacceptable. Complete waste of my time!
To make matters worse, I didn't get my gift card. He knew my windows didn't need to be replaced by the look of them so he didn't give me a bid on that. He told me that since my wife was there that I couldn't get the gift card. They never said anything about that when I set up the appointment. What a horrible way to do business.
In summary - they were late, didn't bring the necessary tools, didn't give me any estimates, made a mess and didn't give me the promised gift card. He couldn't get out of my house fast enough. We will never use them. They are not welcome in our home again. I would highly recommend you DO NOT use this company.
Then I told him of a another companies bid that was just a little less (even with the 50% off). So then he decided to call the and quot;ownerand quot; to see if he would agree to do the job at cost. The boss agreed to take off $500 IF we signed up and gave a deposit right then and there.
I don't like the high pressure tactics and the phoney calls to get better deals and quot;just for usand quot;
He gave an impressive demonstration on a new kind of window that doesn't leave watermarks, keeps the heat out, and reduces glare. He politely went out to the car while my husband and I talked; we decided on the windows and the bathroom.
The windows were installed as soon as they came in. Yes, they are very nice, good quality. But you can hardly see through the screens, especially when the sun is shining on them. We took them out, and instead open up side windows.
Bathroom - W.C. doesn't do floors or toilets, and we wanted both, so had to line up tile flooring at another store, plus get our own toilet. Also, you would think that if WC provided the fixtures for the bathtub (shower valve, shower head, safety bars) they would provide the faucet for the vanity sink. But no, we had to get that on our own, and managed to find the same brand and color.
We had to coordinate with the flooring company regarding installation of the floor. It finally all got done.
But...we soon discovered that the left vanity drawers wouldn't open. The door molding had been removed for the floor installation and painting, and hadn't been put back on when the vanity was installed - it was installed right up against the wall, and due to the design of the vanity (the drawer fronts go almost to the edge of the cabinet), once the molding was back on, the drawer fronts hit the molding.
My husband called WC on a Monday, and was told someone would call him back. No response. He called again on Friday; and again, no response. The following Monday, he went in person to the showroom and talked to the person he had spoken with on the phone. She lined up the installer to come the following Friday. He came, and it turned out to be a 5-minute fix. the granite, thankfully, hadn't been glued on, so it was a matter of loosening the screws in the back of the cabinet and moving the cabinet to the right about an inch.
We would give an 'A' for punctuality, as they always came when they said they would, and on time. But we're giving a 'B' just because of the lack of response to our phone calls about the installation problem. It left a bad taste in our mouths.
Lessons learned: get more than one estimate and go through a contractor.
insert the hose which would carry the insullation to the attic. This was the closet and most logical window to use.
Cleaned up when they were finished, taking the approximate amount of time the projected for the job.
I do wish they would have alerted us to being nearly complete with the job so we could have peaked up in the attic
to see the completed job before they sealed up the attic access. Not that I distrusted them , but it would have given
me even more reinsurance of a completed job.
