On June 6th I purchased a pedestal fan with a remote which was listed for a great price in their weekly ad. I called ahead to find out if they had any and if they could hold one - I was told they couldn't. I said I would stop by after work to pick one up and they suggested I call to confirm they had some left which I did. I drove from a southern Twin Cities suburb to the east side of St. Paul to purchase this item as there wasn't a True Value close to me. I put the fan together that night and it worked as it should. The next night the unit was making a strange noise so I took it apart and put it back together hoping to quiet the unit. Unfortunately, that didn't work and the noise continued. I was willing to live with the noise as I didn't pay a lot for it ($16.99 + tax = $18.29) and the store was a little drive away. However, last night I went to turn on the fan and absolutely nothing happened. No blade movement at all so I packed it up to return. Today I drove back to the east side and as I drove into the parking lot realized I never put the receipt back in my purse. I figured since I purchased it by credit card, it had a True Value sticker on the box and they just had the big promo sale on, that I wouldn't have a problem with an exchange (they didn't have any left) or a return. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. I explained to the gentleman behind the counter hat I had accidentally left the receipt at home but I gave him the date of purchase and said I had the card I purchased it with if that helped. He said he couldn't do anything without the receipt and proceeded to unpack the fan from the box saying maybe it was in the box. I again explained that I had the receipt but had forgotten it at home. He said he couldn't take it because I may have bought it at another True Value store or even Gertens since they carry them also. When I pointed out that it has a True Value sticker on it the said that Gertens purchases the units from True Value. Somehow I can't see Gertens purchasing 3rd party from True Value, but if that were the case why would I drive across town to "scam" that store for $18 bucks when I live 2 miles from Gertens???? The clerk then called over another worker (the owner?) who asked what was wrong with the unit, plugged it in and then told me he couldn't take a return without a receipt. I explained the situation to him and said that the unit has their sticker on the box and that it was just on sale recently and couldn't they please make an exception since I would have to drive back across town to get the receipt. He said no he couldn't and that he has been taken advantage of before and said he is trying to run a business here and it's their policy to have the receipt. I totally understand trying to run a business and that some people try to take advantage, but I am a middle age woman, was polite when explaining my dilemma and was there with my daughter - did they really think I was lying and trying to take advantage? They certain did not need the receipt to recoup the price from the manufacturer (the unit was defective) but rather felt following "policy" was more important than providing good customer service. I drove back to my house, got the receipt, drove back across town and returned the unit. When leaving, the original clerk said "good thing you found that receipt." I told him it was never "lost" but it had a bit of mileage associated with it. I certainly do not blame the store for a defective item, nor will I let this experience deter me from giving my business to the "little guy", but I won't support THIS business as they clearly do not value their customers nor wish to truly assist them if encountering a problem with a purchase.
Description of Work: Purchased a product that turned out to be defective. Attempted an exchange or return but unfortunately forgot the receipt at home. Store worker and owner were unwilling to assist even though the product had the store name and information on it, was recently advertised on sale, and I was able to provide them with the date of purchase and the card it was purchased with.
