Funeral Homes
Overall, I am very pleased with the compassionate and skilled care that the Mueller-Bies team provided in our time of need. I was there when my mother's body was removed from the nursing home and the two men attending her were dressed professionally, respectfully and did not rush me as I said my goodbyes. Jim, our funeral director, oversaw the care of my mother and did a remarkable job. Death is not a beautifier and my mother had been subjected to a lot of physical trauma by the paramedics trying to save her life. The cosmetology and hair styling was included in the price and made her look beautiful and peaceful. We were given time to assemble Mom's clothing and jewelry, and felt no pressure whatsoever, even though time was clearly a factor in preparing the service.
The stationery is also included in the funeral package that we selected and there was a fine selection of prayer cards, mailers, and a choice of two thank you notes.
Jim also coordinated the timing of the service with the church and the cemetery, which proved tricky because Fort Snelling schedules its burials "first come, first served." Because Jim did not waste time in scheduling the service, we were able to get within an hour of our desired time and it all worked out perfectly.
Jim walked us through the obituary, offering tips for economizing while keeping it memorable and classy. There were no typos in the final publication.
We paid the out-of-pocket fees first and this will vary from family to family depending on the services desired. We had a traditional, open casket funeral with police escort to Fort Snelling, and an obituary with photo. Mueller-Bies recommended a local florist that did a wonderful job with the casket spray at a very reasonable price.
Mueller-Bies pricing is very competitive and I would highly recommend calling them before committing to another local funeral provider. Prices are posted on their website so you know exactly where you stand and there are no ugly surprises during a time when the family is vulnerable. They also advised us up front that any time spent between the service and burial (such as a funeral luncheon) would be billed by the hour; thus, it is more economical to wait until after the burial to have the luncheon. I appreciated this courtesy, even though we were unable to have a luncheon after Mass anyway, due to the time constraints imposed by Fort Snelling. It is something to keep in mind if your family is on a budget.
Mueller-Bies also allows clients to provide their own burial casket or urn and this can be a huge money-saving advantage to families that must adhere to a budget. They will also offer discounts for cash and allow ample time to pay for services. I have no reason to doubt that they would do everything in their power to assist a financially needy family or extend payment deadlines to accommodate those in financial distress.
The only fly in the ointment is that the staff member handling calls on the night my mother died gave misinformation twice during the initial conversations. The first conversation was with a local police officer that was trying to help me find a funeral home to collect my mother's body (he was initially given the cremation price, not the price for an open casket service) and then later, I was told that the vault was included in the open casket service package (it isn't). I do not know if this individual is a new staff member, but callers should be able to rely on the information given to them the first time, and should not have to second guess the accuracy of quotes and so on.
Overall, Mueller-Bies earns a "A" and, although I hope I don't need their services any time soon, I would highly recommend them to those who want a well-organized, beautiful, professional funeral service at competitive pricing.
