Emergency Services Offered
Services we offer
Residential and commercial building and remodeling, including kitchens, baths, garages, roofs including: cedar shake & shingle, tile, slate, asphalt and flat roofs, custom copper gutters, custom metal work, gravel, cultured stone & window replacement.
Our experience with Northrup was excellent. They do quality job, work with great vendors that help you with your selection of cabinets, counter top, and finish the project in a decent amount of time. Our kitchen project took 2 months. The kitchen was functional ahead of schedule right before Thanksgiving which was a pleasant surprise. In the process of kitchen remodeling we learned we needed a new roof too. We discovered a small leak behind one of the top cabinets when they were removed, so the roof replacement was scheduled quickly and done professionally. With this said, the best asset to the company and the project is the project manager - Bob Nentl. He made sure the project was rolling according to the schedule. His communication skills are above all expectations - all the concerns we had were addressed right away, all questions were answered without any delay and honestly, all details of each step of the projects were explained.

We call for an estimate and they were going to come out of Wed but they never called or showed up. We called them Thrusday and apologized and told us they would be out on Sat. but once again no phone call, no show. We still haven't heard back from them. BAD BUSINESS!!! If this is the way they operate just to get an estimate I would hate to see what would happened if we actually hired them.

At first that sounded expensive to me, but them when I saw the work involved and the fact that there were 3 guys working on this fora few hours, I felt like I got a deal. Sorry squirrels, but it's time to find a new home. (FYI: no squirrels were trapped inside). The guys were very good at their job and really knew a lot about roofs.
Description of Work: Due to some busy squirrels, it turns out my "plastic" air vents were not much more that an entry for squirrels. Northrup came out for my roof inspection, and then quoted the price to replace all of my vents (I had 7).

I called for a roof estimate and was contacted that day by a project manager Rich who set an appointment later that week, he was very flexible to my schedule. He showed up on time and was very knowledgeable and made me feel very comfortable. I received his bid by Email the next day and it was very competitive. I had a couple follow up questions and called Rich who answered all the questions in great detail. Rich was very helpful and even sent me addresses to houses in my area that had the shingle colors that I was interested in. This really made picking the color much easier. We scheduled the roof to be done 1 week later and they completed the roof in 1 day and the Roofers were very polite and did a great job on the roof and the cleanup. Northrup is a Very good company that was great to work with. We are currently in discussions on a bid for New Siding

Here are the facts: Worked with A. to obtain a quote to stabilize the garage. Obtained quote 1 week later after emailing. Called and then emailed A. back to discuss quote which was thousands of dollars more than others. Not a word for weeks. R. called me from the company, left me a voicemail saying A. was fired, they recognize A's quotes were incorrect, they wanted my business and apologize profusely for any inconvenience. Called R. back left a voicemail, no call back for 2 days. Talked to R. he explained what happened with A. said he needed to come look at the garage to re-quote. R. and president of the company M. came to look at garage a few days later. We just bought the house, which A. knew, and had a strict deadline due to sellers paying cost of repairs within a certain amount by a certain time frame which was disclosed from the start, working with A, R and M. I told R & M I needed a quote to give to the sellers and mortgage company. Never received a new quote, had to use the old quote. M took over project management and said a carpenter had to come look at the garage. M with carpenter come look at the garage. M starts to suggests if we pull a permit with the city then an engineer needs to get involved, per city, due to one of the joists being cut for the garage door. Or no permit is needed they can just do the work. I tell him since mortgage company is involved a permit is needed. (non-fact: I was certain they wanted to get more than the seller allotted amount of money at this time and was not about to have them perform work without a permit for fear of incorrectly performing the work.) I call M to schedule the work, M repeats if he pulls a permit he will need an engineer which will greatly increase the cost of work. I personally go to the city with pictures to discuss this "need" for an engineer with an inspector. The inspector laughs and asks if the company has an engineer on staff they need to pay for. I do not pull the permit, since whoever pulls the permit is responsible for the work. I call M back and tell him I went to the city and no engineer is need and finalized a date to start the work. M tried to provide a "rational" as to why he thought an engineer would be needed (BS). The work was completed by two guys who needed M to come help - not sure how well trained they were for this work. Inspection failed due to needing stronger and additional anchors for the sistering of joists. M had to come out and fix this elementary mistake and re-inspection passed. Non-fact, my experience: DO NOT HIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They will nickle and dime you if they think they can get away with it. Clearly they didn't know my family has worked in construction and I do know a little - the trip to the city saved us. For the 3-4 trips the president of the company spent coming to the house, looking at the garage, and attempting to drive up the set amount from the seller, could not have been worth his time and cost him a lot more in the end. It would have saved us all time, money and headaches if he was fair from the start. I am sure M's response and version will be different - I expect nothing less from Northrup.

Response from Northrup Remodeling, Roofing & Exteriors
Northrup had hired a Project Manager “A”. We found out after a short time that he had drastically misrepresented his skill level and ability to quote projects and therefore was quickly let go. We then had a representative in the office call all of A’s clients to explain what happened and to let them know we wanted to make sure proper due diligence was taken with A’s estimates and that all aspects of the job had been taken into consideration. The owner went out to the project and quoted the project properly. The client accepted the quote and the cost of the job was the exact amount of the quote. At no time did we add additional charges to this quote. The garage we quoted was not structurally sound and based on past experiences it was our opinion that an engineer would be required to make sure the garage was structurally sound at the completion of this project. This client also had a very tight timeline that we were able to accommodate. It is very unfortunate that the client felt he had an unpleasant experience with Northrup as we always strive for a high level of customer service and communication.

Rich was very personable. He made it easy to discuss the scope of the project. He accepted an estimate that we had received from Northrup over a year ago. Our house was re-roofed 2 business days after we submitted our deposit. We met onsite midday and he explained that they found some rotten decking but he didn't charge extra for it. He also said they discovered we had 3 previous layers of shingles, but they would not charge extra for that either. It means a lot to work with someone who isn't going to give you a competitive price and then charge you for a bunch of extras. A couple of of our gutters came unattached from the eaves during the process. When we let Rich know, he did what he could to fix them and then sent over a carpenter to repair them right away. Rich was very attentive to this issue once we let him know about it. It might have been nice at the end of the project work day or next day to get a status. We were unsure whether or not the project was finished. But the questions I had were taken care of the following day by staff following up. We have a bath and a kitchen remodeling project coming up and I'd definitely consider using Northrup again.
This is the 4th project we've done with Northrup and can't say enough good things about the process, communication and the finished product. Quality, communication and professionalism were all top notch.

First impression was great! Rich (salesman) was very friendly and knowledgable. Went downhill fast. VERY poor communication on their end. After sending in signed contract and 1/2 down it took me contacting them each time to find out when the job would begin. Promised several dates and they were no shows. The current promised day (said they would arrive between 10-11am) I called the main number (at 12:15pm) and spoke with the owner. Not exactly sure if he cared or not. Said to me "most people aren't at home waiting for the team to arrive". What difference does that make? If a job is promised to begin on a specific day/time, whether a client is home or not isn't the point. I am certainly understanding about unexpected hold-ups at a previous job, but how about a heads up? He did call me back after speaking with Rich and Rueben (roofer). Said they would be out in a couple hours. I had asked Rich to be there so all 3 of us would be on the same page regarding the work to be done. Rich agreed he would be present. About 2:30pm Rueben and a helper arrived. I went out to greet them and was not warmly received. No hand shake or introduction. I introduced myself and asked his name. I'm assuming the owner spoke with him and in turn he was miffed with me. When asked if Rich would be coming he said, "I don't think so he has a doctor appointment". He then says he is going to start with the stacks and bath ventilation and "probably won't have time for the chimney and above the front door today". I said with rain in the forecast I need the chimney done first as it has leaked in the past. From his reaction he was not aware of this issue. THIS is precisely the reason I requested Rich to be present as I specifically mentioned this. Went in the house and called Rich, left 2 separate voicemails and I have not heard back from him. Left the house for a few hours and when I returned around 7pm the work crew was gone. Along side the house they left a bag of trash, 1 full pack and an opened pack of roofing shingles and some flashing. Not clear to me whether they completed the job or not. No note in my mail box or a voice message. Two days later someone came and picked up the trash bag, the full pack of shingles and the flashing. Don't know if they went back on the roof to finish up or just picked up supplies. Unbelieveably poor customer service! So disappointing. I WOULD NOT recommend.
Description of Work: Install new step flashing and reglett to chimney and above front door where roof meets stucco. Install new bath Broan and 2 metal lead top plumbing stacks.

Our experience with Ron Burgess at Northrup exceeded all of our expectations. *Listened to our wants and created awesome layout options for our tiny south Mpls kitchen *Provided style/layout guidance when we were stumped at how to proceed *Reassured us that it would all be worth it when we were overwhelmed *Kept our house impeccably clean despite the mess created from taking our kitchen down to the studs and starting over from scratch. * Kept the project on schedule and on budget. *Asked us before work began what we wanted to spend (this simple question was key and so many other contractors failed to ask us that up front!) * Attentive and responsive to minor concerns that arose Cannot recommend Ron and Northrup highly enough. Excellent experience. We love our new kitchen and look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

It went very well. We found Northrup via Angie's List and we have used Northrup for another project and that went well. Our project contact, Rich, was knowledgeable, courteous and responsive. The process to schedule our job was relatively easy. The work provided was well done. They had left some project debris in our yard and when we let them know they apologized and quickly returned and removed the debris. We like the work they do and the customer service of Northrup and will definitely consider them again for other projects in the future.

Rich Martin from Northrup caulked our dormer windows and woodwork free of charge! We were expecting a more difficult and expensive solution to our water damaged living room ceiling. We had narrowed down the source of our leak and Rich offered to caulk it to test our theory. Wow! In what world does a contractor just do stuff for free like this?!! He refused any payment whatsoever. We will be sure to aim our future business at Northrup.

Very responsive. Got a quote a day after I initially contacted them. Work was done on time as specified. Clean up was complete. The one concern: the initial quote did not include the need for some wiring (the salesman had assumed that we already had power for the garage door opener, which was not the case), so we needed to add the cost of an electrician. Once the electrician was here, however, I had him add some outlets to the garage, since there was ample time left from his minimum charge, so I got some extra out of that.

Rich Martin was the project manager. He arrived on time -- the same day I requested the service. He was courteous and went up on the roof to try to understand our problem. Ultimately, he determined that he needed to bring back roofing experts and let me know that he would follow up with me in a few days. He returned about 10 days later (unannounced, which wasn't optimal) with his experts and they very quickly identified the problem and repaired it. He also assured me that if the problem wasn't fully repaired, they would return again for further service.I would use this company again.

They did a great job! Rich came out and gave a thorough estimate and advice – which really made us feel like they know their stuff. Once we got an estimate we decided to move forward. It went well. Ron from Northrup gave me good information on the pros & cons of replacing a one car garage with another one car garage versus replacing it with a two car garage. He also made helpful suggestions on ways to correct my garage siding & driveway drainage issues without taking down my existing garage and putting up a new one. I am reconsidering the scope of the project because, thanks to Ron, I now know I can bring my garage into compliance without spending a lot of money.

Response from Northrup Remodeling, Roofing & Exteriors
Upon meeting with the client and after a brief conversation we had conveyed the importance of needing an architectural design to accurately quote the project. Contactors can only interpret what we think the client wants or needs until we have an actual set of plans. Northrup provided a wide range on numbers and there are many variables that can dictate what the true costs will be. It is unfortunate that we were not able to quote this project on an apples to apples basis. Obviously we did not interpret the project the same if other contractors were quoting 2-3 times less than what we bid. We at Northrup are proud of the work that we do and always do our best to be competitive; we wish them well on their project.

Mark Kesling (Project Management) made a very good impression. He was kind and listened to what we wanted for our kitchen. He was respectful - he didn't talk negatively about our home (i.e. you're not really going to keep that tile floor, are you?! as another estimator did), or try to get us to do more than we wanted, and we appreciate that! We are excited to hear his plans and his estimate ... and hopefully, ultimately, to have him do the work!
Description of Work: Came to my house to estimate a kitchen upgrade.
Several factors increased the complexity and scope of the project. With five other units sharing this driveway, space for materials and dumpsters was extremely limited. With adjoining townhouses on either side, limiting the noise associated with construction was a challenge. The owner was deceased so the executer of the estate and the townhouse association shared responsibility for oversight. The association's blanket insurance policy paid for restoration from the water damage and the executor had responsibility for the remodeling undertaken simultaneously. Northrup Remodeling's experience working with insurance claims was of benefit. Their subcontractors were professionals who did excellent work. Ron Burgess, Senior Project Manager, from Northrup Remodeling was a pleasure to work with! He was a hands-on kind of manager, here frequently checking on the quality of the work, keeping us informed of project progress, providing heads up for deliveries and other potential access problems, and limiting hours contractors could work at the more noisy processes. He was readily available and responded quickly to questions and requests. The quality of the work was excellent and the cost was as estimated.
Description of Work: Northrup Remodeling, Inc. repaired water damage to all three floors of a townhouse. The unit was unoccupied. When the plastic connector on an upstairs toilet supply line broke, it flooded the unit damaging oak flooring, carpeting, ceramic tile, kitchen cabinets, ceilings, wallboard and millwork.
It went great! Ron, the project manager was very kind and responsive to our needs. He connected us with Superior Flooring and they were excellent as well and had all the materials we wanted. Every day the crew left the house spotless and every day progress was made. It was fun to watch. It took about two weeks. It looks gorgeous. My favorite part is the trim. Very nice carpentry and very nice little details like perfectly fitted thresholds and corners. Highly recommended. Northrup won't likely be your lowest bid, but they'll likely be your best builder. We'll go back to them for sure!
Description of Work: Northrup remodeled our 300-square-foot basement after we had drain tile and a sump pump put into our basement. The existing flooring had been removed (carpet), so Northrup's work included drywall repair (a perimeter of drywall was removed due to moisture in the basement), installation of DriCore subfloor (a great idea they suggested to us and it only cost $1,800), installation of $5/square foot laminate flooring with a high-quality noise pad, installation of new wood trim installation, minor repair of drywall and tile in our basement shower.

Our house was built in 1936 and the bathroom hadn't had much attention since then. We decided to completely remodel the bathroom, taking it down to the studs and subfloor. We reached out to multiple providers for bids and discussion. Northrup was the builder we felt most comfortable with using and had a competitive price. We worked with Mark, who was excellent at communication and follow-up and was always attentive to our needs. We have a busy house, so certainly appreciated the great communication. The work was top-notch and we are very happy with our new main level bathroom.
