Ron came to our home twice to discuss 2 different projects we were considering. He was professional, prompt and knowledgeable. He gave good information for us to consider to help us decide how to proceed with our project- and clearly knows his stuff. We ultimately decided to start with another company due to pricing. Northrup is a company I am keeping in mind in the event we have needs that aren't met otherwise.
Description of Work: Consult for house addition/ garage rebuild
Very, very well. Our project manager provided an upfront plan that met our goals and budget needs. Throughout the process, Northrup was incredibly responsive and professional, even getting to know our dog and working around him. The work turned out great and we would definitely use them again.
Very well. Ron was the company representative we worked with. He was highly professional and responsive to our requests. The job was finished according to schedule and on budget. We would definitely work with Northrup again.

Christian at Northrup was wonderful to work with. He was very responsive and returned all of our calls immediately. The work crew covered all of our plants around the house and garage so they wouldn't be damaged. The finished roof looks great. Will definitely use Northrup again in the future.

BEAUTIFULLY! I had been looking for remodelers to do my kitchen for 4 years. When I found Northrup I felt like half my journey was done. I worked with Bob Nentl as my contractor throughout the process. This house is over 100 years old so bringing the kitchen up to date proved to be a design challenge. Bob referred me to Richard Groh Architects and I worked with the two of them to get a really nice layout. In the design process, I chose to remove the small back porch and expand the kitchen. Because of the slightly slanting lot, this also developed into a small expansion of the basement underneath the new addition. Communication throughout the process was excellent. Bob and I connected regularly and he kept me apprised of any issues and gave me reminders regularly. The work area was cordoned off so that dust was minimized and living was doable. I say ‘doable’ because construction always disrupts your life. Everyone who worked on his project was professional, friendly and highly skilled. From the cabinets, tile and countertops (the visible pieces) to the plumbing, electrical work, floors, construction, and excavation - - They were all excellent to work with. Even my back steps are beautiful! There were a couple of things that I added along the way, including having the plumber look at and replace the plumbing up to the 2nd floor bathroom, and an egress window in the basement (the City’s requirement). Other than that, the project came in on budget. Our only delay was the April snowstorm that delayed the back steps. I was still cooking in my new kitchen though, and I love it. I would definitely hire them again. Everyone remarks on how beautiful my kitchen is - and it’s so much more functional.
We worked with Ron Burgess from Northrup Remodeling to do an extensive remodeling project in our old St. Paul home. The work included adding a new powder room on the main floor, gutting and rebuilding another bathroom, opening up a wall. Lots of wall-moving, electrical, tiling, plumbing, drywall. This was as painless as a major remodel can be. And we are so happy with the results! Leading up to the project we were impressed with how Ron listened to us and helped us think through plans. In preparation for the project Ron mapped it out and helped us understand what to expect. Ron's project plan was accurate, and the work was finished within the projected time period of 3 months. Each subcontractor brought in by Northrup was equally great to work with and they all did excellent work. They were willing to work with me on all of my design choices and helped me navigate challenges that come with remodeling old houses.
Description of Work: Extensive Remodeling of our 100+ year-old home
In August of 2017, I hired Northrup Remodeling to complete an extensive remodeling project (attached garage, master bathroom, bedroom conversion into a walk-in closet and 2nd floor laundry room, new driveway, backyard brick patio, siding for the entire house, exterior window painting and, repairs on a number of “deferred-maintenance” items within the house). Ron Burgess was the project manager. Northrup Remodeling did an outstanding job. More specifically, Ron Burgess and all of the subcontractors that he assigned to the project were professional, courteous, dedicated and delivered a product that exceeded my expectations in a number of instances. Ron worked tirelessly behind the scenes to coordinate all of the work, was incredibly responsive to all my questions and, provided me with invaluable advice and insight. In a number of instances, Ron’s insight and advice spared me from wasting money on unnecessary work and yielded aesthetic outcomes that were better than I could have imagined. / / / / / / / / / DETAIL / / / / / / In August of 2017, I hired Northrup Remodeling to complete the following: • Tear down a detached two car garage and rebuild an attached two car garage in its place; • Tie the new garage into a pre-existing mudroom (entailed a small expansion of the existing mudroom); • Full demolition and rebuild of the master bathroom; • Conversion of a bedroom into a walk-in closet for the master bedroom and a second floor laundry room; • One window replacement; • Installation of new siding on the entire house; • Exterior painting of all windows, chimneys and brick facade; • Replacement of brick driveway with a concrete driveway; • Removal and reinstallation of brick patio in the back of the house; • Demolition and replacement of front brick walkway; • Repair of deferred-maintenance items (railing and balusters, screen door, foyer tile and grout lines, door handles, interior doors, kitchen sink, cabinet drawers, etc.) Interior construction concluded by January 2018. Following a break for winter, the remaining exterior work was completed by July 2018. Ron Burgess was the Northrup supervisor for the entire project. My experience with Northrup was fantastic and working with Ron was a joy. Ron brought to bear the skills and abilities of subcontractors that provided a high level of quality work and professionalism. At the outset of the project, Ron set out a timetable for the start and expected completion dates for each part of the project. Ron started the project on time and kept everything moving along so that the project finished within expectations. Moreover, any time I had a question, Ron was readily available and promptly addressed any issues to my full satisfaction. Ron also brought to bear the expertise of Kathleen Winter (interior designer) and Richard Groh (architect). Ron, Kathleen and Richard worked extraordinarily well together during the project. In every instance, they were able to suggest great ideas, integrate the goals/desires I had for the finished product and, most important, they dissuaded me from making certain design/material choices that I now realize would have been a huge mistake. Throughout the entire project, I was very impressed with the subcontractors Ron selected for the work. In every one of my interactions with the subcontractors, I found them to be professional, courteous, excited about their work and committed to delivering an outcome that in many instances surpassed my expectations. When each subcontractor started their part of the project, they stayed on the project until it was completed – in a number of instances, working far later in the day than I would have reasonably expected or, working on the weekends.

They got me on the schedule promptly and were able to meet all my need with an amazing price. I got around 11 quotes and I choose them and I am not disapponinted. Would hire them again.
Description of Work: Reshingle roof, take out chimney, new gutters
We worked with Ron Burgess from Northrup as our project manager from start to finish and our project was very well run. We originally solicited bids from multiple contractors and Ron quickly differentiated himself. He was knowledgeable, prompt and accurate with his estimate, and most importantly honest with us about the work we wanted to have done. He helped us to understand the house better and he suggested some smart revisions to our plans that helped us constrain the costs of the project. He kicked off the project when he said he would, kept it on schedule throughout, and he never surprised us with hidden costs. During the project we made several revisions to our plans, and he made the change request process really easy and always gave us fair and transparent pricing. The quality of the work was great, and we're extremely happy with how everything turned out. We'd absolutely hire Northrup again.
Description of Work: Full-house remodel, including entire basement, dining room, and kitchen
We were in serious need to fix our leaking flat roof on our attached garage, as well as replacement of the rails and exterior staircase which were in disrepair and unsafe. Mark and Cristian gave us a quote and were able to get the crew to work, my concern was before the snow and they made it happen! Once spring came the new garage door got installed and new gutter and downspout on the back which looks great. The new cedar stairs and rails are now safe and we can't wait to use our new deck this summer! We would recommend working with Northrup!

It all went more smoothly than I expected. As project manager, Ron Burgess made sure he understood what we wanted. He had the expertise to guide us through the process and suggest changes along the way. Not only did he do a great job supervising the remodel, but he also taught us a lot along the way. Once the scope of the project was decided and the contract signed, Ron gave us a shopping list which included preferred vendors. We went about selecting all of the materials and they were delivered to our site when needed. We were given a schedule for all of the work and it was adhered to most of the time. All of the subcontractors were experienced, pleasant to work with, and respectful of our space. They made every effort to clean things at the end of each day. We would definitely work with Ron Burgess and Northrup again.
Description of Work: Complete gutting and update of kitchen. Our kitchen was outdated and getting shabby. We worked with Ron Burgess from Northrup Remodeling to turn it into a modern, attractive, functional space.

We apologize that you feel Northrup was pricing your project as if we weren't interested, we would never price any project to avoid getting it. There were never any plans provided so we were left to interpret the project as we saw fit. There are many variables that go into determining pricing on a project. Often times once a quote is provided and the pricing is not where the client would like to see it, they will contact us and we will work with them and do our best to work within their budget.

I believe this was bid so high because he didn't want the job.
Description of Work: Contact originally made through Angies List and person was very responsive. Finally someone called and scheduled an appointment. The day before the appointment I received a call and project manager rescheduled for a day later, which was a pain as I moved my work schedule around. He came out and I showed him my unbuilt lower level walkout. I was looking to build out the bedroom (13 x 13) with a closet and storage area in one section. His quote did NOT include running a cable so I could have a wall mounted TV. The bid came in at just short of $22K - ridiculous. I have not been in my home for even a year (new build) and it would have cost me $36K to build out entire basement with a bathroom, bedroom, finished storage area and huge familyroom area - about 1500 sq ft. This bid was so out of line for a bedroom. If he didn't want the job, why bid it? The reason I even entertained this company was because they had reviews for smaller jobs. My goal is to build out this space over a three year period as I can pay cash. I did not build out with builder because I wasn't sure exactly how I wanted the space laid out. So disappointed. Lastly, he came out on Friday and told me I would have the bid the following week. I hadn't heard from him by Thursday so I telephoned him. He acted put out because he was busy. He sent the bid the following Monday. Had I not phoned, I know I wouldn't have had it even on Monday. A lot of wasted time for me when I could have been working with someone who was really interested.
The work went Smoothly. Great workers, a good team.

Northrup brought in an entire crew to assess the situation in our house. They gave us the most professional advice for how to handle the very terrible situation that we were in. Bob from Northrup took many hours out of his days to assist us in what we needed to get through the arbitration process knowing full well that we wouldn't be able to hire him unless we were able to collect. That to me is going above and beyond, and really says a lot about the people behind this company.
Description of Work: We were the victims of a fraudulent real estate transaction. The sellers were aware of water problems in the basement and didn't notify us. We had extensive damage in our basement. We reached out to Northrup to get a quote to help us with the repairs.

We ended up not going with Northrup, despite being our lowest offer, for a number of reasons. First, after I was emailed the pricing proposal, I asked a follow up question via email and never heard back from the person who sent it. My husband had to call and follow up 2 weeks later. Next, we asked for an approximate start date and time for completing the job to be added to the proposal. That was refused because of "weather conditions." I completely understand weather being out of their control, but we were willing to be flexible and have not been refused that request by any other vendor, so that was off-putting. Finally, the biggest reason we are looking elsewhere, and the only reason I'm reviewing a vendor I never worked with, is that we asked to have the free window cleaning deal listed here on Angie's List added to the proposal as well. We were told that this is not a "clean all your windows" deal. Rather, it is a "clean ONE window and meet with the window cleaners in hopes of upselling you on cleaning the rest" deal. Not surprisingly, that scam is not explained on the coupon, though the "up to $200 value" sure does try to convince you that it's good for the whole house. Who charges $200 to clean 1 window?

Our Angie'[Member Information Removed] List coupon has been used by many customers with no complaint. The coupon is worth $200 and will typically cover 4 to 5 windows. Unfortunately this was a miscommunication between the Project Estimator and the client. With the recent storms this summer, we were unable to commit to an actual start date until the contract was signed and an in cue for the work to be done. We are sorry you were disappointed with your experience with Northrup. We always strive for great customer service and we are always interested in feedback from clients. We are continually working to improve our process.

It went very well. When we first bid the project Mark identified quickly that this seemingly simple project was not so simple. Upon his advice we hired an architect to design the structure and necessary retaining wall. With the architect's assistance we were able to create the ideal garage given the limits or our site. The variance requests were submitted to the local authority and approved without any argument. Given local zoning law, to obtain the height needed for the project, the garage had to to match both the siding and the roof line of our 1908 foursquare house. All was built on a platform held in by a gorgeous boulder retaining wall. The final structure matches our house well, and is probably more solid structurally than the house it was built to compliment. I am particularly delighted by Northrup's recognition of our concern about minimizing the impact of both the construction process, and the final structure on the two massive trees in our back yard. Even though a skidsteer bobcat was used to move rock and fill to build the wall, all work was done on the alley side of the wall, and the soils between the tree and the retaining wall were not impacted. Northrup also helped engineer a wall that had a minimal foundation below ground so as not to cut roots of the big trees needlessly. Throughout the process Bob was attentive and responsive to our needs. Northrup built at premium structure for a fair price that we are going to appreciate for years to come.
Description of Work: We had Northrup build a garage on an alley on a restricted innercity lot. Challenges included a grade differential between the accessing alley and the yard, 100+ year old trees to preserve, and the need for multiple zoning variances.

From the first meeting we liked Mark White and his straight-forward advice. He was honest and recommended that we engage an architect and come up with a plan before going further. He recommended an architect but also said we could use another one as long as we got CAD drawings. During our second meeting Mark invited representatives from the "trades" as part of the estimate process. I liked this approach because the "trades" point out things that could be missed when the estimate is developed. Mark put together a fair estimate and even revised it after another onsite meeting when we had questions. In the end we went with another contractor but it was a close call and we appreciate the time and effort Northrup put into their bids. I'd recommend then to my friends, I'm sure they would do a fine job and we'll keep them in mind for our next project.
