MSP Custom Hardwood

Our 28-year-old red oak hardwood floors on the main level of our home needed to be sanded and refinished, especially in the kitchen and doorways leading to decks. The previous owner had dogs, so some areas were scratched through the finish down to the bare wood. We requested an estimate using the MSP Custom Hardwood website and heard back from Jason immediately, setting up an appointment the next day. He carefully measured and inspected the floor, especially areas we felt might need extra attention. He then reviewed the sanding and refinishing process along with the pros and cons of the different finishes they could use. We decided to go with commercial quality waterborne finish with low VOCs rather than an oil-based finish since it would be less prone to yellowing and fading over time and was environmentally less hazardous. Jason patiently answered our questions and gave us additional information we found helpful. He sent us a detailed written estimate the next day. We obtained estimates from several other flooring contractors with varying degrees of responsiveness and pricing. Jason’s professionalism and customer communication far surpassed the other contractors. Some contractors didn’t even want to come out for an estimate – just quoted a cost per square foot with no details about the type of finish or knowledge about the condition of the flooring. One who did come out just wanted to use oil – didn’t seem to be listening to our concerns about sensitivity to VOCs and yellowing, etc. We selected MSP Custom Hardwood to sand and refinish the floors applying finish coats of Bona Traffic HD – a waterborne commercial grade finish with very low VOCs. This finish is a bit more expensive than oil or some other urethane finishes but the durability and scratch resistance made it the right choice for our home. The team arrived promptly at 8 am (every day) and started by carefully screening off our cabinets, appliances, stairwell, vents, fireplace, and countertops with plastic sheeting. They introduced themselves before we left the home and were very friendly, professional, courteous, respectful of our home and patient with our questions about when we could be back in the home, drying times, etc.. After sanding, the crew applied four different Bona sealers with colorants on small strips directly on the floor so we could see how each sealer would look specifically on our floors – this extra step was extremely helpful in assuring we achieved the look we wanted. We selected Bona’s IntenseSeal – a low VOC waterborne product that highlights the natural colors in the wood. The next day they sanded off the test strips and applied the sealer we selected. We were impressed that they’d go to this length to make sure we could evaluate each of the sealer options. The whole process took a bit more time than we thought but we understood that we were given an estimate and were actually pleased that they were taking the time to make sure they put the floors in top condition, had thoroughly cleaned everything before applying the first sealer coat and that they were allowing proper drying times between coats. After the final finish coat dried we noticed a few issues related to the application that needed attention and contacted Jason who immediately scheduled a time to come out and inspect the issues. He assured us that he wanted to make things right, that the issues were straightforward to address and that they’d come back out to make things perfect – or as perfect as possible on a 28-year-old floor. And they did. We found that Jason and his team took genuine pride in their work and adhered to a very high bar for quality workmanship and customer satisfaction. We were very pleased with the results and work that was done by team. The original quote was not the lowest that we received but we were willing to pay for the attention to detail that we received and we thought the price was fair for the service. The floors look beautiful and are what we were hoping for. The crew was prompt, professional and responsive to all of our question and requests which was great. We are thrilled with how the floors turned out. We had original 110 year old oak hardwoods throughout a portion of our main floor and wanted to have them installed throughout the entire floor. MSP had to remove ceramic tile in the kitchen and carpet in the family room. They feathered in the new wood with the original and stained everything to match. It looks amazing! Jason and crew were very professional and responsive and the job took about 2.5 weeks to complete, which was very close to his initial estimate. Everything went according to plan. We couldn’t be happier!

It was awesome! I received a text I believe the same day asking what we needed and then we set up an appointment where he could come by and take a look. Within a day or two, he provided an estimate. He was very willing to work with us because we were having a remodel done on the whole lower level so others were ahead of him based on the project and he was very easy to work with and very professional. Would definitely hire him again. I believe my daughter now is thinking of having her place done and she/we already plan to call on him again!

He then worked with us to overcome some challenges with the type of flooring materials that were needed to complete the project. His crew was on time, friendly, and knowledgeable. Roughly 75% of my hardwood floors were damaged when my washing machine overflowed. I interviewed 4 hardwood installers and selected MSP Custom Hardwood. Their owner, Ricky, was very responsive and patient with my many questions and their bid was competitive. The floors were just completed and I could not be happier. They are beautiful ! Start to finish, the job took 2 weeks, which is exactly what they anticipated when providing me their bid. Each day, the team was punctual and very hard working. Bruce, Jeff and Stefan were my key guys, with Jason providing general manager oversight. The guys' work was A+ and the color match between where the new floors went in and where the non-damaged floors just needed resanding and sealing is perfect. I cannot tell where the old floors stop and the new floors begin. I have already recommended MSP Custom Hardwood to one of my neighbors in my building. Great job guys and thank you!!

We are extremely pleased with the quality of the floor and were impressed by the professionalism and respectfulness of the crew. Given the narrow width of the planks and the large area to be covered, the process took about 3 weeks from demolition to final sealing and wrapping up custom wood details, replacing doors, etc. The crew took extra care installing transitions from the new wood flooring to existing wood flooring, including custom transitions between rooms and at the fireplace. The crew were knowledgeable and helpful when decisions needed to be made and respectful of our home and comfort, as one of us worked from home throughout the installation. After each work day, they cleaned up after themselves and swept up all the debris. They were patient with all of our questions. The estimate was very close to the actual cost, which only changed because we chose to add baseboards after the initial estimate. We were very pleased with MSP's professionalism, honesty, and work ethic and would hire them again.

MSP Custom Hardwood was an excellent team to work with. Their team had years of experience (up to 30), arrived on time, worked hard, were very friendly and left us with beautifully refinished and stained floors. They were even able to hide the mistakes of a previous owner who had (poorly) attempted to do this themselves and the stain they helped us pick hid the one water stain that we found during refinish. Pricing was fair and worth every penny. We love our new floors, thanks!!
