Called a few companies to get suggestions & estimates for replacing my old, deteriorating fence in Spring 2008. All strongly suggested all-wood fences, except Landmark. I got some addresses of places where the companies had done prior installations. After reviewing the types/styles, I decided on the CA. chain link. I tried to get the other companies to provide an estimate for that style, but they were either too high or would not do that style. In early Sept 2008, I chose Landmark & provided a 1/4 down payment to Landmark and was told that they would start in 2 wks. I was pleasantly surprised when they called the next wk (after down-payment) and said they could start (mid-Sept 2008). One crew came out and reviewed & confirmed the fence line in the AM prior to my leaving for work. Then, they removed the old fence, hauled it away and installed the fence posts. About 6 days later, the next crew came while I was at work and finished the installation of the black chain link, gates (built on site), gate hardware and trimmed and topped the fence posts (tops were an added-cost option). Landmark's office staff did a good job of calling me and letting me know when things were happening and what to expect and I felt there were no surprises.

We dropped in at the company in Mendota and discussed our desires. They then sent an estimator to look at this relatively small job and sent us an estimate promptly. We agreed to the price and and their desire to do the work when they had a lull in their schedule since this was a small job. It did take a while for the job to actually be completed (can't recall if we called them to prod) but they did a nice job while we were away on a trip, cleaned up well and the end product was exactly what we had envisioned.

They were actually very good. We had a little misunderstanding on the price of the second gate, but they worked with us on that. The salesmen did a good job explaining everything to us except the second gate, but that was resolved. The quality of the fence is very good as well.

Everything went very well. Professional and experienced staff. Estimator was great, really seems to know his business and enjoy his work. The installers were very good. Had fencing put up on both sides of the backyard (yard is on a large pond). No previous fencing. Only thing-and it is very minor-is there was a delay in the company getting the fencing materials from their supplier, so then the install had to be scheduled after my vacation. But it got done and looks very attractive and sure is sturdy.

They had someone to our house within days to give an estimate, which was similar to other outfits. The others, however wanted to cut corners. i.e. attach the gate to our stucco house, cut the posts of the chainlink fence to the ground instead of pulling the concrete bases out. They others also couldn't give us exact dates as to when the work would be done. We have small children and live on a busy street. We didn't want weeks to go by from when the chainlink came out and the new fence was put in. They had it done in 3 days from the date we set. The wood has no knots and looks great. We get compliments from people we don't know who are walking down the street. They cleaned up and followed up to see how we liked it. We've recommended Landmark to friends. Within weeks of the initial estimate, we had a framed batten board 2-rail fence.
Description of Work: Landmark pulled out and disposed of old chainlink fence and put in lovely 6-foot high, 124 foot long, red cedar privacy fence and gate.

They came one day to lay the posts and 2 days later very early in the morning around 6am, startling my wife, but were done by 10am. We stained it ourselves to match the previous fence. When our other fence or deck deteriorate further, I will definitely call Landmark.
Description of Work: We had several companies bid on a small project to complete fencing in our backyard of a house we just moved into, since we have a dog and small child. One contractor was annoyed since the job was <$2000 and their company didn't do small jobs and they should have told me over the phone. Another contractor gave me a fair bid for $800. The contractor from Landmark suggested I add another 15 feet of fence, serving to enclose the backyard in closer to the front and dramatically increasing the area fenced in. I had not even considered this, but it was a great idea and even though the length of fencing was almost triple, the estimate was only a few hundred more.

The estimate was given promptly and professionally, and after that it all went downhill. I had to call 3 times to nudge them to come out and start the work. Then they incorrectly removed too much existing fence. The new fence was installed correctly and was very nice. But then we agreed that they would just take down the remainder of the old fence, and they would cover the cost because they had been in error when they removed the wrong segment of fencing. I then had to wait almost 2 months until they finally came out and finished the job. I had to make repeated phone calls to Mary and the office asking when the work would be completed, and my phone calls were either unreturned or I was told the workers would be out but they never came. I would not use them again or recommend them to others. I wish I had not paid in full until the last of work had been competed-maybe that way they would have been more responsive.

They were pretty good. I don't have any complaints. They did what they said they would, and the fence looks great and is high quality. The salesmen and workers were great, but the people in the office were not as on top of things as the others were. There were some billing problems, but they got it worked out.

Requested estimate on line. Carl contacted me within a day. We set an appointment. He arrived on time, was very friendly. He answered all my questions and gave me additional information. Their estimated was $1000.00 higher than the contractor I went with. I gave them an opportunity to revise their estimate which they would not without viewing competitive estimate to compare services. I did not allow this as I was very comfortable with the competitive estimate and their abilities. Both contractors were told what I wanted. I am very happy with my new fence.

We enjoyed the great service that was given, even when we had issues, like boards that had gaps. We did a batten board style, but some of the boards were warped, and they needed to be replaced. This did happen a few times, and they even escalated our call because of our importance to them. It was great to know that they cared to keep coming back and fixing these boards.
Description of Work: We requested bids early on from a few companies. Landmark was the only company that took the time to sit down with us and show us their quality and how they have local people building fences. Then, the day the builders came we were consulted again, post placement and line of the fence. It was very helpful. They asked about details that we didn't think of, like the direction the gate should swing. They built it in a matter of days. It was great to see our new fence up. It really added to the curb appeal of our house.

Landmark was prompt in coming out to give us an estimate and were able to set a date for construction within about a month, which was great given that it's their busy season. Work began just a few days after it was originally scheduled and went exactly as they told us it would, with posts set one day and the fence built a couple of days later. The two-man crew was friendly, fast, great about asking questions and explaining things, and very skillful--our fence has a scalloped top so every picket had to be custom cut to the right length. The finished fence is beautiful, and our neighbors really like it, too. We would definitely work with Landmark again.

I was very impressed with their salesman and their bid seemed fair compared to the other estimates I received so I went with them. That's when the problems began. First they said they would be out to install the week of July 14 and since I was to be out of town for 10 days starting the end of that week I was relying on it. They never showed up or called as to why there was a delay. I was told by a neighbor they showed up one day during my absence to put in the posts and came back 7 days later to install the fence (no inclement weather happened during this time). When I returned home they made a hideous error in installing one section of the fence where they sloped it upward so that the end of the section was 6 inches higher than the next section of fencing (the original fence was level all the way across, like any fence anyone's ever seen). I've never seen such poor craftsmanship. I contacted them and the woman on the phone said they would "take care of it." The next day another woman called and was very defensive about what the problem was. I sent her an e-mail with a picture of the problem section and have heard nothing back from them since. I am still waiting, it's been almost a week, to hear from someone about what they will do. In the meantime I looked at the remainder of the fence closely and they also installed a severely warped board in one section, I've asked for that to be replaced also. I hired Landmark to do a very simple, straight forward replacement of a fence, they tore it down, they could see how it previously looked, and yet they somehow managed to install a most hideous display of fencing. I understand that mistakes happen, but the lack of customer service and follow up, as well as communication and timeliness is unforgivable. I would not recommend them to anyone else.

The initial meeting with Carl Pearson went fine and we were pleased to hear that Landmark could start the project in 1-2 weeks. We had solicited a number of bids and felt the price was fair and were happy with the availability. However, 6 weeks later we were still waiting for some type of communication as to when they would be starting. I had contacted the office several times to reconfirm what we had discussed and the frustration we were having. Finally, the crew arrived on June 5 - I went out to make sure they knew what my expectations were regarding the base of the fence. My main concern was that the fence be at least 2 inches off of the ground. I had contacted the office about this and also wanted to make sure the crew was aware of it. You can imagine my frustration when the fence was completed to see the boards on the ground level. The fence looks nice however we were extremely frustrated that the crew washed out their equipment on our lawn leaving gravel & sand, there was a cracked board that should have been replaced at the time of installation and the gate return was not installed. I have placed two calls to the office about these issues over the past six plus weeks and have yet to hear from anyone.

Jim Haas, the sales rep, was excellent. I met with him on 4/10/08 at my home. He was punctual and informative, and gave me my estimate on the spot. He was also very responsive over the next week when we had additional phone and e-mail contacts to make some changes to the fence style. I paid my 25% deposit on approximately 4/17/08. I was told they were scheduling out 2-3 weeks. The fence was ultimately not installed until the week of 6/2/08 -- 7 weeks later!! The office staff did not inspire a whole lot of confidence. They verbally told me incorrect payment amounts, "forgetting" that the installers had already received my 2nd check. They sent me two final invoices with 2 different amounts - I was not given my "Angie's List" discount even though I reminded them multiple times. The installers were punctual and efficient. They were nice guys who did a good job. The fence was installed on two extremely overcast days, where they had to work quickly to beat the thunderstorms. Perhaps due to this, they were slightly careless with their clean-up - for days I was picking up big chunks of concrete (from old fence posts which were removed) and wood. Although my fence is quite nice in the end, I cannot give Landmark more then a "C" as an overall grade. The long delay in starting the project and the flaky office staff are pretty major problems. Maybe they have more business than they can handle, having been highly rated on "Angie's List" for a while. It seems they are really letting things slide & I hope they will take notice and make some improvements. I cannot recommend Landmark Fence.

Sales person (Jim Haas) was 10 minutes late to our first meeting. Otherwise, first meeting went well. He was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Landmark was the lowest priced estimate, had good ratings on Angie s List, and offered a coupon all reasons we decided to choose them. 25% down payment was required to schedule the job. When I wrote the check (4/21), I was told my job would be completed within 2-3 weeks. A receipt of payment came on 4/25, along with a letter that explained my job would be scheduled in the middle or end of next week time frame, not an exact day because they are so weather dependent. On 5/9 (18 days after my payment) I called the office to find out why I had not heard from them yet. I was told my job would be towards the end of the week, in another 2 weeks. At this time I explained to the lady in the office how important it was that the job be scheduled before Friday 5/23 because I would be leaving town. She assured me that I would not be scheduled for that week. On 5/20 (29 days after my payment) I called the office again, after not hearing from them. I was told that my job was scheduled for the following week the week I specifically told them was not possible. After speaking with the owner, the job was scheduled the day AFTER I returned from vacation. He told me that he would personally come to the job site to make sure the plans drawn up on the contract were exactly what I wanted. He also assured me that all my materials had already come in, so that nothing could put my job off any further. Post were set 6/3. There was to be a meeting to discuss the blueprints on the contract prior to any digging, scheduled between 8:00 and 8:30. The crew showed up at 8:41. The owner did NOT come as he promised. However, the crew that did come was very friendly. Everything else that day went well. The remainder of the fence was to be completed 2 days later (6/5). After no crew showed up by Noon, my wife called the office. She was told that the supplies for my fence were not scheduled to arrive until the next day (even though the owner told me they had all arrived 16 days earlier), and that the crew would finish our job the following Monday (6/9). I made a second call to the office to try to speak with a manager. Only the receptionist was there. I asked for a return phone call. I did not get one. At 5pm that day I called back. Mary assured me that unless it rained, my project would be completed the next day (6/6). 6/6/08-Crew showed up at 3:10. Installed fence along one property line. Left about 5pm It had not rained, and my fence was still not complete coincidently, one of the workers told me that there was no way to finish the project that day, as they were still waiting on a gate to come in. 6/9/08-Crew came some time after 1pm, but had the job completed by 4pm. Overall fence is average. Not wonderful workmanship, but nothing to complain too much about.
Description of Work: Installed 147 feet of 60 inch tall, vinyl coated, 2 inch diamond chain link fence. Down two sides of my property line, bumping up to a fence already in existence on my back property line, and bumping up to the house. Also installed 2 gates, one in the side yard in the grass, one in between my garage and house. The second gate involved chiseling out concrete from my driveway.

Jim Haas came to our home to give us an estimate on a privacy fence project. The final result was that Jim left without giving us an estimate and even went so far as to say that his boss would never approve the project. According to Jim, there were several strikes against us: First, the area where we wanted the fence was sloped. Apparently it costs more to work on a slope and Landmark Fence wouldn't 't have been able to use their preferred digging equipment. A second strike was the style of fence we wanted. Instead of a fence that followed the terrain, we wanted the fence stepped down the slope so that each fence panel would remain level (we were okay with the fact that the step method would leave more space under the fence). That was going to require more costly 12' posts rather than the usual 10' posts, another strike. Finally, Jim was concerned that the step method would result in our fence exceeding the 6'6" height limit imposed by the City of Saint Paul. Jim seemed surprised that another company had given us an estimate and not expressed the same concerns he had. Jim was polite and seemed to know his stuff, but I was uncomfortable when he asked me what specific companies had already come out and given us estimates. To me, that didn't seem like anyone's business. I also didn't get the sense that he and Landmark Fence really wanted our business. Another company (report forthcoming) was much more willing to work with us to solve our problems and give us the fence we want. If you have a flat yard, then Landmark Fence may be a good choice for you.

Response from Landmark Fence
THIS ISSUE NEEDS SOME CLARIFICATION REGARDING WANTING TO INSTALL THIS PROJECT AND BEING ABLE TO INSTALL THIS PROJECT LEGALLY. JIM WAS NOT ABLE TO GIVE A PROPOSAL ON THE SPECIFIC INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS BY THIS CUSTOMER BECAUSE IT IS NOT CODE TO MAKE THE FENCE LEVEL ON THE SLOPING AREA. REGARDLESS, IF THE HOMEOWNER PAID EXTRA FOR LONGER POSTS, OR FOR EXTRA LABOR, IF YOU MEASURE 6' AT ONE POST AND BUILD IT OUT LEVEL, IT WAS A MATTER OF JUST A FEW FEET BEFORE IT EXCEEDED THE 6' 6" HEIGHT. 6' 6" IS THE MAXIMUM HEIGHT ALLOWED IN ST. PAUL. JIM ASKED WHICH COMPANY WAS WILLING TO INSTALL THE FENCE BECAUSE THEY MUST NOT HAVE INTENDED TO GET A PERMIT OR WERE NOT LICENSED. HE TRIED TO PROPOSE A STYLE THAT WOULD CONFORM TO THE TERRAIN AND GET APPROVAL FOR THE PERMIT, BUT THE HOMEOWNER WAS NOT INTERESTED IN THE STYLES THAT WERE ALLOWABLE BY CODE.

Overall a very positive experience with Landmark Fence. Worked with Jim Haas through the quoting and design process. Jim was outstanding. He came out on multiple visits, took the time to explain options and ideas and to answer all questions. No sales gimmicks just good, straight answers and solid info. Jim was a big part of our decision to go with Landmark. Can t say enough good things about his professionalism. We were very pleased with the fence construction. The end product was beautiful. Everything was done per plan, including several tricky areas where they had to custom fit uneven corners. The posting crew found they had to cut through buried concrete. They called me first to inform me and gave me an estimate of the additional cost prior to cutting. Found two damaged posts after posting. The crew replaced one post and repaired the other without dispute. They were not the cheapest option, but would still highly recommend Landmark Fence. Great job!

Carl came and gave me a rough estimate and said to call when the retaining wall was completed. Then he would give an exact measurement and cost. I was impressed with the quality of the products he installed. After the wall was installed I called and when no one answered I left a message saying we were interested in having them install the fence. In a few days when I didn't hear back, I called again. The woman who answered the phone said she got the message and Carl would call back but he never did. I'm a bit disappointed since I wanted to hire them and it looks like others have had great service from them in the past. Hopefully I can find someone locally who installs a similar quality of fence.
Description of Work: Received bid to install wrought iron fence & two gates in back yard along a retaining wall by an alley. Need fence for safety reasons - so kids don't accidentally fall from backyard over the wall 4-5 feet into the alley or driveway.

Response from Landmark Fence
THIS IS AN UNFORTUNATE MISSED COMMUNICATION ON OUR PART. THIS PROJECT IS SLATED TO BE INSTALLED BY LANDMARK AS SOON AS OUR BEAUTIFUL MINNESOTA WEATHER PERMITS. WE'RE STILL CHECKING WHERE THIS BALL WAS DROPPED AND VERY SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.
