They arrived on-time and completely cleaned the driveway. They removed the weeds in the cracks, then they used filler in the cracks. They then applied the sealcoat and they were so very careful not to get any on my white garage door, and siding. There was not even a drop or drip anywhere. They put up some markings so nobody would drive on the surface. The bottom line is, they were clean, efficient, and quick. It looks great.

He was very helpful and informative, and took plenty of time measuring and postulating solutions. He was punctual, polite, and well-informed. It turns out the best solution at present was not well suited to what they do, but when we decide to reconfigure the entire driveway, I will definitely call them to do the work. They really seemed like pros, and I will have every confidence on calling them when we are ready for a complete re-do.

Took a while to schedule, but the work was excellent! The guys who did the driveway checked with me about any areas to fill holes, then did a meticulous job applying the sealant. Driveway looks great, and much better than the prior time I had this done. Only suggestion for them is to update customers on expected time of day for work when the scheduled day arrives. They came late in the day (the guys have a really long work day!), but I wasn't sure if they were coming as it was getting so late. I called the company and confirmed they were still coming, which was fine, but being proactive in calling or even letting me know that morning that I'd be toward the end of the day would have been better.

Day 1 went fine other than not really knowing when they were arriving. Day 2 - the subcontractors were late. The person pouring concrete was on-time, the finishers were not. The concrete mixer was delayed close to 45 minutes waiting on the finishers. Once the finishers left, we noticed the "caution" tape was attached to our garden flag and one of our shrubs. They chose to pull the stake from its location and use it as a marking point. Albeit, this is minor but a heads-up would have been nice. Ask permission from the homeowner first. Better yet, come prepared with your own staking material.

I had a second masonry company out several days after Aurora finished, for a non-related issue. I asked them, as a professional in the industry, what they thought of Aurora's work. He told me that the surface finish was top-notch, and seemed like a really professional job. He did say that Aurora probably should have added an expansion joint where the poured concrete abuts existing brickwork to allow for any shifting over time, but that it probably wouldn't cause any issues. This is the only reason for the B grade on Quality instead of A's across the board. Otherwise, a really well done job. Several days later, the seal-coat crew came out and did the asphalt work. It's only been a few days, but the work seems very much up to par with seal-coating I've had done through other firms in the past. Friendly crews. All materials were cleaned and the area was marked off to prevent us driving into the area. Both crews arrived when the scheduler said they would, and finished in a timely fashion.
Description of Work: Provider sawcut existing asphalt driveway that was sinking due to water penetration, and removed all material in order to pour a new 4' concrete apron across 3-stall garage. Once the concrete work was done, they seal-coated the remainder of the driveway.

The 2-man crew arrived on time and were very friendly. We walked around the driveway as I showed them key areas where there were issues. The timing was fortuitous as we were leaving on vacation for the weekend. When we returned from vacation, I was thoroughly impressed with the 'details' of how they didn't splash the coating on the house or messed up the grass along the driveway. The quality of the job definitely had a WOW factor! I have had my driveway seal-coated numerous times, but never this good. It cost a bit more than another provider, but it was worth every cent. I will definitely use them again. The only item I 'dinged' them on was that I didn't know when they were coming and I called to find out. I believe you need to call the customer and inform them of when you will be seal-coating your driveway.

Be sure to look at the other bad reviews, because my experience with Ron is just like theirs. Long story short, poor quality job by Ron's guys and Ron refuses to acknowledge the problem, thus won't fix it. You'll see this is a pattern with him, despite all the favorable reviews. Ron's guys didn't clean the driveway properly. All they had were brooms and a blower. I could see tire tracks and dirt on the driveway just before they started sealing and I told them so. They said "it's fine", I said "it doesn't look fine", they said "don't worry, if we don't do a good job, we have to deal with Ron." So I took their word based 100% on Ron's Angie's List rep, and now I'm burned. The truth is, if Ron'd guys don't do a good job, YOU have to deal with Ron. Within a week or two of sealing, the driveway started to look faded, with numerous very noticeable washed out areas?just what you'd expect after applying sealer on top of a poorly prepped surface. I called Ron and he sent the same two guys back. We all looked at driveway. They admitted it looked bad, but wanted to believe what we were seeing was dirt ON TOP of the sealer, while I saw the sealer rubbed off exposing the old surface. But we scrubbed a couple spots with water and blew it dry. Looked the same to me and they didn't disagree. More head scratching by them. How about power washing it, they asked. One kid said heck, he'd come and power wash it himself. No, I'll do it, I said, and I did?today. After power washing the whole driveway, it looks like an old driveway that's just been power washed?same thing as before. So Ron comes over. He acts exactly like the contractor every homeowner dreads: impersonal, uncaring, defensive and obstinate. Where I see gray underneath missing sealer, Ron sees dirt on top of his job well done. "But Ron, I JUST power washed it. It's clean." So back and forth we go. Finally I said "Ron, does this driveway look good to you, like it was just sealed?" He said "No, because you just power washed it." [Slap forehead] So Ron's story is the driveway is still dirty, and he's sticking to it. But guy's like Ron eventually get caught in their own bullish*t. I said "OK, your guy said he'd power wash it himself. Go ahead." He says "that's between you and him." How 'bout that? Just because Ron's employee says he'll do something, well that doesn't involve Ron, as Ron sees it. That's when I understood who I was dealing with. Why all the "A" ratings? No idea. Maybe Ron gets it right 99 times out of 100. Or maybe Ron's outfit isn't really the same people doing the work anymore. Whatever the reason, all those "A" rating don't do me any good, and they won't help you either if you have a problem with Ron. Look, mistakes happen. But what separates good contractors from guys like Ron is, among other things, good contractors don't take things personally, so they don't mind fixing mistakes. Also, good contractors, and good people, care about making people happy. I have the very strong impression that Ron doesn't care. I've been very happy with Jet Black in the past and will be again. One more thing?I'm done buying these Angie"s List "big deals". Too many bad experiences.

I hired Aurora Asphalt and Concrete to pour a new, approximately 1300 square foot, driveway and sidewalk for me. In the contact, it stated the concrete would be doweled and re barred into the garage floor, at a minimum depth of 4 inches. I had confirmed with the department of transportation, licensed civil engineer, my local city engineers as well as others in the trade that the depth of the concrete should be a minimum of 4-6 inches. Throughout process, I noticed that he only used a 3 ½? forms (2x4) to complete the work, which clearly will not meet what I requested and violates our contract-It clearly states that he would be pouring the concrete at a depth of 4 inches not based on 4? dimensional lumber of 3 ½?. I have measured both sides of the driveway the deepest points are 31/2? the shallowest are 3?. He claims that he digs down in to the base, but the forms were constructed after the front end loader left and no one moved any of the base? He stated that they pull up on forms slightly to make 4? if that were the case the concrete would have spilled out the sides and the edges are sharp corners? The logic he is using is very flawed why would you spend additional time to make 4? when you could have just used the correct size form? I?m guessing it is cheaper to buy lumber then it would be to scrape base, which you need to insure a good solid foundation and re-compact and re-grade, the original driveway that was in place for 22 years? Just doesn?t make a sense?? In the contract it said that he would re-purpose (not sure exactly what that means) the base, which come to find out he did nothing, both my wife and I observed. There are now cracks propagating and expanding in the driveway because the concrete settled, this was due to the base was not being prepared correctly. I confirmed this with an Insurance adjuster, a licensed civil engineer, The City Planner and another contractor in Minneapolis. 4 experts disagree with Ron. The garage floor was damaged as well. This was due to incorrectly interfacing the driveway into the garage floor. According to the Department of Transportation to properly dowel requires 12-18? of hole depth and an larger diameter hole to allow for some movement of the dowels because it will move. Aurora drilled the holes and pounded the rebar into the floor at a depth of approximately 6? which would not be oversized per standard or meet the depth requirement. Consequently the driveway heaved due to frost and damaged the apron and caused additional damage further into the garage floor. It took 4 months for Ron to come out look at it. His explanation was,?? we had the worst winter ever, and your driveway held up?? well not really according to the civil engineer, the cracks will get worse over time because of the inadequate base preparation and lack of thickness in the slab; in addition to the garage apron and garage floor. This has pushed me to question the preparation of the job in its entirety, furthermore based on expert findings all have a theme- he cut corners and issues arose. I have tried to discuss all of the issues, but no resolutions have been found. He did say they he would come out and fix the apron by saw cutting in a short depth and re-pour part of the damaged floor. This would still leave the issues of the driveway and any further issues yet to be uncovered. He is completely avoiding the problem, which is that he did not pour the correct depth of concrete on the driveway, and that he damaged the concrete flooring in the garage by not preparing the job correctly or abiding by the 4? minimum in the contract as requested. He said, ??no one uses 4? forms?? which is not true, I have contacted other contractors that state they use 4? ruff cut forms if requested and some have even said we will not use anything less the a 2x6 form (5 ½?) because of your very situation. He also was lacking the proper licensing with the State, which could have been a minor oversight but based on the corners cut and lack of a preparation makes me question the overall quality of his work. Lack of Detail! The crew that showed up to perform work was subcontracted by Aurora, Ron Claims that they work for him but that is not what the foreman said. He stated that He runs my own concrete business and Ron give them a lot of work, so it?s hard to turn him down. I am of the opinion that because he sub contracted it out that he lost control of what quality he tries to uphold and consequently issues arose. Aurora may do great asphalt work as shown by his reviews by other members; however, that was not my experience with this concrete work. I am curious too how many other people have a contracted Aurora and their contract states 4? and have received 3 ½??

Response from Aurora Asphalt & Concrete
The driveway we poured was 51’ x 20’ and the sidewalk was 23’ x 4’ for a total of 1112 sq ft. As you stated, we use 2x4’s to frame our concrete. This is a standard practice in the industry. You are correct that a 2x4 is only 3 ½” but that does not mean we pour 3 ½”. We have grade set to allow for the 4” of concrete. To pour 4” of concrete, we would need 13.73 yards of concrete for your project. I have pulled the ticket orders from the concrete company to prove how much concrete was delivered to your project. We ordered 14.5 yards. We then came up short and had to pay for another truck to deliver 1 more yard for a total of 15.5 yards delivered. Keep in mind that we did not use all of the 1 yard that was delivered but we surely used the first 14.5 yards, an extra .77 yards more than a 4” pour requires and some of the 1 yard extra that was delivered. We did install rebar into the garage floor. Doweling 12-18” might be what is needed for the Department of Transportation when they are constructing roads, bridges, etc but for a driveway, that is not needed. Those projects that the DOT have specifications for would also have larger rebar, thicker concrete and other specs not needed in a driveway application. Because of the existing condition of your existing garage floor and cracks that were already in the floor, over the winter, there was some chipping of the garage floor on the very edge. I have acknowledged that and have said I would cut and replace the front of the garage floor for you. I also said since there is a minimum amount of concrete that has to be delivered, I would cut into the garage floor 4’ and replace more for you rather than just repairing the edge. As for our response time over the winter, I do apologize. We are a seasonal business and the office is shut down for this time. Because of this, we will be changing the voicemail message this upcoming off season and will also be checking weekly for messages so there is some communication available during the winter months.
