In mid-November it started idling high again (1700 rpm) and the check engine light was back on. When I brought it in they turned off the vehicle and they couldn?t duplicate the issue. The computer diagnostic didn?t show that the check engine light had been on. When I left the idle was at about 1300 rpm.
On December 5th I dropped off the car again. The idle now was at 1800 rpm and the check engine light was back on. They called me a few times and weren?t sure at first what the issue was. Then I was told that I needed to replace the IAC and if they damaged the throttle while removing the screws (steel in aluminum) then that would have to be replaced too. Then they had trouble locating the part and they made me pay the overnight shipping. However the next day they needed a gasket as well and I had to pay for another overnight shipment. I also asked them to perform an alignment and stated that I wanted the before and after specs. The car was not ready until late on Friday afternoon, December 7th and there were no specs included. When I asked, they were able to find the after specs but said they didn?t have the before specs. The total this time was $929.83 after a $100
discount (I had asked for a free alignment). The car was idling at 1900 rpm when I picked it up. It was cold outside and the engine was cold so I thought it would warm up ? NO. It only went down to 1800 rpm.
So on Monday, December 10th I dropped it off again. I speak to Mitch Green, General Manager, about all of the problems and he says he will have the service manager call me. Mike Newton, Service Manager, calls me a few times with different guesses and finally asks to keep it overnight. On Tuesday no one calls me so at 4pm I speak with the service department. Mike is out sick so they tell me they are still looking into it. On Wednesday, Dave Runde calls and says it is the throttle body and it needs to be replaced. They will give me a $400 credit towards the $1800. The new throttle body comes with a new IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. He will order it for overnight shipping. I ask for an additional $400 credit and he says he will have to speak to Mike (who is still out sick). I call Mitch and tell him about the issue and that I feel I deserve an additional $400 credit. He says he will have to speak to Mike on Thursday. On Thursday, December 13th Mike says that he will only give me the $400 credit and will have to throw away the IAC
they are removing as they cannot resell it. Then says that the new throttle body may not solve the problem and they will not guaranty that it will fix my issue. He says the paperwork I signed indicates that (see below). But they will do extensive testing before they give it back this time. He said that he knew it was the throttle body after the IAC was installed. So I asked him if they knew why did they have me pick up my car last week. Then he said sorry, I didn't mean last week. They knew this week. So they install the part and charge me an additional $1451.23. If they had diagnosed the issue properly it would have cost me a total of $1800. Because of their errors my total cost was $2651.68 which means I was charged over $850 more.
My car seems to be working fine now and the resting idle is 900 rpm. Both Mike and Mitch told me that they would not guaranty that this would solve the issue. Mike and Dave both stated that they have not had serious issues with Vibes so they didn?t have the experience. But I shouldn?t have had to pay the extra money so they could learn how to fix a Vibe. They also commented that my car
was so old and had too many miles (about 171,000). But I have always taken great care of my car. The only good thing about the dealership is that the shuttle driver was great. But I lost the use of my car for about 8 days total.
