In summary, I'm delighted with every bit of work Mark and his crew performed. They were perfect - uber skilled, reliable, prompt, polite, helpful, tidy and fun.
My kitchen is now a show-stopper. In reality, I live in a 1960's brick ranch but I feel like I live in a palace. I have Mark Ellis and his crew to thank and he will, absolutely, have my business for as long as he's available.
This was the first time I have worked with a contractor so it was a learning experience for me. I really enjoyed working with Mark and I think he did a great job. Not having gone through a job like this before I didn't ask enough questions, so at first I was a little surprised I needed to pay for things like the dumpster, buckets and latex gloves for mixing grout, or trash bags for cleaning up. I misinterpreted Mark's initial quote and thought I was only paying for some of the materials like tiles. Mark was good about communicating and encouraged me to email him often with requests and to feel free to ask questions. He was always open to questions and was very professional, next time I will definitely ask more questions from the beginning and probably give a daily email update of things that need to be done, to help both parties ensure nothing slips through the cracks.
We initially wanted to just have the drywall in the basement bathroom finished and the master bathroom completely remodeled. We ended up having Mark also do the drywall in the rest of the basement, tearing out the old wood paneling. The new quote also included repainting my dining room and removing an old wallpaper border, installing shelving units in my garage, and finishing trim work in my kitchen. When the plumbing work for the master bathroom took longer than originally expected, I told Mark to cut projects as needed and gave him a priority list of which projects were most important to me. I was not willing to spend more money to get everything done, I was already spending more than anticipated. The basement drywall underneath the wood paneling also had imperfections and Mark requested he tear it all off instead of spending the extra time to patch and repair it. In the end, Mark didn?t do the dining room, garage, or kitchen work to balance his budget.
The work in the basement turned out fantastic. I'm still impressed every time I look closely at their trim work and the paint. The drywall came out great and it really transformed the room. When we went over what I wanted in each room I mentioned adding a closet to the corner. Unfortunately they had finished the drywall and painting before I reminded Mark that we needed a closet. He had no issue adding the closet after the fact and didn't blame me for not mentioning it sooner. They went the extra mile to make the place really pop. They replaced ugly old light fixture with a new one, and patched the popcorn ceiling to blend it in. When the carpet install was scheduled Mark had his guys come out to move furniture around in my basement so I wouldn't be charged by the carpet company. They also removed and reinstalled some of my pre-existing trim that wouldn't fit with the new carpet, free of charge.
They had to do a lot of work to make the shower in my master bathroom bigger. They were able to add somewhere near 10" of space by moving a wall and a vent stack, and it really helped with the feel of the shower. The tiles I chose gave them some issues with holding grout and proved difficult to remove the haze, but they worked hard to get it looking good. They came back and fixed some issues I had with their grout work. They had forgotten to hang the toilet paper holder and I asked them to align the doors on the new cabinet they hung. Mark never argued with any of my requests, he just got it done.
They also repaired a leak in my roof. Their first attempt wasn?t enough, but Mark noticed this on his own before they left. I wouldn?t have noticed the leak for awhile, so it was great that Mark noticed it and fixed it without me having to have them come back out.
Overall I am very pleased with Mark?s work. I would definitely have him do more work if I ever move to a new home that needs finishing.
Mark had some difficulty with his supplier and rather than wait 4 or 5 days for delivery of the proper deck material he picked up the materials on his own so there would be no delay in completing the deck. That's above and beyond the call of duty.
The outside work was the bulk of the work, my house is a two story with a walkout basement, so the work that needed to be done, in many places was very high. I have a back deck off the main story, with a stairway going to the basement level. They had to paint all the wood, and replace the caps. Looks great.
The inside work was a running list, that they knocked out for me. They clean up after themselves too.
When I called Mark on the weekend, about my sink collapsing, he called me right back, came over the next day to assess and came back the day after to fix. (We could still use the sink, we had it propped up. I appreciate that kind of turnaround and service, without charging me an arm and a leg on the weekend.
Mark and his team did a lot of work for me last year, when I purchased the home and it needed some renovations and painting. One of the things that I really like about Mark is he shares his opinion, about options on how to handle something and if he thinks something is a poor idea. They will continue to be my go to team for my home.
The work did take longer than originally estimated, and I think that's primarily where we went over budget. The final price didn't differ substantially from other quotes I did get, and the quality of the work was very good.
Mark was a pleasure to work with and is a just a friendly, enjoyable person to communicate with. We'll do a better job getting an idea of the overall cost of the project before we begin next time, and Mark will be at the top of our list to do the work.
"Holly, I am deeply sorry. You are absolutely correct.. I was so busy and your email basically fell through the cracks. Customer satisfaction is at the top of my list so please accept my sincerest apologies as this was clearly a failed effort on my part."
John, Mark's worker, worked really hard and everything came out looking great. While he was waiting for the drywall to dry, he even helped me rip up floors and gave me a lot of good advice in general. Throughout the process, Mark checked and in and made sure everything was going smoothly.
I could not have asked for a better experience...Mark is definitely on top of it and a gets stuff done. I would 100% recommend him to anyone else. Thanks Mark.
For the work, I was quoted roughly 25 man hours and $300 in materials. At the end of the job, we were at 52 man hours and $500 in materials. The only thing that I can think of that was added after they started the work is that they would have to provide some KILZ for the bathroom walls that I thought I had on hand.
Still, the final price was better than some other estimates that I had gotten. And, the work was done quickly, and upon initial inspection, well done.
I will be using Mark's services again, but will try to get a firmer price up front in the future.
We needed to get a rental property on the market ASAP. I asked Mark when was the earliest he could come. Not only did he juggle his schedule so that he could come the VERY NEXT DAY, his team showed up 30 minutes early eager and ready to work. His team was flexible and knowledgeable. They installed a toilet, sink, light fixture, and closet doors, repaired drywall, painted, caulked, etc. I had an opportunity to work along this team all day as we hustled to finish a long list of overdue projects. They also came back quickly to fix an error they made (at no charge, of course). Thanks guys!
