Gas Log Service
In the end, I have a lovely gas fireplace in my walk-out basement that looks great. Just what I wanted.
The process to get what I wanted was a complete DISASTER. I will never use this business or recommend it to anyone - EVER.
I started this process in the early Fall of 2012. I went into the store to discuss what I wanted, ask questions etc and was given some literature to help guide my decision. A week or so later, I had a person from the store come to my house to review my options for fireplace location & venting. I was told that a corner option could be done but that it would be 'challenging' to vent. After exploring other options I decided that a corner unit was what I wanted. I asked to have a person back to the house to tell me EXACTLY what would be required and what it would cost. After several weeks waiting, phone calls to their installer, the fireplace company etc I still could not get a good answer. I was told I had to pick a fireplace unit first, then they could tell me what the overall estimate would be. I never understood this.
I then had to pick a mantel. I was provided with a brochure and several stained wood samples the size of drink coasters to help my decision making. They did not have a floor sample of the mantel type I was favoring. Wanting more info before I shelled out a couple grand, I took it upon myself to visit the mantel manufacturer to see an actual mantel sample & discuss the color stain matching I was after. I arranged the mantel sale through Emmett's and was given an estimated completion date (ECD). Emmett's did NO follow-up with the company and they ended up being more than 3 weeks past their ECD.
I also had to pick the tile for the surround. Emmett's have very little in the way of selection or samples. I ended up having to go to a local tile company to get what I wanted then delivered the material to Emmett's to do the work. To do the venting I had to move some plumbing. They could not do that and suggested I get someone else to do that work. Several discussions took place before they could tell me EXACTLY what clearances they needed before I could have this work done.
It is now early 2013, and an install appointment was made (finally). It was changed at the last minute due to some issues with the installer to the next week. The next week he came and spent the whole day re-wiring the fireplace for an option I wanted. This work could have been done at the shop weeks before! Due to prior commitments he could not return to finish the work for several days. So I had a mess in my house. I was told the remaining work could be done in 1 day with 2 people. Some days later only 1 installer showed up. He spent the whole day putting together the mantel. He could not return the next day so I had more mess in my house. I contacted the store and expressed my displeasure and was told 1 more day was needed and they would make everything right. That day, I had 2-3 people in my house through the whole day and early evening. At day's end, the fireplace worked, the work area was a little messy and the carpet still needed to be snugged up properly to the front of the fireplace. They were supposed to arrange someone for that but did not so I contracted that out myself.
A week or so later the fireplace stopped working. I had the installer back 2-3 times before finding out that the first 'fix' was not done right. After that the fireplace has worked properly.
In all, I expected this company to handle the work from start to finish in a timely manner. They were disorganized, they lacked any sort of proper follow-up with their suppliers & me and seemed to care less how long my house was disrupted during the install saga. I am writing this review 6+ months after the event I am still aggravated!
