Very professional, knowledgeable and very polite.
We are pleased with the roof - it looks good. We were especially pleased with the communication. Every step of the way we were kept informed and the information was adhered to.
Initially I sought out estimates from several roofing companies for how to improve the ventilation in our attic. One would not talk with me unless my husband was present - so sorry, but they were out of the running! Another gave me an estimate without ever going in the attic or up on the roof. Sherrif-Goslin was one of two companies that did a thorough job during the estimating process. Justin Reynolds at Sherrif-Goslin always returned my calls/emails promptly, answered all my questions, and thoroughly examined our roof & attic. But the most impressive thing was that he spent time explaining why we did _not_ need to put on an entire new roof at this time. We were ready to do so and had asked for a whole-roof estimate, but Justin explained that our roof was still in pretty good condition and that adding box vents would be a more economical way to go. He talked us out of spending thousands of dollars with him down to $380 dollars...simply because that was the honest thing to do.
He also let us know that we would need to check the air intake at the soffit vents for the box vents to work properly. I was not comfortable pulling down vinyl siding myself, so he arranged for his workers to pull down some of it -- free of charge! -- when they came to install the vents. And they put it back up nicely too!
The work team was very respectful and hard-working. The foreman was very conscientious about checking with me about where exactly I wanted the vinyl pulled down, where we wanted the vents installed, etc. Not only did they do everything that they had promised to do, but they went one step further and identified a problem with my kitchen exhaust fan. The foreman noticed that we had a kitchen exhaust fan when he was talking with me in the house, but when they were in the attic installing the bathroom vents, they didn't see any sign of it. No ductwork, no exit vent, nothing. He sent one of his workers to 'look' for the kitchen exhaust fan under the insulation and they discovered that it had been completely buried UNDER the insulation by the previous house owners. They would have been willing to install a vent for it too (right on the fly!) but the fan was ancient and its exhaust did not fit any of the ductwork they had with them. So they at least uncovered the fan so that it wouldn't be blowing hot, greasy air into the insulation!
Overall, we were very impressed with our entire experience with Sherrif-Goslin. We look forward to working with them again down the road when we finally do need a new roof!
"Thanks for the kind words! You made my WEEK! I remember first meeting this homeowner at the home expo in March of 2014, because she had a roofing ventilation quiz for me...and thankfully I passed! It's always nice to talk to homeowners who are interested in their homes and home improvement projects. We consider ourselves to be huge nerds when it comes to roofing. SBS polymer modified asphalts is one of my favorite subjects! Did I mention we're roofing nerds? Like, E=MC^2 pocket-protector-and-bowtie-wearing roofing nerds. #SCIENCE One of the most dreaded (and unfortunately, underused!) phrases us roofing contractors use is "You don't need to buy a new roof right now." Of course we'd love it if you use us for your roofing project, but that doesn't mean we'll try and sell you something you don't need. In this case, the roof was lacking proper ventilation, and the roof was in good enough condition that we could install a few extra vents without creating any problems with the shingles. You don't get to be 109 years old (and counting!) as a roofing contractor without honesty and integrity. That, combined with our unique products and outstanding service warranties, make us the best choice for roofing in the Kalamazoo area. Thanks again for the positive review. If anybody would like a free inspection of their roof, please call our office 269-342-0153 or visit our website [hyperlink removed] to schedule something! Justin Reynolds Manager, Kalamazoo"
Concerns: Cuts on w-troughs as in razor cuts or other device. Does not affect performance, does affect ascetics. Chimney flashing was questionable, was redone. Tear in flashing on facia due to tear off, not addressed to satisfaction. 3 Nails found sideways under new shingles with one actually cutting through the top shingle. These were not replaced or tarred at rip. More may have been there, but I only laddered around the house and did not get up on the roof. Asked for an itemized bill, none was provided.
Pros: Shingles look great and nice job making them look so. Very good communication post application. Good clean up.
"Welp... Everything this homeowner says is completely fair. He was very nice to work with, even though the project didn’t go perfectly. We tried to complete the job in one day (Saturday) due to potential weather moving in Sunday-Monday-Tuesday, and there were some obvious oversights caused by our attempt at expedience. In other words, we rushed, and messed up a couple things! I was disappointed with how we finished up on that Saturday, as was the homeowner. I went back to do an inspection when the job was done and he homeowner had taken some pictures of items that they were unhappy with, and we went over them together. They were cosmetic in nature; the caulking on the chimney counter-flashing was sloppy, there were surface scratches on the steel valleys from where the roofers trimmed the shingles back, and two of the valleys were hemmed at the bottom differently – one was straight-cut, and one was trimmed in a “V” shape. We had had two different roofers doing the different sections, and they didn’t talk to each other about how they were trimming them. Jeez! There were three spots where the nails went in to the boards at an angle, didn’t go all the way down, and then were stepped on. Approximately 11,000 nails came off the old roof, and about 13,000 nails went back in (5 nails per shingle, 25-ish shingles per bundle, 3 bundles per square, about 28 square of shingle, plus ridge cap and starter strips, not to mention felt nails, etc.). Roofing trivia! I offered to completely replace the chimney counter flashing to make it look better and to trim back the bottom of one of the valleys. We replaced the counter-flashing to the customer’s satisfaction, and decided to leave the valleys alone, since the only time you can see the scuffs is when you’re standing on the roof. He didn’t mention another mistake we made - we forgot to add 2 extra can vents to the roof, which we installed when we came back and replaced the chimney flashing. Again, overlooked. I called, texted, emailed, and visited to try and stay in communication as best I could while we were touching these things up. No calls went un-returned, and all emails were immediately replied to. All adjustments were made before the job was figured and turned in for billing. As far as the itemized invoice request goes, it was my understanding that the homeowner had discussed acquiring one from the lady in the billing office in Battle Creek – I don’t handle the money stuff, just the roofing stuff. I’m looking in to it currently. Like I said before, this review, although not glowing, is completely fair and I won’t argue with any of it. We overlooked a couple of things, but I tried to make sure the customer was happy by the time the invoice hit the mail. Sometimes things don’t go perfectly, but I do the best I can to make sure we complete the job to the letter on the contract. I’m disappointed that he said he wouldn't use us again, but the good news for him is, now that he has our StormMaster Shake roof, he won’t have to worry about using anyone for anything regarding the roof."
"Yay! Thank you so much for the kind words. I sincerely appreciate the repeat business. Roofing Trivia: Repeat business for roofing companies doesn't happen too often, do you know why? Because most roofing companies are out of business after only five years! (State of Michigan: LARA data) THANK YOU!!!"
"Thank you for the kind words. It's extremely gratifying to hear someone tell us we've done a good job. Roofing certainly isn't rocket science, but it sure is hard work to get it right the first time. Please visit www.Sherriff-Goslin.com to see more about our company, our shingles, and our core values."
