Above Roofing started with a dedicated man who had a big idea. In 1995 Robert Freeman was a single parent trying to make ends meet while raising his young children. He had a passion to help others and used his knowledge and skills to start his own company doing home repair services. There were always homes needing roof work, and it quickly became his most popular service. It didn t take long for him to realize that many homeowners were being taken advantage of by other roofing contractors. Some were pressured by dishonest salesmen selling the homeowners things they didn t need or promising one thing but delivering another. Other homeowners hired guys who were nice but incompetent contractors, overlooking important aspects of the job just to keep the price down to win the bid. This often ended up causing costly leaks, mold and warranty issues. Another concern was with the people who were actually doing the work. While the sales person looked professional and seemed trustworthy, the guys that showed up to work on the roof looked like pirate crews with foul language and demeanors to match. These were guys he wouldn t want on his home or around his children! With each case Robert came across, he discovered a common denominator: a homeowner who was not given the information they needed to choose the right contractor. His heart went out to them. He knew he wanted to be a roofer that was different than the rest of the pack. He strived to go above the image of a normal roofing company - hence the name Above Roofing - by providing homeowners an honest, quality service at the right price, and it worked! Robert used a picture of his black lab to help represent the company because she was loyal, friendly and trustworthy- exactly what he wanted Above Roofing to be. It didn t take long for word to spread about this new company. Customer referrals became a huge part of growing the business, and it hasn t stopped since! According to Robert, Homeowners don t have to settle for poor workmanship or high pressure sales techniques. We believe homeowners can be confident in making an informed decision when hiring a contractor if they are equipped with the right information. Our job is to give them that information. Above Roofing has grown from a struggling young father with an entrepreneurial spirit to an award winning, thriving business supported by a great team of office personnel, estimators and roofing technicians who all share the same core beliefs on which the company was built.

When I scheduled the appointment for the estimate they e-mailed me a confirmation with a picture of the gentleman doing the estimate. I appreciated that. Tommy arrived promptly, was very professional and congenial. Seemed very knowledgable about their products and sky-lights in general. The two gentlemen who did the actual work also arrived promptly. They were also very professional. They took great care to protect interior surfaces as they worked. Finished job blended well with our interior, looked great from outside. They did an excellent job of cleaning up. Overall, we were very satisfied and would use them again.

They did a great job. They are Christian-oriented and they don't curse. They were on time and they are reliable. They don't smoke and stink up your house. The guy's wife is in the office and she is really nice too. The work has really turned out nice. They are really above and beyond what you expect. The price went up a little bit because there was a lot of water damage on one side of the house. They just made sure that everything was right. They were real pleasant to work with. They are good people.

I obviously decided I trusted the company. The man who came to do the work, rang the bell and introduced himself. He also contacted me when he was completed.

Robert came to the house to estimate the work. I had another issue with ice damming on the roof (bigger job), so I am pretty sure he wanted me to have both done at the same time, therefore I think he quoted the smaller job a little higher to urge me to do all of it at once. I do understand, that is how business works. Overall, Robert was extremely nice and caring. He spent a lot of time giving me advise (that I asked for) and guiding me. He explained their company, and their practices very well. I am convinced that they are a very trustworthy company. My only complain is that the price was rather high for what needed to be done. Their worker spent about 20 minutes up on the roof. It was a strait forward fix. Too short of a time elapse to know for sure if it was completed correctly, but I do trust that it was. Having said all that. Future work will definitely be quoted by Above Roofing, but I have to leave the door open to competitive quotes due to the price.

The company sent someone out to give us an estimate within two days of our initial all. The company representative surveyed our roof, explained what the problem was and what the possible fixes were. We agreed to the less extensive plan for repair. The work was scheduled immediately, workers showed up on time, cleaned up their work and did an excellent job.

The initial consult meeting was very good, They were the only company to come with a copy of their insurance and license, as well as the options for shingles and information on the materials that would be used. The estimate was completed prior to the consultant leaving. The 'consultant' Jim, was also one of the roofers, so I wasn't talking with salesperson. He answered any questions we had. He also went out of his way to provide additional information being requested by our insurance company. (The insurance company made a few requests more than once and kept requesting additional details) Each request was complied with without question or complaint.
There was a wait of approx 6-8 weeks the repairs to be made once the contract was signed. We were able to put down a very minimal deposit, as a consession to the wait, and we were informed in advance of the approximate wait time, as their schedule was full.
The only issue we did have was that the measurements were not taken for the replacement skylight in enough time to consider custom ordering after we found out that the size and style of the broken one was no longer available. With the broken skylight as a part of a bank of 3, we ended up replacing a second intact skylight. Custom ordering would have required another 4-6 weeks (minimum) delay.
Once the repairs started, the crew were there when they said they would be, and they did an excellent job of keeping the area clean of debris.
We were also informed the the gutter and fascia work was generally outsourced. I don't know who actually did the gutter repair, but it was installed on schedule. It was done differently than the previous set up, but when we requested information on why, we were shown the reasons why.
After the work was completed, we also requested some additional framing work on the interior of the skylights to make the remaining original skylights appearence match closer to the new ones. The work was completed without any question and was very satisfactory (Thanks Tom!)
Overall we had a very good experience with Above Roofing. I would definitely recommend them to others.

I don't know what they could have done better. They showed up early, did a great job on the repairs, and cleaned up their mess. They were prompt, courteous, and professional.

I spent about $350 for their services. I really liked that they called me back promptly. Someone came out for an estimate the day that I called. I talked to Robert who is the owner of the company. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. I felt like they really wanted to help me. I would definitely use their services in the future too.

They showed up promptly. They did not try to sell me an expensive roof repair which other roofers had decided I needed. They also agreed that the roof did not have to be replaced. They said it just needed certain strategic repairs that could keep it going for a while longer. I got them from Angie's List. I think they are a good organization. There are many roofers in the Grand Rapids area that it's hard to understand who is the best by just looking at the ads. I would definitely use them again.

They did a great job of coming up with a solution. Their rates are very affordable and they were fair about the price adjustment with all the additional time they spent fixing problems they were not anticipating. I was very happy with them.

Their price wasn't expensive and bad. They were great. The guy who came out did exactly what he said he was going to do. He came and did it. He did a great job on it. I did have my roof replaced within the last couple of weeks and that was due to hail damage. I went through a particular roofing company that was in the area doing many people's roofs. I was familiar with his work, and seen what he has done. I was planning to use Above Roofing to get that job done, but since I didn't have to pay for, and my insurance company handled it, so I ended up using another company. Above Roofing’s pricing was fair, and it was right where I expected. I called and spoke to someone in the store. The owner was not available then; but he called me back right at that time. He went out of his way to make sure I was satisfied with the service. I will recommend them.

They were fantastic. We spent probably over $20,000 on that service. They were very professional and it was a very professional group and they just did a great job. They were timely and they got started late because there was so much rain, but that wasn’t their fault. They weren’t the cheapest, but they did the best job. They took off a cedar shake roof that was incredibly dirty and full of nails and I am a gardener and I noticed that they got all the nails and everything out of the yard. It was incredible.

They were good. I didn’t have any complaints. He was on time when he came out for the estimate. He was a part-owner of the company. He was quick and did a good job from what I can tell. He said when he got up there he discovered some other stuff that was wrong, and he fixed it. I will need another roof in 5 years or so, and I would probably call them again. I didn’t have any problems with the person who gave me the estimate.

They were extremely professional. No driveway or street full of cars during the job. They arrived everyday in a company vehicle - small point, but shows the attitude of the company. They were very respectful of our home, landscaping and the neighborhood. In my opinion, they used superior products (under-layment), sealing nails, etc., than other companies I had quote the job (for the same price). They did a great job that was completed in a short time period. Clean-up was also great - didn't even know they had been there (except for the new roof) when they were gone.

They did a great job. They were very pleasant. They were very reliable. They seemed to be very knowledgeable. They did great work. What impressed me most was their integrity or honesty. That was number one. Number two was their actual professional knowledge of the nature of the work that needed to be done. I thought they were transparent honest business people that did good old fashioned work. The job we had to have done was not anything complicated. It was good basic roofing work and they did a fantastic job and they did it for a very reasonable price. They answered all our questions on the spot when they came out to do the estimate. We didn't have any questions that we had to follow up on. They were very transparent and knowledgeable when they were doing the work as well.

Jay came out and gave us an estimate on what it would cost to repair our roof after a storm tore off some shingles. He showed up on time, was very polite, well spoken and did a thorough examination of our roof. He took pictures while on the roof so he could show us exactly what needed to be fixed. He explained what he found and gave us a very reasonable price estimate for the repairs. We hired Above Roofing to complete the repairs as written on the estimate and they gave us a 2 week time frame for when the repairs would be complete. They finished the work ahead of schedule, charged us exactly what we had agreed on, and the roof has been great ever since. I would definitely recommend them and hire them again in the future!

They initially came out in June and gave me an estimate. About three weeks later they came to do the repair and I'm still kind of waiting for the resolution because something wasn't quite right but I feel like it will be fine. They did a couple of other kind of things which hadn't needed to be done otherwise or repair wise. They said it was going to be two weeks between when they came out to give the estimate and when they would do the job but it actually took three and a half weeks or more than that. They said that they would give me a call to schedule it but I never got a call in advance but somebody just showed up. I really thought that I didn't need to be in the house or they needed anything from me. It took longer than they said it was going to be. It was just repair and it wasn't urgent but I could imagine that could have been troublesome with somebody else but I was fine with that. There is still a leak and I'm still waiting for them to resolve that but I don't think it's major. Technically it's not finished yet. They were very good but they cost more than their competitors. They had such a good review on Angie's List that I went with them.
