After my cat caught a bat in my house I decided to get him a rabies shot
since he was past due on one. I had gone to Bay Pines before and
though they were always extremely expensive in comparison to the other
vets in the area, they had done a good job with my pets. I called ahead
and asked how much the vaccine would cost. They told me $32. I
explained that my cat was very aggressive and that I did not want an
exam done due to this fact and his contact with the bat. I simply
wanted the vaccine and nothing more. They assured me it would only cost
$32. When I arrived, I reiterated that I only wanted the vaccine, and
they again assured me it would only cost $32. When I got in the room
and the vet finally came in, I was given a lecture on the dangers of not
having my cat vaccinated for rabies and told horror stories of cats
being mandatorily put to sleep only because of their contact with risky
animals. I was a vet tech for years and then until now a professional
pet groomer and already knew all of this information. He preceded to go
back out and get me printed information, which again I did not want or
need. He then quickly gave my cat the vaccine, while I held him, and
left the room. To be clear, my cat was never examined nor touched by
any professional there. When I went to pay they told me I owed $64 for a
$32 exam and a $32 vaccine! When I explained that this was outrageous
because I not only had been told I would only be charged $32, but that
the vet had not "examined" my cat in the least, so why was I being
charged as such? After asking the vet, the receptionist told me it was
due to the time he had spent talking me. Though I argued that this was
ridiculous, because I had never asked for the information nor wanted it,
and again had been told twice I would not be charged an exam fee, they
refused to reduce my charge. I paid and have never been back there.

My dog became ill during the night, vomiting food every few hours and eventually vomiting even a small amount of water. I called their after hours number at about 5:30 a.m. The vet was very nice, even though I know that I woke him up. The vet recommended I bring my dog in right at 8 am and they would see her. I did so. Everyone in the ofice was very nice and I was taken right in. The vet I saw was the same one I spoke to on the phone. He did an examination of my dog and determined that she had food poisoning, most likely from a bone I got her from Wal-mart. The vet gave her a shot, gave me directions and pills for the next three days. It felt like they really cared about me and my dog. I had recently moved to the area and I hadn't officially switched vets yet, but after this incident, I did.
