He took into account where the a/c would be installed and how the sun hits our house (and future a/c unit) and explained that it would work more efficiently if we went with a slightly larger unit than we thought we needed. There was only a very small difference in cost. We had several estimates done, and Randy was the only one who walked around the house and asked questions about our plans for placement and usage. Godwin was also the lowest quote we received, even though the unit they recommended was larger. The unit was installed as promised and in a timely manner. They even installed a new thermostat we had on hand that would work better with the a/c for no charge. We are very pleased and definitely plan to use Godwin again for future needs.

+ 1 moreRather than a long list of do's and don't's, I'd say that from our experience the best strategy is to prepare for a thorough meeting with the Godwin representative (unless it's simply a minor plumbing or heating repair: we replaced whole systems), ask questions, and when presented with the various options and their costs, make a decision knowing that you've been fully-informed and that your needs were listened to and borne in mind as Godwin drew up its proposals. Godwin is one of those increasingly rare firms in which you can place your trust and well-being. We were well-served by Godwin, and were confident enough to give them the front door key and walk away, not returning until well after the job was completed. Walking into a properly-finished installation and being continuously pleased and impressed underscores why you can put your completer faith in this people. If Angie's List offered a six- or seven-star rating, we'd happily give it to Godwin. Enough said?
Description of Work: Our relationship with Godwin Hardware and Plumbing began several months before we made our biggest step: replacing our HVAC and hot water systems: we had new appliances delivered for the kitchen and laundry room. The delivery people could not actually install the gas dryer, as it turned out, and recommended calling Godwin. It was a Friday afternoon and we were leaving the next day for the holidays. A godwin serviceman appeared with ten minutes! He explained the work, accomplished it almost immediately and was about to leave when we began to bombard him with questions about future work we realized we'd need to do (we had just bought a circa 1850 house in Heritage Hill). He answered as much as he could but said he arrange to have someone else come when we'd returned to Grand Rapids for a full analysis of our needs - but at least he left us with hope and a number of smart recommendations. The Godwin representative came when we were back in town: he listened to our requirements and our preferences, made three extremely detailed recommendations at three price points and patiently answered our questions about similar products or new products and features that we'd been learning about. We felt as if we were in very good hands. We made our choice, discussed the entire installation procedure and timetable, new equipment locations and participation in various rebate programs the local utility companies were offering. We left Grand Rapids again, handing the front door key to the Godwin representative. During the entire time (ordering of new equipment, commencement of installation, testing and completion of the job) we were kept up-to-date via emails. When we returned once again we found a tidy house with everything in place and just as we'd been told to expect. The heating was definitely improved (and subsequent heating bills show our energy bills will be down substantially); the air-conditioning works like a charm (and this summer will see greatly reduced energy consumption, too). The house is quieter, cooler and cleaner - and we feel as if we've made a responsible step toward a healthier environment. Godwin could not have made the process easier. We strongly believe that it was money very well spent indeed. And yesterday I received the first (considerable!) of the two energy rebates for the new system! Are we pleased with Godwin. Absolutely! Would we recommend them to you? In a heartbeat! will we use them for future work? Yes, and because we now know we have skilled professional HVAC and plumbing contractor, we've begun to plan new renovations and modifications to the house to make it house that meets our anticipated needs and desires: a 19th century exterior with a state-of-the-art 21st century mechanical system. Godwin was a godsend.

Once he was on site, he diagnosed the problem within 20 minutes - not as easy as it sounds since the problem was a burset pipe somewhere between the basement ceiling and exterior wall. He was then able to fix the pipe within 10 minutes! He even provided tips to prevent issues in the future. Great experience! Thank you!!

+ -1 moreEXCELLENT experience. About 3 weeks prior to using their service we had a toilet that was not flushing properly. I called and spoke with a plumber over the phone who gave me a number of at-home things to try before a service man was sent out. This was really great because he said it was his intention to "save me a visit to the home". I really liked this because I was a brand new customer and they weren't trying to send someone out to make me pay. Eventually we decided a serviceman was needed. The person arrived prompt, was courteous, fixed the problem INSTANTLY and the cost was reasonable. I can't tell you how great their service is. HIGHLY recommend.

The only negative was that they were running a little late. i called the Godwin disbatch and they had the plumber call me back from his truck to tell me when he would arrive. He did arrive at the time he said when he called me back so no big deal.
Description of Work: I broke our old Delta shower faucet trying to repair it myself. Godwin sold us a new Moen shower faucet at their showroom and sent a plumber to installed it for us. They also installed a hammer arrester on our dishwasher to prevent the plumbing from making a banging noise.

+ -1 moreI am very satisfied with the installation. The plumber notified us he could come earlier than scheduled which was fine with us. The installation was completed within a reasonable time for the installation. I told him I thought the shutoff valves should have been replaced as they were almost 40 years old but the plumber talked me out of this. I found out later this was a bad decision as later I needed to shut off the water to the sink and the valve did not work.

We have a 90 year old home, and I had a list of "to do's", the major one being assessing the problem for all the water damage caused by an upstairs toilet. Ken was not intimidated by our old home, and professionally went right to work solving all the problems on my list. Where as other plumbers have attributed poor water flow to old home plumbing, Ken quickly replaced cartridges in the toilet and kitchen faucet-problem, and huge nuisance, solved. The total expense included a toilet purchase of 195.00 and a disposal purchase of 215.49 (My choice, I was definitely informed, and knew, there were cheaper ones available.) Ken installed a new toilet on the same visit, and advised me to leave fallen ceiling open for a couple weeks to make sure water problem was solved. Not a problem since! Had gotten a prior estimate for 800.00 to fix opening of (flange?), and replace, upstairs toilet only. I was thrilled that this wasn't necessary. Money saved, problems solved, service perfect.

Description of Work: They replaced the saddle valve for the water line to the icemaker in the refrigerator. But I requested a "regular" turn valve since the original saddle valve (installed by someone else previously) became pluged. He went right to work. In slightly less than an hour he completed all the work. He carefully explained the work he performed and provided us with an itemized invoice. There were no surprises.
