They took our money and didn't finish the job. We asked them to do what they had provided us in writing, and they stopped returning our calls, even after they cashed our check. Four voicemails over the course of 7 months, and they still won't return our call. The tree we paid them to fix later fell on my neighbor's car.

I requested a quote to have a tree trimmed. After several phone calls and voicemails were exchanged, we set up an appointment. No one ever arrived at the scheduled time, no phone calls. I was just left waiting with no reason for the no show.

Up front I thought that Alan's Tree Service, represented by Ed Martin over the phone and in person, was a good company to proceed with for tree removal. In person Ed seemed competent when discussing the work I needed done and I liked the fact that this company uses tree climbers to avoid impact to the customer's yard and buildings (from moving in heavy removal gear). The pricing seemed comparable to two other companies that I had quote the work so I went ahead and asked them to come out for the work. That was when some of the issues began. I had a hard time reaching Ed immediately over the phone so I covered the bases and sent him some emails as well. After a couple of weeks of spotty response and no estimate on when the job could be done I finally got a commitment from Ed that they would be able to come out during a week in early April to complete my service over a two day period (April 10-11). The service team came out as scheduled the morning of the 10th (hence the fair rating of their punctuality) and after a brief chat I headed into the house to work. During the day I did some checkups with the crew but everything seemed to be proceeding well. The next day I did not have the ability to work from home so I went into work and assumed (mistake) that everything would proceed normally. When I got home I did notice that the trimming and tree removal was completed, there were no crews/vehicles left at my home, there were divots in my yard from stumps dropping, and there was some visible damage to my siding. The week after I was in the process of reviewing the work with Ed Martin and mentioned the damage to the siding. He made up a story about how the damage was caused by one of the trees that was removed and rubbing against the siding. I got the impression that he was not going to budge on this story so I gave up and paid him to conclude the business (or so I thought). I did not at the time go on my garage roof to confirm that there was no damage (mistake). Months later (September) I was in the process of cleaning my gutters on the garage when I went on the roof to remove some sticks. That was when I first noticed some major damage to the shingles and plywood underneath (see images) right in the vicinity of where the tree was hanging above the garage. I should also add that this roof was just redone within the last 5 years and there was no damage to it prior to this service (I check it twice a year while cleaning gutters). I also noticed upon further inspection that the damage to the plywood was covered over with a plastic re-sealable bag and duct tape. This was apparently to prevent any leaking through the roof that would be noticed sooner. Based on the size of the damage and the fact that it was quickly fixed with job site materials, I called up Ed Martin and sent him images of the damage via email. His response when he got back to me (about three business days later I might add) was that he didn't have any notes of damage left on the premises from any of his job crew and they are really "honest" guys that report any damage done at a jobsite (in other words that I must be wrong or dishonest myself). He did say that he would make his way over for an in-person inspection of the roof within the next week to come to his own conclusions. I believed that this in-person inspection would make it fairly obvious to him that I was not making anything up and the damage must have been caused by a heavy object (i.e. tree limb) falling on the roof. Multiple weeks later after no visit or contact I sent Ed my ultimatum that I would give him a bad review if he did not get back in contact. Finally he called me while I was at work and made more statements about how his company has never had any liability claims through all their years of experience (find that extremely hard to believe in his line of business) and that all his crew are good about reporting anything that is damaged during the job. He said all this after still not even seeing the damage for himself. He mentioned that the leaders of his company were hesitant to do anything because of the length of time since the service was completed. He also had the nerve to suggest I was mistaken that someone had intentionally covered up the damage and maybe a plastic bag just happened to blow in from some trash. I pointed out I found it hard to believe since it would need to have been some strong wind and coincidentally had some duct tape the bag to keep it adhered to the roof so well. The only credible thing he said was that the damage was caused before the tree removal service was done which I confirmed was not the case based on my personal inspection earlier in the year. The end result of this conversation was that Ed once again claimed he would make a visit to my home and inspect the damage to the roof with his "handyman" that is experienced with roofing. Following this he mentioned he may or may not get back in contact with me (being honest for once), and if he did not then I would have to "do what I felt was necessary." Since he has not come back to my home for another week I am doing what I feel is necessary and giving Ed and his company the review they deserve. They were not honest about the quality of work they perform or the damage that they caused to my yard and recently remodeled garage. Not only that, but when they were called out for this damage they do not follow through with their commitments to visit and inspect the homeowners claims and they also go through a lot of effort to discredit the homeowner at the cost of holding their own people accountable. I learned some lessons from this job and working with a tree removal service, but I hope that anyone reading this review will avoid using this company and save themselves some potential grief. If you do use this company then I would strongly recommend good documentation of the buildings/yard in the area you are having trees removed and also doing a very detailed review after the work is completed. Do not pay this company until you are completely satisfied that there is no damage done or else you will pay the price. I will be following up on this damage with my insurance and requesting that they proceed with trying to recoup this money from Alan's Tree Service. Hopefully they have better luck than I did.

The wrong Juniper bush - large 50+ year old bush was mostly removed. Owner, Ed Martin, didn't think it was a problem, and wanted his payment. Total payment was refused until he repaired the mistake. Work done 10/13/16. Mr Martin stated it was too late in the season to plant, and to contact him in April of 2017. Contact was made not once but 7 times! Mr. Martin did come out 8/30/17 to refresh his memory. It is now the end of September and nothing has been done.
Response from ALAN'S TREE SERVICE
"We are waiting on the commercial nursery to be supplied with the plant material size we need to complete the job. We do no know how long as they say they don't know how long. We plan to refund the balance of the money refused to be payed to us if something does not happen in the next two-three weeeks. A dissapointment in mis communication"

Ed responded quickly to my e-mail request for a job quote. Sent a 3 man crew to handle the job, which was done with great care to protect the surrounding landscape plants. All 3 cleaned up the debris and swept the driveway, and Derek even gave me tips on pruning a Japanese maple tree that wasn't part of the job.

My neighbors hired this company and they parked their truck in front of my driveway, preventing me from leaving. I asked them to move their truck but they refused and said that they had to do it because our street is so small. They wrecked part of my fence and left saw dust everywhere.
Response from ALAN'S TREE SERVICE
"This individual was not our client and when we were asked, we were ready to move trucks , the individual stormed off unresponsive and would not speak with any crew or formen. Our clean ups are always spectacular."

They came as scheduled with a crew of four which was in a great cadence with one person high in the tree determining order and path of the fall, two constantly cutting and removing and a fourth supporting the others as needed. They cleaned up all the limbs and leaves along with removing the sawdust from the stump. I was very pleased with the work.

I would highly recommend Alan's Tree Service. The owner of the company was pleasant and professional. He was very knowledgeable on what needed to be done with our backyard in preparation for a fence to be installed. Him and his crew were timely and did a great job. I would recommend the company to others.

It went amazing! I heard back from them within a day of calling, they came out the next day to give a very reasonable estimate at which time I was told that they would be able to come within two weeks to cut it down, a week and a half later they were at my house doing an amazing job!! The original quote was just for 1 very large tree that was only about 8 feet from the house and going thru power lines with fences and a garage very close, the guys were awesome, worked hard, fast and cautiously. They got done so quickly that I asked them to trim two other very tall trees with dead branches. They cleaned up the branches and wood chips so well that you wouldn't even know anything was done in the yard and even went up on the roof and blew off bark that had fallen during the last high wind. I was very impressed with their professionalism from the second I dialed the phone to the second they drove away. I wouldn't even think of hiring anyone else the next time I need trees cut!

Very appreciative of their response time to my inquiry. Came out right away and gave me a well-priced estimate, plus their availability was great. The guys on the job were friendly, respectful, and did a super job (also a great clean-up job). Will definitely call again in the future.

What has happen was that there was a pine tree next to this one and the one side most of the branches have been broken off. Also I had a cement angel around three feet high that my sons have bought for Mother's day quite a few years ago. The Angel is now broken. It was made of solid cement how they broke it in half I have no idea. I called and left a message. It took a few days and the owner said that he would be out to look at it the following Thursday or Friday, which he never showed up. I called again the last week of February and left a message. They left a message back that someone would be out to look at it and he has been sick. Well it is March 7th and still no call. I was told I have to go to small claims court for the damages. What is really upsetting I thought that I got a great deal and after I agree for his service I had two other bids $100 lower.
Response from ALAN'S TREE SERVICE
"Two trees backyard growing interlocked to one another. Hired to cut one, removed two , one T no charge, it looked poorly due to damage by intertwined froth . When we attempted to move statue which was frozen to ground it in fortunately broke. We asked if we could replace it and we're told no. We planted a new pine at no charge as a gesture of reaching out. Price was not forced or out of line , it was accepted by client."

Alan's Tree Service did an excellent job of cutting and trimming many trees as well as stump grinding in my overgrown backyard. They came out on 3 separate occasions and each time they did the job quickly and professionally, cleaning up as they went. The owner Ed Martin returned my phone calls promptly and was a pleasure to speak with. He offered what I consider a reasonable yet fair price for quite a bit of work. The workers were helpful, courteous and professional. I have learned the hard way in the past to make sure that a tree company is fully insured, willing to clean up and do all the stump grinding they say they'll do. In my research, I learned that Alan's Tree service is a company with an excellent reputation and fully insured. It's important to me to hire someone I can trust and this company exceeded all my expectations. I was very pleased with the work done and would absolutely hire Ed again to do tree service. I plan on hiring him in the near future to trim and remove trees at my mother's house. I would definitely recommend Alan's Tree Service .

"Thank you Ms.Hicks, it was a pleasure to work for you . Your extra generosity adding to the payment for the vine work on your chimney was greatly appreciated. I look forward to working with you again in the future. Ed Martin"

A crew arrived at the time promised. The crew was professional and courteous. They were careful of my neighbors property as my tree was very old and very big. They did a fantastic job with the clean up. I would highly recommend them.
