Mortgage Companies
Look somewhere else for a mortgage broker. I closed on a mortgage for a new house with Mortgage 1 dba Best Choice Lending and it was an unpleasant experience. I worked with Jean-Paul Avallone.
I am disgusted and disappointed with the work he and Mortgage 1 performed. Jean-Paul had a nonchalant attitude toward his errors and delays and appeared to have no interest in the details. This might be what he does everyday, but his average customer doesn't buy or sell a home so often it's not a major transaction. His errors created risk for me and the sellers. While being my contact person, and having sold me on "customer service," he appeared to NOT be in charge or control of his team. His internal underwriting department asked for basic information less than a week before closing and they caused closing to be delayed. Further, there were mistakes in the closing papers and he could not produce the HUD statement until 20 minutes AFTER closing had begun.
I am really disappointed because when I was comparing Jean-Paul and Best Choice with other lenders, he was insistent on how hard he would work to earn my business. I never saw evidence that I was anything other than a source of commission for Best Choice Lending. Maybe he did work hard for me, but that was never, ever apparent. Best Choice Lending caused me unnecessary stress with their terrible timing. They had a month to be ready for the closing date; I created zero delays for them. Their underwriting department still needed "additional" documents three business days before closing (additional year's W-2 and tax return... which I had but they couldn't request it with the others weeks previously??). And God forbid they work over a weekend to meet their promises and the agreed-upon closing date.
I noticed that the good faith estimate was off a significant percentage on the appraisal, the only area where actual costs could legally exceed estimated by more than 10%. It was only $100 more, but this was a high percentage. Of course the other areas were more in line. This left a bad taste in my mouth.
Ultimately, while we closed, Jean-Paul Avallone and Mortgage 1 failed in the company's mission to provide good customer service. You deserve better.
