Great experience. We had received two quotes prior to selecting this company. The gentleman who had come out to provide the cost estimate had literally done over 50 homes in my neighborhood, including one across the street, so he knew what he was working with in terms of what was underneath the home's foundation. On the day of the installation, Marvin and two other gentlemen arrived. They checked in with me and my husband throughout the process to confirm that we were aware of what they were doing, and to get responses from us during certain decision points in the process. They were professional, well-coordinated and cleaned up upon completion of the project. They even applied concrete over a small but unsightly plumbing hole that we found in the basement foundation. My husband and I would happily recommend them to others.

The installer arrived a few minutes ahead of time.  He went about his work with no disruption to the household.  When he finished in 3 hours he showed me the installation, explained how it worked and what to watch for.  He was polite, cleaned up after himself and appeared to be very competent.

The installers were running a little behind in their schedule but other than that the installation was flawless.  It took close to an hour and a half from their arrival until their departure to perform the services.  Before the service, my radon measurements were above 2 and sometimes as high as 3.9 in my basement.
I spoke with John Swett and he told me that a blower/fan in my attic should be all I need to get the readings down below 2.  I was happy to hear that and John explained what would be done by his employees and that I would be getting 2 test kits to evaluate the installation results.
Now, using my meter, the readings are in the low 1 to 1.2 measurement range.  The 48 hour measurement reading was 0.4 as measured by AccuStar labs.
I look forward to finding out what the long-term test reading is when the time arrives.  I would highly recommend John's company for radon abatement.

Before finishing my basement, I needed to install a radon remediation system.  I found Radon Abatement Services via Angie?s List and submitted a request for quote via their website.  Within 24 hours John Swett called me to discuss my needs, and within another 24 hours I received an email estimate.  The estimate was a one-page itemization of proposed work: Sub-slab ventilation system through basement floor or custom made sump cover out left side/rear wall of building to a radon fan and continuing up exterior of building to above roof line; sealing of sumps or floor drains if necessary; sealing of large cracks and slab to wall joint if necessary; and, for Angie?s List members, a complimentary long-term Alpha Track test kit.  The estimate also has a bullet list of guarantee and terms, which answers many of my questions of what to expect.  I accepted their proposal and scheduled work.
On the day of installation, Mr. Humphrey arrived and spent a good four hours installing the system.  I was very impressed with the care he took in everything.  He made sure the pipe going up along the house was straight and neat, the fan was level, and the pipes inside the house as unobtrusive as possible.  When he was done, the system was a thing of beauty.  There is just something to a quality installation that you can see, where all the parts fit together so well the result looks as if it?s sprung fully formed and always been there.  At the end he walked me through the operation of the system, how to read the monitor, what to do if we have to ever cut the seal to the sump pump cover, and how to use the radon detection kit he left behind.  I was extremely happy with the work and can heartily recommend Radon Abatement Services and especially Mr. Humphrey.

Overall, I was very very pleased with the installation, the installers, the equipment.  All staff were professional, communicative, helpful, friendly, and very neat.  Everything was cleaned up.  Would recommend them with no hesitation.  Thanks!
Response from Radon Abatement Services
"I'm sorry the team did not leave the customer a short-term test kit as well. There must have been an oversight by the team leader. However, I will gladly send the customer the kit via mail. Had I known earlier, I would have done so immediately."

The overall installation was excellent.  The crew came exactly as scheduled with all the equipment and supplies which they need.  They worked both efficiently and effectively and completed the installation within about 2 hours.  The installation was very neat and clean and complete.  The work area inside and outside the house was cleaned up. Finally, they provided instructions on how to operate and maintain the system.

Radon Abarement Services accommodated my limited schedule due to health issues and arranged for an expedited appointment over the phone. Mr. Jim Humphreys arrived on time, worked four hours to install the system, was professional and competent and tested the system for me before cleaning up and departing. He left me with both short term and long term test kits, as well as a guarantee that the radon reduction system would bring my radon levels to below 2.0. This was not an easy install, because it involved drilling through the framing boards over the basement cinder blocks to access the garage from the basement. I was very pleased with the entire performance of this company.

Owner, John Swett, came to look at my setup after my house tested very high for radon.  He told me what his guys would do to remove radon from the house, described the process & the system in great detail, spoke about two possible options, depending on what they found under the ground. He said that most likely, there would not be gravel due to the age of my house (100 + years) and the cost if that was indeed true would be slightly higher ... they had to dig two holes in basement floor instead of one. (I think I have that right ... Not exactly my area of expertise!!)
The workmen came right on time, did a perfect job, were personable, professional, easy to have around, and cleaned up after everything. Truth be told, this is the kind of workers I wish I could find in every home repair/improvement category.
After several days, I retested with the kit provided, sent it off to the lab to be tested.  The results were excellent.  Radon levels were almost non-existent.  When I called John to tell him, he already had the results as well, and though he was quite pleased, he didn't just take the money & run. He told me the importance of retesting in the fall.  This guy represents Integrity with a capitol I.   I am truly impressed, and that is not easy to do ;)
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY WITHOUT RESERVATION!!!

The process went very well.  John Swett was exremely helpful and knowledgeable when I called and very reachable.  We devised a Plan A and Plan B in case Plan A didn't solve the problem.  Plan A was very successful, with very low levels of radon in the reteting, well below the guaranteed results and well below recommended limits.  John knew the Barcroft neighborhood from prior work there and the typical foundation designs there from the 1950's.The company was busy so there was a two week wait for the installation.  But they came on time and finished the work in a very timely manner, and very cleanly and with minimum intrusiveness.

Jim Humphryes of Radon Abatement Services installed radon mitigation systems for my single family home in Sterling.  The original/prior radon level was 5.8 in the basement, I ran couple of short-term radon testings a week after Jim installed the system, and now the reading is 0.4 which is normal.  I strongly recommend Jim and Radon Abatement Services for any radon mitigation work.  Jim and John are very professional, the price is very reasonable at $800, and quality is exceptional.  Best of all, my radon level is now normal, and moldy smell in the basement is gone.  I am so happy to use their services and will recommend them to all of my friends and neighbors.  5-star company.  Keep up the good work.

Our Radon inspection report came back with a 12 pCi/L result, which we needed to immediately resolve.  I contacted John from Radon Abatement Services for mitigation services.  He was very professional and informative.  He asked me questions about my home and then was given a quote based on my description.  The work crew showed up on time and was very professional.  The work was completed in the allotted time and for the exact price quote.  I would definitely recommend to family and friends.

This was as close to perfect as it gets with a contractor.  The three-man RAS crew showed up earlier than expected (traffic on the beltway wasn't bad).  They quickly got to work and were completely finished in less than an hour and a half.  All three were true professionals who knew what they were doing and did it very well.  They also cleaned up the job site after they were finished.  I highly recommend Radon Abatement Services to anyone who needs a radon mitigation system.  The owner was very responsive to my email request for an estimate and worked with me to schedule the work quickly.  This is a first rate company.  They do not do radon testing so they do not try to sell you more than you need.

I recently purchased an older home in Woodbridge, during the process my realtor recommended I have a Radon test.  The test revealed slightly higher levels of radon gas than the EPA recommends.  I first emailed Radon Abatement Services, John emailed me back right away.  After my initial call we played phone tag (because of my schedule) but we finally connected, he asked me a few questions about the house, explained the process and gave me a quote.  He said the cost would depend upon a couple factors, gravel under the slab, etc.  He was very pleasant and answered all my questions.  After I signed and emailed the contract back to him, Jim Humphreys called me the very next day and we scheduled the appointment (we play phone tag to)!  Jim said it would take four to six hours to complete the job.  Jim arrived just when he said he would, I took him to the laundry room where he located the spot to put the pipe (next to the washer) and showed me exactly what he would be doing.  After that I went upstairs and left him to do his work.  The work actually took less time then he said it would and the quote was on target.  After he finished he showed me the system and how it worked, told me about the pressure gauge and what to watch for, and provided the Radon test kits.  Very professional and pleasant experience.

Excellent service from Jim Humphryes. He came out twice - once for the initial work, which ended up being more than he thought needed to be done. He rescheduled for the following week after the parts came in, and arrived promptly when he said he would. The work (an entire system overhaul on our radon system) took only a couple of hours. The end result looks great, and sounds so much better than the old system. I'd strongly recommend requesting Jim Humphryes directly based on my experiences. He was a pleasure to deal with.  He suggested replacing the entire system at some point (and I agree, it needed it), but didn't push that at all. We ended up doing the full system. The cost he estimated was exactly what the final bill end up at.

After searching on Angie's list I chose Radon Abatement Services. My husband and I are very happy with our choice. After calling and answering some questions about our new home (built in 1980) they arrived on time on the scheduled day and went to work. My husband stayed home while they were there, and when I came home after the work was done I couldn't tell they had been there, they did a good job of keeping the pipe discreet, not at all unsightly. The pipe they used to vent the radon from our foundation was the same white as our laundry room wall. My husband showed me the where to check the pressure to be sure the venting was operational (we should check it from time to time), which really takes just a glance, not at all difficult. Outside, behind our home, the color blended in with our siding color so it was not very noticeable. What a relief the work is done and done so expertly. Healthy air to breathe and great peace of mind was well worth the price.

John Swett is my hero.  He came to my house which was out of his normal service area.  We recently bought an older house with an oddly shaped basement, some of it built on a pre-existing foundation.  John assessed our situation and came up with a 3 staged plan for his recommendation.   We started with his first recommendation to see if it solves the problem.  From there we are going to do a long term soak test to make sure the entire basement is covered.

John was very honesty in hist assessment and what he could and could not guarantee.  His approach of attack the problem and wait and see and retest fits us perfectly as we can address the issue in stages instead of going in full force and throwing a ton of money at it if it is not necessary.

John was very responsive and personable and very gracious.  The day he travelled so far it was simply pouring buckets outside and yet he still made it out there and was on time give or take a few minutes.  He sent the proposal and contract that night, somehting that I find is very rare, and within 3 days was out at my house installing the system.  His crew was also very polite, responsive, knowledgable, and timely.

I could not have been more pleased with this experience.  When I saw his reviews I just knew I wanted to work with him and I am so grateful that he worked with us and would highly recommend him to anyone.

I called and received a quote based on the age of the house and the description of the location of the unfinished utility room. It was $800. This seems to be the standard pricing for this company. I scheduled work a few days later for the installer who works in Virginia. He arrived on time the morning work was scheduled. It took about 3.5 hours for him to do the work, and as promised, it ended up being $800. The area was kept tidy and he installed the PVC piping through the side of the wall as I had asked instead of the corner where most people like it. This was to tuck the outside PVC piping (not terribly attractive) against the chimney. He was incredibly thorough in describing the system to me. He explained what to look for if it stops working and what to troubleshoot. He reiterated that they are more than happy to stand by their workmanship and if anything happens, he will come back out. Upon completion, he gave me the radon tester and I reminded him I was an Angie's List member, so he ran back out to the truck to get the long-term radon test as well. I haven't yet set the tests up. He recommended I wait to do the long term test until winter. My radon levels were about 7.5 before I had them come out. John promised the levels to be under 4 (EPA limit) with his system. I will edit this report after I perform the test if need be (unlikely). As I said the system isn't terribly attractive but it is whisper quiet and has given me the peace of mind to let my children spend time in the basement again.

John was extremely responsive.  He came out to look at the house a few hours after our first contact.  He was very professional and gave us a clear quote.  He answered all of our questions in a non-patronizing way.  His team came out and installed the system a day early (storm-related) and were done in a few hours.  No mess.  Very efficient.

From the very beginning, Radon Abatement was very professional and responsive.  John gave a very specific price quote and everything from start to finish went exactly as he said it would.  The team of two was late arriving but the reason was very understandable and ultimately didn't amount to that much of a delay.  They apologized and got to work right away when they arrived.  They were professional, worked efficiently, got the system installed and running within a few hours, and cleaned up after they were done.  They explained what they were going to do before they did it and then explained what I needed to know after it was running.  We have a sump pump system so it was a very routine job and as such we paid exactly what John had quoted us.  Given all the issues we have had with several contractors already in our 2 days of home ownership, I was very pleased with this one.  I highly recommend them!!

From the initial discussion about the work and scheduling with John was very pleasant. John was very knowledgeable of the process and was very professional.

The installation was very smooth. The crew arrived on time and made the installation. They made a drill in the foundation to retrieve the gas and installed the exit pipe to the side. The installation was very sturdy. I believe that I can say that because both of my neighbors had Radon remediation and ours seem superior in the quality of exhaust pipe.

When completed, they crew cleaned everything and there were no traces of their work.

I have an electronic device monitoring radon level and the the original 3.1 is currently 1.6 after a month of installation. We are very pleased with Radon Abatement Services and would recommend them without hesitation.
