John promptly responded to my emails and was very professional and courteous over the phone. All of our communication went very smoothly. Jim installed our system -- he came on time, was very professional and thorough, and did an outstanding job overall. Would recommend this company to others.

I called to make an appointment, I was told I would hear back from John in the next couple of days. I did not hear back so I called again and they said that he would call me back that afternoon. I did not hear back again, and I called one more time. Never heard back the final time. I understand that they are busy, but just tell me the truth that you can't get to me for several weeks or however long it may be. Extremely frustrating.

Response from Radon Abatement Services
Mr. [Member Name Removed]; I'm very sorry that I overlooked your inquiries. Nikki emailed me when you called, but the message was buried in dozens of others from the same day and I simply missed it. The demand for our services right now is unprecedented and overwhelming, and I have not been able to keep up with it. This has led to two "F"s on Angie's List in as many weeks, which is very disappointing for me, as we never did any work for either member. We strive to provide the best radon mitigation service to all our clients. Those who use us know well the quality of our work and our responsiveness to any questions or issues. It's frustrating and ironic that the tremendous pressure being put on us by the real estate trade at this time has made it impossible for me to respond to everyone in a timely manner. However, all I can do is keep trying as best I can, to respond to everyone as soon as possible. We have added measures to try to prevent anyone from falling through the cracks in future. Sincerely, John Swett Owner Radon Abatement Services 202-213-6200

Called to request a quote. Inspection was scheduled and tech came out on time. Verbal quote seemed reasonable, and tech said he would email back a formal quote shortly (and we verbally indicated we were inclined to get the work done). No email was ever sent. Calls to both the tech and the company itself have gone unanswered/messages not returned. It has been over 2 months and they just disappeared.

Response from Radon Abatement Services
Mr. [Member Name Removed]; My apologies for somehow missing the email from my asst. Nikki regarding your estimate. We have been swamped with more than 100 new inquiries per week since you contacted us on March 28th. I searched the email chain from Nikki and found only one other email from April 21st, which I never saw. Normally Nikki would call me as soon as a follow-up call from a client comes in asking about their proposal. Unfortunately, the email of April 21st was buried in dozens of others, and I just didn't see it. Nikki is extremely good at returning calls and responding to messages. I've found nothing from her other than the single email of April 21st, so I will find out what happened with the additional calls you made to our office, and take steps to ensure this does not happen in future. Although we strive to provide the best service possible to all, the past 2+ months have been unprecedented and pretty much unmanageable, with tremendous pressure being put on us by the real estate community, averaging more than 25 new inquiries per day, 7 days a week. Every inquiry is "urgent" with quick time frames for mitigation and retest results prior to settlement. I'm very sorry I did not see the email after your call on April 21st, otherwise I would have responded immediately. This was inadvertent and I'm equally sorry we lost the chance to do the mitigation work for you. Sincerely, John Swett Owner Radon Abatement Services 202-213-6200

Highly professional team did a timely and superb job on the installation. At the end of the job they performed a complete cleanup, training on the system, and provided a radon test kit at no additional cost. I highly recommend them for radon abatement services.

I was very pleased with the work by Radon Abatement services. John Swett preferred to provide an estimate over the phone, but upon my request he came to the house to help us determine the best location to install the system. I have a partially built-in work bench in the basement utility room where the hole needed drilled into the foundation and the PVC pipe run up to above ground, but John helped us come up with a solution. I had to detach the workbench from the wall to make room for drilling the hole, but once that was complete, the installation team leader, Walter, helped me put the workbench back in place and drill holes right through the workbench and storage shelves so that the workbench could remain flush against the wall. He even installed a collar in the pipe in case I ever need to remove the workbench again. A test the next week showed that the Radon levels dropped to 0.4. I am providing a B rating for responsiveness because several emails and voicemails I left during the busy summer home sales season went unanswered. However, once I tried again in the fall John was extremely responsive. In my case, I was not in a rush and it was worth waiting.
Description of Work: We have owned our home for many years, but finally got around to doing a radon test. Results ranged from 5.6 to 6.7 around the house. (I wish we had tested sooner.)

It took two good sized units to cover the entire areas, plus sump pump needed sealing and dirt floor under apartment needed heavy plastic and total sealing before air pump could be installed (that latter job was done by another contractor). System seems to be working as it should.

We are very satisfied with the work. It was quick, professional and clean. The work was actually able to be scheduled the day after the estimate and since we didn't have a lot of time to prepare the basement, the crew helped my husband move storage shelves and cabinets away from the walls. They were very quick and neat - no mess and the system looked well-sealed, both inside and out. They also provided 2 follow-up test kits - short and long-term. The short-term results came back at 1.2 so we just need to test in the winter with the long term kit, but looks like the system is working.

The workers arrived promptly, and scheduling was really easy. I expected a bit more communication as the project was executed, but in the end, the team drilled through my basement slab and vented out through a radon fan and pipe extending above the roofline. My estimate did say the fan would be installed on the back side of the house, and they ended up tucking it behind the chimney on the side of the house. While a bit surprised by it, we'd rather have a safe home, and they did a decent job hiding it, especially from the curb view. The estimate was spot on, and came in on the low end.
Description of Work: Our basement/crawlspace registered a higher-than-safe level of radon (6 pCi/L) when we bought our home in December. We finally got around to having a radon fan installed.

We were under a tight deadline for a house closing and move. John Swett went out of way to schedule the install to meet our schedule. The price was fair and his installation team was professional and very personable. The work - including the outside venting - was completed in the middle of a thunderstorm. His office manager was professional and helped facilitate the work and we met our closing deadline.

Because of the good reviews on Angie's List, I called this provider seeking a quote for radon abatement services at my home. Three different times I spoke with someone named Nicki who answered the phone -- although it took several calls to get a first call-back, which should have been a clue to the poor service this company provides. Once I finally reached a live person, I provided information, including details about my basement, services needed, etc. Each time I was promised that someone named John would be getting in touch with me a quote. Never happened. I called back again, was told there must a communication problem, and she would email John again. Still nothing. After trying four separate times, I gave up and went to one of this company's competitors. They called me right away and set an appointment, and are doing the installation as I write this. This is a terrible company and I would strongly advise going with someone else.

Response from Radon Abatement Services
[Member Name Removed]: I'm very sorry and embarrassed that I somehow overlooked calling you back. Looking through the email chain, I can see that my asst. Nikki did her job and sent me the email messages with your info, I just didn't see them at the time. We were swamped with 20-30 new calls a day, as well as a dozen or more email inquiries. It was just unmanageably busy, mostly real-estate related jobs with tremendous pressure to get them scheduled and completed before settlements. That lasted from the beginning of May until the end of last week. I'm glad you were able to get someone to do your radon mitigation work quickly and my sincere apologies again for dropping the ball on you. John Swett Radon Abatement Services

John was extremely responsive, professional, & helpful. The installation looked clean and professional. Most importantly, it reduced the radon levels significantly (over 22, to under 4) and we'll follow up with long term tests to keep an eye on it. Would highly recommend.

Arrived on time (a few minutes early, actually). They were very careful to put drop cloths down so that they didn't track mud into the house. They answered all of my questions before beginning the work, and I was surprised at how efficiently the work was performed. They were careful in vacuuming as they went in order to minimize any mess. They then did a walk-around with me to show me the work and explain about maintenance. A+ work! Thanks!

Great - John was extremely responsive and helpful in preliminary conversations over email/phone. He was flexible in dealing with selling agent for the house we were buying to coordinate access to the house, and all of that amidst a serious snow storm. They work was done in a timely manner, the install looks clean & professional, and most importantly radon levels were dramatically reduced. Also, John has been very responsive and helpful with any follow-up questions that I've had.
