Since 1974 specializing in flat, slate , and shingle roofs as well as wood sheathing, rafters , and beams damaged by water , neglect , storms , or earthquakes . We also repair and waterproof chimneys and brick walls . And repair and replace all types of gutters and install gutter guards on all kinds of gutter systems

It went excellent. Arrived early for both free estimate and repair. Detailed and clear explanation of repairs needed. Completed on time and on budget. A tad more expensive than other estimate, but quality of work and service worth extra.

Mr. Mackay showed us photos and explained what our options were. We agreed to the terms and because the weather was cooperating the roofer came the very next day to start the work. They completed the work that day and cleaned everything up. The workers were friendly and professional. We were very pleased and would contact them again if we had need.

Lewis MacKay was fantastic to work with. Easy to reach, professional at every step, he and his team are wonderful and his customer service is impeccable. Mr. MacKay personally stopped by to provide a free estimate. I found him to be very earnest with an excellent knowledge of the neighborhood and the issues that pop up with these old row homes. It's always nice to work directly with the boss and I felt the estimate he provided for the work was very fair. I trusted him immediately when he advised me on how to seal my own leaking window frames, rather than just tacking on additional charges for a relatively easy fix. However, not being especially handy myself, he eventually threw in the window repairs for free. After the contract was cut, the work commenced ahead of schedule and lasted for the exact duration proposed. That was highly refreshing because it hasn't been my experience with other contractors in the area. The end product was excellent and exceeded my expectations. I especially liked that my new roofing extends up the firewall, which takes away those troublesome entry points where flashing often fails. Despite the large amount of debris created by the job, his crew meticulously cleaned it very thoroughly, including use of a magnet to collect any stray nails - a nice touch that was appreciated as I have several dogs that roam the premises. Overall, a great experience that was very nice to complete before our first round of freezing rain in DC.

After a quick initial inspection to confirm the source of two leaks along a party wall in a DC rowhouse, the repair proceeded promptly over two days. The repair consisted of repointing of some deteriorated brickwork, replacement of a rubber membrane along the length of the party wall and replacement of some shingles on the shingle portion of the roof. The work is impeccable and the roof has no further leaks! Looking at the work, I suspect that portion of the roof will greatly outlast the rest. I highly recommend Mr. Mackay as he is a consummate professional, very timely and while not strictly the lowest cost, does perfect work that you will not have to revisit.

MacKay Home Improvements has always done excellent work. They have repaired my roof, replaced gutters (and spoke to my insurance company to be sure they understood the work done so that my claim was processed promptly), cleaned and tightened gutters, trimmed my neighbors tree branches so they no longer rested on my roof. They are professional, courteous, knowledgeable and treat me like family.

One of my gutters is in a very precarious position, and attaching a rain barrel to it was a real challenge. The McKay team assessed the situation, used their years of knowledge and experience, and came up with a creative solution. They reattached a broken downspout, avoiding the temptation to make me buy a new one when the old was still in good working condition. The men were very pleasant and polite. They worked hard, finished the job in a timely manner, and cleaned up after themselves. I learned from the owner, who was actually directing the whole job, that this is a fourth-generation family business. All in all, it was a great experience, and I would recommend MacKay Home Improvements to anyone needing to professional help with their home.

From being to the end. They were professional. I received their contact info through a flyer hung on my door. And gave them a call to come out to take a look at my roof. A gentleman had come out l, looked at my roof. We agreed on a price. And they were to replace the roof in no time flat. I am very satisfied.

My skylight was leaking and with all of the rain we've been having it needed to be addressed as soon as possible. I called MacKay and they called back that day. They came out to see the skylight the next day (I wasn't present) and told me the two options. There was a patching option that was cheaper but he acknowledged that it was not going to last as long. Instead, I agreed to have them repair the roof (I have a modified Bitumen flat roof) with similar materials and flash around the skylight. He said he could do it immediately and was willing to take the credit card number over the phone to get it done. I came home and was able to remove the bucket from the stairs, even with several more days of rain.

I had called them and he came out. I was out when he came out. I brought him in for my roof inspection but he told me about my porch being in a worse condition than my roof. I didn't get back with him because I had to prioritize what I would have done first. He did followup and I talked with him but I didn't get back to him because it wasn't a priority.

I paid $89 and got maybe $1.00 worth of caulk and 6 minutes worth of work time. This deal is NOT $375 worth of work as it's "valued" at.
It basically seems like a slick way for them to put money in their pocket while doing what most companies do for free - writing an estimate for a roof replacement.
This was advertised as a roof maintenance package - it would be more appropriate to call it a roof inspection and estimate. Something I didn't need.
After they came down from the roof they told me I needed a new roof and handed me an estimate for $14,500. The roof is on a 1200 sq ft house. Most companies would've done this for free. Total waste of money. Most roofing companies will inspect and give you a roof job estimate for free. -
And to follow up on your reply just briefly:
It is listed very plainly that I was purchasing $375 worth of roof work. You were at my house for less than 20 minutes. If $375 can be made in less than 20 minutes it's either a because you're ripping someone off or you must be a neurosurgeon.
And secondly you had your chance to do a quality job worth $375 of roof maintenance the moment you arrived at my house - and you didn't. That was your chance.

"A couple of points 1 The exact terms and conditions of the deal are spelled out very plain for everyone to see and understand or Angie's List would not have aloud it so the home owner knew exactly what they was buying . 2 The member's claim of $1 worth of caulking and most contractors would do it for free is a complete falsehood even one tube of roof sealant caulking is $9 and just open the phone book and have any contractor drive to your home and do any repair no matter how small of fast for "free" or $1 and you will find out very quickly that "most" contractor will not do it . 3 The member's home was outside the service area but we went anyway the gas and employee to do the quick repair and inspection was not free and I hardly think an $89 price rated an F . 4 The member states they knew exactly what shape their roof was in so then why buy a roof inspection in the first place ? 5 The member claims this was just a slick way for me to put some money in my pocket and yes I do view work as sure fire way to put money in my pocket in this case every penny of the $89 went directly to advertising cost . 6 The member made no attempts to make their dissatisfaction with the deal they had purchased known before, during, or after , the fast repair giving us no chance to explain ,cancel or change anything before giving us a unkind review"

I have used Angie's List in the past for recommendations but have never signed up for one of the package deals but I am so glad that I did. After we discussed the reason I had bought the deal (the leak around a pipe), Mr. Mackay asked me if I had a gutter cleaning contract. I told him that I usually hired a rather eldery man who would ring my door bell. He asked how much he charged and when I said that I couldn't remember exactly but that it was under $100, he then said that I should keep hiring him because of the price. That's when I looked up and saw the weeds growing from all the gutters but especially from the very high ones and he said that his crew could clean them for $300. He was very professional and very honest and I never felt pressured. I was apprehensive before he and his crew arrived as I have had problems with the roof for a long time but I felt very comfortable with the whole experience and slightly guilty as we had several interesting and wide ranging conversations about everything from BBQ to brain surgery to the Nationals which I hope did not take up too much of his time!!
