I hired AES to renovate an existing bonus room above our garage including converting an existing full bath to accommodate my elderly parent. Mr. Dave Hill came out and evaluated the project and provided an acceptable estimate. He explained that once the crew began they would only be working on our project until it was completed. The work began approximate four months later. Once work began it was discovered that the subflooring was not level and inadequate to support the proposed tile flooring. Additional time was required for the installation of additional beams to support and leveling the subflooring which added to the expected time to complete the project. We developed a good working relationship with the crew performing the work and they appeared to be doing a good job. There came a time when the foreperson asked if I would consider making the final payment in advance as he needed to get his crew paid and he was nearing the completion of the project. As they had presented themselves to me of high morals and integrity, I agreed and wrote the check. Big mistake. I should have known better from all previous renovations but trusted them. Unfortunately, from that point forward things went downhill. Instead of being there daily, many times no one would show up nor call to say they weren't coming. Numerous excuses were made to explain why things weren't getting done expeditiously including a time when the foreperson was injured, yet no one else was sent to work on the renovation. Time and time again he would say someone was coming and no one would show up. There seemed to be absolutely no concern nor urgency to getting the project done. This led me to believe that they had already begun another project and we were no longer a priority and they would get to us when their schedule allowed. I felt completely disrespected and taken advantage of. I told him to finish the project or I would contact Mr. Munson and get them to send me someone who would finish the work. The foreperson assured me that he would make good and finish the work quickly. Instead he or one of his crew would appear at infrequent intervals over many weeks which became months before they were done. What they left was unacceptable. The tiling, grouting, dry wall, plumbing trim and general overall appearance was of poor quality and certainly not what I paid for. The drywall and painting was full of defects and gaps. The tile flooring was covered in dry wall dust and globs of joint compound. The existing tub was left a filthy mess from the tile work that had been done. I finally contacted Mr. Munson. He was very cordial and apologetic and stated the contractor should never have asked for final payment in advance. He sent Mr. Hill to inspect the work in person. Mr. Hill came and took numerous photos and agreed that the work " looked like *hit" and was not of AES quality.
Mr. Munson agreed to fix the problems and make things right. He asked that I wait a couple of weeks so that the person he wanted to fix the issues would be available. I agreed and expected that once the new people began they would finish the work expeditiously. The new crew began around the beginning of November. I assumed that new crew would be scheduled so that the work would be done quickly and that all their scheduling had been addressed prior to them starting to fix the problems. Unfortunately, we again experienced delays such as waiting for the drywall person to be available and the irregular availability of the people performing the work making it seem that they were working on an hourly basis instead of trying to finish. The subsequent work was very good and we finally have the bathroom we expected and paid for. What began in April of last year was finally completed on Jan 2 of this year. I never heard from Mr. Munson or Mr. Hill at any point subsequent to them agreeing to fix the problems to see if the work was going as expected or if we were happy with the new work. I know this review seems unusual due to all the glowing recommendations by others here on Angie's list, but my personal experience was extremely disappointing. I have no idea if the person who was in charge of my project is still working for AES or not. While I do appreciate Mr. Munson's making things right, I will not be using AES for any future remodeling projects.
"This is an unfortunate situation of which I purposed to get personally involved when I was made aware of the situation. Once I was made aware, we immediately put a plan in place to make corrections and bring it to a more than satisfactory remodeling project. Let me preface with some facts. Upon starting the necessary demolition of the project, we discovered most of the floor structure was rotten and needed replacement. We contacted the home owner and made him aware of the situation of which he agreed and thanked us for bring it to his attention and not just covering it up. On April 20th we started the work. On June 12, 2015 the customer signed a satisfaction form giving the crew excellent ratings in all categories, from quality or work to the installation process. He stated he would recommend AES to neighbors and friends and also that he would use AES again. He graded us a 10, meaning very satisfied. He wrote on the form "Best Craftsmen We Have Ever Had Perform Work In Our Home". He also made his final payment on the same date. At this point I thought the job was complete and the customer was happy and satisfied. I was notified in October by the customer who stated he should have contacted me sooner in reference to some problems he has experienced with his remodel job. It was then that I first discovered there were any issues. I immediately sent my company representative to his house to meet with him and take pictures. Upon reviewing the issue at hand we started on a plan of recovery. On 11/9, we fixed and reglazed and chip in the tub to make it look new again. On 11/13 we went out to make some sheetrock finish repairs. On 11/5 we discovered there were issues with the shower plumbing trim of which the customer supplied. We researched the issue and on 11/25 we ordered parts for the customer, even though it was not our responsibility. On 12/11 the parts arrived at the warehouse. We returned several times in between making corrections with painting and tile. Our office was closed from December 23, through January 2nd. We returned on January 2nd making sure the customer was very satisfied. David and I had not contacted the customer as of the time of his writing as we wanted to give him time to live with the new work for a few weeks, as to give him an opportunity to experience the work and find out if he had found anything else we needed to correct. In hindsight, I would have acted quicker if I had been made aware of the situation sooner. We don't tolerate this type of behavior with our workers. We made the necessary adjustments upon discovering these issues to assure it won't happen again. Our heart is to always take corrective action in any type of negative situation. We want our customers to know they are #1 with AES. Thank you for taking the time to read the long response. I felt it necessary to show we always desire to rectify the situation Please continue reading our reviews and you will discover our many satisfied customers over the years. We look forward to serving you. And remember our motto is our heartbeat: When We're Done, You'll Be Happy, If You're Not Happy, We're Not Done". Tim Munson President"
My dealing with AES from the beginning to the end of my kitchen remodeling was top rate. When I contacted AES and met
Mr. Bill Miner, the AES sales representative, for the initial estimate was very positive. He was courteous, patient and explained
all that would be involved with this project. Plus he also knew we were working within a budget and worked within this limit. Once we finalized our agreement,
Bill Miner and the owner Tim Monsen over saw the entire remodeling from beginning to end. The AES contractors who performed
the renovation, Nate and John, displayed the highest level of professional courteous service. They answered any questions
I had about any phase of their work.
Any issues that were not to my satisfaction were immediately resolved in that same courteous/ professional manner.
These chaps really took to heart the name of AES and lived up to the company's respected name. I saw first
hand how the company and its staff live up to the well deserved adage " If you're not happy, then we are not done."
When they completed my beautiful kitchen, me and my family were truly left happy. I have recommended AES
to family and friends. I plan to use them on my future remodeling needs.
"Thank you for sharing your kitchen remodeling experience with Angie's List Members. We enjoyed working with you and creating a beautiful Kitchen You can enjoy for many years to come. Remember you have a five year free labor warranty on all our work. We look forward to serving you again in the future. Gratefully your, Tim Munson President"
First off, the price above is for labor, plus the materials for dry-walling the ceiling and lumber for inside the shower walls. We purchased the other parts and materials separately from Home Depot (shower door, faucets, lights, etc..) for about $1200, and the cultured marble shower parts (walls, shower pan, seat, recessed soap holder and corner soap holder were purchased from Beltway Custom Marble at a cost of $3,612. All in, the cost of these partial renovations came to about $15,512--about $1300 over the original estimate. However, as we chose the items to be installed, that estimate was fair. We would not advise using the recommended Northeastern Supply Company for parts, as the prices there were far higher than our budget allowed. We were able to get high quality parts at Home Depot for about half of Northeastern's prices.
Although there was a delay of about a month in beginning the work, once it began it went at a good pace, with the electricians, drywall installer, and the two main workmen working diligently to complete the job in a timely manner. Michael and Josiah, who did the majority of the work, were consistently courteous, hard-working, and pleasant to deal with. They persisted in dealing with the minor problems that arose by retuning regularly until the job was completed to our satisfaction.
The owner, Tim Munson, responded promptly to emails and followed up on all of our concerns. Bill Miner, the salesperson/estimator was also responsive to our questions and calls, and was fun to work with.
To sum up, we would use this company again and we are pleased with the appearance of our renovations. Though the mess and disruption of renovations can be difficult to deal with, these are made bearable when working with people who show pride in their work and take the customers' concerns seriously. It is not only competence and skill that makes a company worth an A rating, it is also the way they treat their customers--and AES has been outstanding in that regard.
"Thank you for sharing your experience with Angie's list members. We enjoyed working for you and making your bathroom beautiful. We always do our best to communicate through the project so we an can make sure we make sure you are getting the results you desire. Remember you have our Five Year Free Labor Warranty. "Thank you for sharing your experience with Angie's List members. We enjoyed constructing your roof-top deck and then calling us back to construct your Handicap bathroom on the first floor. I'm sure you will continue to enjoy the beautiful view of the inner harbor of Baltimore. I look forward to serving you again in the future. Please let us know when you are ready to start your kitchen. Truly yours, Tim Munson President"
"Thank you for giving us an opportunity to review your remodeling project. I spoke to Jeff about this and he explained that your house is older and has the old galvanized plumbing pipes imbedded in concrete, as well as galvanized pipes throughout the house. Most of the older Baltimore city homes have this type of plumbing, which needs to be replaced when having the bathroom remodeled. The plumbing cost of your work is what caused the price to be more than you expected. I wish you well in having the bathroom remodeled. If we can help further, please feel free to call on us. Truly yours, Tim Munson President."
The most bothersome comment that the owner made to me was 'You signed off on those cabinets' when I mentioned that the problems were related to them ordering the wrong parts. In other words, he believes that it was my fault that they ordered the wrong cabinets. The reason that I hired them in the first place was to make sure that it was done correctly to begin with. I was also charged an additional $1,200 for staining 3 bookshelves and 3 shelves. Again, his response, was 'you signed off on it'.
I own 2 schools and a home and have used many contractors and I completely understand that problems arise. What is disheartening to me about this company is how absolutely unapologetic and condescending the owner is. Not once did he apologize or take ownership for their errors. In fact, when I brought these issues to him he basically told me that 'it didn't go as smoothly as we would have liked but now its done so how are you going to finish paying for it?
The only redeeming factor here is the 2nd carpenter who fixed the 1st carpenter's poor job and fixed the kitchen issues despite the inaccuracies in product, measuring and more. Had it not been for him this would have never gotten done.
Overall, this was a very stressful and unpleasant experience. No doubt I will never call on AES again and I'd suggest that unless you know exactly what you need down to the last screw that you not also. What a sad experience and this is only a small part of this entire fiasco.
"This is a very untrue commentary. I have been in business for over 26 years and I have never dealt with a more dishonest customer than this one. He did his best to set us up for failure, and certainly did not live up to his commitment in our contract. I will not waste time going into every detail to play tit for tat. I ask you read our other reviews you will see We care about all our customers, treating them with integrity and making them very happy. This job should have been fairly easy for us, however the owner of the school did everything he could to make if difficult and drag it out, even though he wants to blame us. We bent over backwards at our expense to jump through hoops to make him happy, no matter how difficult he tried making it for us. My men worked into the night and after midnight not to disturb his school or it's student and employees. He obviously wanted to make it difficult to purposely not be happy and find reasons to get money off on the project. Instead of getting into all the details, I would ask you continue reading our many raving reviews and consider we have won 15 Super Service Awards over the past 3 years with Angie's List and we have earned an A rating in our work. Our goal is to always honor our customers with integrity, making our homeowners happy and continue serving them in the future. Last year we did over 60% of our business with previous customers and customer referrals. Thank you for taking the time to research our company and I believe you will make the right decision by looking at the majority of our reviews. If you have questions and want to know more, you are welcome to call on me personally at my office. I am a working owner and look forward to serving you. Gratefully yours, Tim Munson President"
When the salesmen was here about the bathroom I asked him about my drive way & gave me an extra 15% off because of hiring AES for both projects. And the men that came & remodeled my bathroom Brian & his helpers &the men that came & resurfaced my drive way Charlie & his helpers they were ALL Outstanding. Thank you AES

Remember you have our five year free labor warrant, please let us know if you need anything else. Welcome to the long list of AES satisfied customers. Gratefully yours, Tim Munson President"

Please let us know if you need any type of service as we desire to continue serving you with our Five Year Free Labor warranty. Again, thank you for trusting us. Gratefully yours, Tim Munson President"
After the initial inquiry, a Customer Care Rep., Phil Walter, assigned Estimator, David Hill, to meet with my wife and I. In fact, they insisted that if my wife wasn't going to be present, they didn't really want to meet with me.
[Second clue this contractor was going to give me the hard sell]:
Mr. Hill spent about 20 minutes to gauge how deep my pockets were before he even looked at the bathroom. He was very knowledgeable and made a few suggestions to our improvements ideas, though we wanted to hear his thoughts. He then told us that we were looking at a project that would be more than we wanted to spend. After I defended our price expectations based on another bathroom we just upgraded down the hall just last year, He decided we could afford a renovation that might exceed $30,000. I requested that he take a few days and get back to us with a detailed cost estimate so we could properly evaluate the project. He agreed to do that.
[Third clue this contractor was going to give me the hard sell]:
A few days later I received a 2 sentence email from Mr. Hill saying that the project would be $16,400 for the materials (including a 30% markup) and $22,100 for the labor for a total project cost of $38,500. I told him a thought this was a bit high considering I am in the property management business and can get their contractor pricing on all the materials. Would they reconsider a lesser mark-up fee? The answer came back after he said he spoke to the owner, Mr. Munson, "No". I then said ok, just get me a detailed contract so I can understand what I am buying and what work is being performed. I still hadn't received anything other than a 2 sentence email. Next email reply -- How about if we meet in 2 days so I can bring the contract and have you sign it and tender a deposit for which work we really can't start before 6 months from now. I thought this was a little pushy and asked to see the contract, which hopefully contained some details, in advance via email.
[Final clue this contractor was going to give me the hard sell];
The next day I received an email from Mr. Hill, "I made a big mistake-- the price is now $48,310. I apologize. Let me know if this is still in your budget." I asked what caused this sudden jump? The response, "labor and material". I thanked him for wasting my time and energy.
"Dear Angie's List Members: I personally looked into this matter after receiving this review. I will address the facts of this report. We always want to meet with both homeowners if possible, to discuss the remodeling project with both so we can meet the needs and desires of both individuals. However, we do not required both home owners to be present. After discussing the new project with the home owner which included a generated steam room, and custom remodeling, Mr. Hill advised the home owner it will be more costly than the generic hall bath he had remodeled earlier. Mr. Hill in now way was "gauging up the customers pockets". We charge all our customers the same price according to the remodeling project, not according to income or affordability. Mr. Hill gave the customer a price and the customer wanted the job done for $8000.00 less than our quote. The customer wanted Mr. Hill to ask the owner for a large discounted price and he would sign the contract. We had already given the customer a discounted price, therefore I was unable to approve any more discounts. Mr. Hill did not send the customer a contract because they did not agree on a price. Mr. Hill did not try to hard sell the customer on any occasion in person, telephone or email. Obviously the customer wanted custom quality work without paying for it. We find in this industry that homeowners who are not willing to pay what the work calls for, usually find a reason not to pay in the end. David Hill has been with the company over eight years and has hundreds of very Happy Customers of whom call him back time and time again to do more work. Please continue reading our reviews and you will discover many very happy customer reports of whom we have actually done work for and also that we have an A Rating with Angie's list and also received 15 Super Service Awards in the past 3 years. AES is all about integrity and making our customers happy. Last year we did 62% in repeat and referral business. Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy response and balancing out the report. Gratefully yours, Tim Munson President"
"Dear Homeowner: Thank you very much for sharing your AES experience with Angies List Members. We truly enjoyed working with you and your husband. Your house has been transformed in a beautiful home. Please remember you have our Five Year Free Labor warranty, as we desire to continually take care of you. I hope you enjoy your new renovations for many years to come. Gratefully yours, Tim Munson President"
We were also impressed with the personal contact and interest shown by the company owner, Tim Munson. It was apparent that he views each project as critical to the reputation of his company. From the beginning of the engagement, the sales, design and construction teams worked together to assure a beautiful outcome. Our Sales and Design contacts, Bill Miner and Scott Chatten, were with us from the initial design meetings through the selection of cabinets, counter tops and flooring. We really felt as if we had the entire AES team working on our home.
All in all, our experience with AES has been excellent and we will not hesitate to recommend them and we will certainly engage them on additional projects in our home.
"Thank you so much for sharing your experience with AES. The kitchen addition remodel has transformed your home to a more larger and user friendly and family room. I'm sure you will enjoy it for many years to come. We have enjoyed serving you and your family. Truly yours, Tim Munson President"

"We do not install doors from Discount centers because of our experience with the quality over the years. In giving a five year free labor warranty we have to makes sure the products we install are of the highest quality. We find most homeowners desire good quality products to be installed so they don't have to do the job over again and again. Our door price are very competitive when pricing these doors with the same quality of other manufacturers. It is in the best interest of consumers to purchase good quality products, especially when installing something that is being used many times throughout the day. Please continue reading our reports from our clients of whom we have done work with and you will realize we do high quality work. Gratefully yours , Tim Munson President"
"I'm happy you found someone you felt comfortable with. I personally talked with your estimator who states he spent six weeks working out details with you and your ideas kept changing and you added more and more to the project. Certainly,he was disappointed when you chose another contract as he had invested a lot of time and energy in your project. Thank you for giving us an opportunity to help you with an estimate. Best regards, Tim Munson President"
"I looked into this matter. We did see one of the home owners on May 13, 2015. We gave them a price for a "Top Of The Line" Decking System. I cannot confirm if we were two times the price, but I do know we are not normally two times the price of any company. Normally we come in at a middle ground. Not the highest or the lowest, but in the middle. We have been in business for 25 years and give a Five Year Free Labor Warranty on all our work. We have thousands of satisfied customers who refer us to their friends and family everyday. Last year we did 62% in repeat and referral business. Please continue reading our reviews of actual work and you will see we are rated extremely high. Thank you for taking the time to read this and continue reviewing our reports. Gratefully yours, Tim"

"This is an unfortunate event. I personally was involved with this customer and event. I will state the facts of the issue: After pulling a permit with the county, we constructed a Screen in Deck/Porch. In removing some of the siding in order to construct the roof, indeed some of the siding got damaged, which is not uncommon when removing siding that has already been installed. Unfortunately, the siding they had installed was a exclusive product that was installed by anther company and the manufacture would only sell the product to that company. I contacted the president of the company and made arrangements for them to replace the siding for the customer, and AES reimbursed the customer for the cost. The work was completed and passed all inspections. I personally met the homeowners on site and made sure they were happy when we completed the work. On October 17, 2013 the customer called for service in reference to a piece of siding coming loose from the side gable. On October 23, 2013, we repaired the siding and completed the service the same day. We have not received any further request from this customer since October 23, 2013. Please continue to read other AES reviews and you will discover we do outstanding work. Last year 62% of our business was from previous customers and referrals from previous customers. In the past 3 years we have received 15 Angie's List Super Service Awards for outstanding work. Our goal is to always make our customers happy and to become returning clients. Thank you for taking the time to read this so you can make a educated evaluation of AES. Gratefully yours, Tim Munson President"
