We are not rookies at the home buying process, and hands down this is the absolute worst I have ever seen a mortgage company preform. Up to the day of closing, everything seemed to go fine. They provided us with accurate information and all the legal disclosures. They were easy to contact and to my knowledge everything was going according to schedule. On settlement day everything fell apart. We were informed we may have a 20 minute delay due to some paperwork being done, but we were instructed to head to the settlement company (an hour from our house) anyway. That 20 minute delay became an hour delay, and every time we called, if we were able to get in touch with someone, we were told it is nearly finished is should be there within 20 minutes. We called, our agent called and each time the same, it is nearly done, we are only waiting for this verification or that form. We had to wait over 8 hours. It appears that in the end they had the wrong date on our paperwork, then the people we were working with were new and did not know what they were doing. I even had the settlement company say they have worked with the company in the past and never had an experience so terrible as the one we went through. Needless to day, do not use this company if you have any desire to have a smooth settlement.

It gets worse. Faced with all of this incompetence and/or indifference, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I can summarize the illogic of George Mason's response to the BBB as follows: a) This person (me) stated that George Mason delivered very faulty services to him. b) This made him angry. c) No one should believe an angry person. d) Therefore, George Mason did not deliver faulty services to this person. After my experiences with George Mason and their response to the BBB, the BBB decided to continue to list my complaint on their website as an unresolved complaint.
Description of Work: My experience with the Bethesda office of George Mason Mortgage was appalling. The facts are the following. 1) I started a re-finance mortgage application with George Mason. They obtained a very low appraisal (not George Mason's fault), which they interpreted as meaning that my refinance effort was dead in the water. However, George Mason did not bother to tell me this. I only found this out weeks later, when I called them to find out why I had not seen any progress in my refinance. 2) Contrary to their view, my refinance was not dead. From another source I then found out about a federal program called DU Refi Plus, for which I was eligible and which did not even require an appraisal, and which certainly could be used with a low appraisal. George Mason never told me about this nationally available program. I later refinanced with another mortgage company at a very competitive rate, without a new appraisal. 3) At one point during the mortgage application process, I had to pay FedEx to return some documents to George Mason. When I inquired about this, George Mason said that I should not need to pay FedEx - George Mason would. However, they never did, even as I reminded them of their commitment while I was receiving increasingly more dunning notices of overdue payment from FedEx. I finally promised to make trouble for George Mason if they did not meet their explicitly stated obligation. This resulted in an angry and unapologetic phone call from the mortgage broker, who told me never to never write an email like that again. 4) Early in 2012, when I was receiving legitimate documents from financial institutions containing tax information, I received a letter from George Mason that on the outside stated "Important Tax Document Enclosed". I therefore felt obligated to open it, and when I did I found only junk mail from them.
