Overall, the product itself is amazing. I'm VERY happy with the design and the fact that I have doubled my space for storing clothes.
HOWEVER, the lack of customer service the management provided left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I cannot recommend them as a highly responsive vendor.
The designer managed to write down incorrect measurements for shelves and so the crew was not able to install my product on the original visit. I was told they would come back the next day and was given a 2 hour window late in the day on a Saturday.
I expressed concern that I was going out to an event that evening and I needed them to finish early. I even called their offices on Saturday at noon to reconfirm the time they were showing up and was assured they would be on the early side of the window. I was also told the crew would call before they arrived in case I needed to reschedule.
The crew was a half hour late from the time they were to show up. When I called the office at the end of my window for the appointment, I got their answering machine. The crew also did not call when they were on their way. I did call and leave another message expressing my disappointment.
It took a week to finally hear from the main office and the general manager who did apologize for the error.
My advice is to double-check your measurements and make sure you get a firm confirmation in writing and via the phone when Closet Stretchers will show up. I would even ask for the foreman's cell number so you can call to find out where they are if you're approaching the end of your appointment window.
contacted by a company representative who successfully resolved our questions and concerns. His regret at our having some problems and commitment to making it right was sincere.
I wanted to provide an update to my previous review. After closer inspection of both systems I found endless defects(some very obvious) in the material and was quite disappointed. I contacted the vendor to inform them of the issue. Consequently, the representatives were very understanding and wanted to resolve the issue as badly as I did. Two additionally installers were dispatched to my home on July 24, 2014. They worked tireless for 3 hours to undo the work of the 1st group of installers. For the life of me I cannot understand how someone could knowingly install the likes of the shelving and panels that I received during the 1st install, which caused undo stress and time lost.
As stated previously, the defects were very obvious. The 2nd set of installers ended up replacing both closet systems. I give the second set of installers high praise, because they wanted to make sure that I was satisfied with each and every shelf and panel coming into my home. They even endured my inspecting by flashlight.
Overall, I am pleased with the closet systems (2). However, I will say to any purchaser to throughly inspect all material after the work is completed.
1) Clean out your closets early- It took us a while to go through all the closets , but we were ready when they showed up.
2) Closets do end up looking smaller, but can fit a lot more stuff.
I would use Closet Stretchers again and while I did think it was pricey, they were a better deal then others I checked. It also would have taken me forever to get this done on the weekends and I am not sure I would have saved that much based on do-it-yourself kits at the local home improvement store.
The first team arrived as scheduled on Oct 9. Unfortunately, this was the third of that crew's projects scheduled for the day, and they arrived late in the afternoon in the midst of damp and cold weather. As a result, the crew felt rushed in their attempt to complete the project as best they could, working through the early evening hours. They ended up working in wet and dark conditions that adversely affected the quality of the materials and installation. Because we have an older house (90+ years) with plaster work and walls and floors that aren't "square and true", each installation had to be custom measured and pieces sized to fit. That took more time than they had anticipated, and required frequent adjustments and re-cutting of shelving and supporting pieces, and this work had do be done outside under less-than-favorable conditions. In the end, they completed the basic features of installation, but acknowledged some pieces needed to be reworked, and that they did not have all of the right elements in the designed configurations. So we scheduled a return visit with the company to try to complete the work.
A second crew (different from the first, and seemingly having more experience than the first) was tasked on Oct 22 with completing the work, and they did go a long way to improving on the original installation and fixed several of the problem places the first crew ran into. But they also weren't able to fully complete the project, as they weren't provided with all the necessary materials, so a third visit was required. A third (different) team was able finish all the remaining work the following week (Oct 29), but there remained a few issues with the conditions of some of the shelving (i.e., cutting the melamine veneered boards proved to sometimes be a challenge, either because of duller saw blades or a tendency for the veneer to chip or flake in the process of being cut). So we had the third team take back a few damaged shelves, and we agreed to go to their offices in Rockville to pick up the replacements, where they could cut new boards with better equipment and operating conditions associated with their shop.
Throughout the process, we consulted several times with our designer about the circumstances we were encountering, and she was very cooperative and understanding, and tried to make sure we received what we had contracted for, and made a concerted effort to have their company and crew address our concerns. That made what might have been a more stressful situation manageable, and we greatly appreciated her willingness and ability to work with us throughout the process.
Their crews made an effort to clean up after their work, and to refrain from damaging or marring the painted areas they weren't affecting when installing the closet materials. They didn't leave the areas completely free of sawdust or markings, but the residual materials and minor marks that remained were fairly easy to touch up and repair on our own.
We are definitely making more efficient use of the closet space after the installation, and things have held up very well these past several months following completion of the work (finished at end of October). We believe that we have improved the value of our home.
We would recommend considering Closet Stretchers as a candidate for designing and installing closet/storage materials. It helps to have a good designer, as we did, if there are any issues with the work. The quality of the work was good, and the materials are good - there are probably better quality materials and finishes offered by some other manufacturers and installers of closet organization systems in the DC area. But Closet Stretchers offers cost-competitive service and materials with a warranty, and they and are worth considering for these types of projects.
We strongly recommend visiting their display room in their Rockville location, since you can see the considerable range of styles and materials they offer. They also provide small take-home samples of materials, which we appreciated, since that gave us a better sense of the appearance of the products where they were going to be installed (lighting and coloring at home will likely differ from appearances in the store).
We ended up removing all of the previous shelf units, patching and painting the closets beforehand. It was lots of work for us but we're glad we did it - made the installation much smoother and really looks great!
