John (Lasbury) was extremely helpful in all his suggestions for the work we needed done. He explained in detail the work which should be performed and was also competitive price-wise. The service was efficient and beautifully done and there was no 'lawn mess' left behind. We were highly pleased with John and his company and won't hesitate in the future to call Lasbury Tree Service or to recommend this company to friends.

I guess he has more work than he can handle and that is indeed an enviable situation to be in, but I don't think it is a reason to be borderline rude and dismissive, not even listen to a customer after asking them questions (this part really upset me and I wanted to ask him if I was bothering him in some way) and whenever a vendor of any sort tells a customer that they are wrong (especially when they *aren't* wrong; I know customers can be really difficult sometimes - oftentimes - I have worked with customers in many capacities over the years and they can really try your patience), that really always shocks me. I am middle-aged and maybe my standards are old-fashioned, but this experience trying to get a quote from Mr. Lasbury was a really strange and bad one. What really surprises me is that word-of-mouth is the best way to get new business and obviously I am not going to send any business Mr. Lasbury's way. Again, I guess he has more work than he can handle, but I'm really surprised that he's received Super Service Awards and such - but I got a hint of this with the few other reviewers on Angie's List who were unhappy with his service and attitude.
Description of Work: I just got off the phone with this company and was surprised that he has received so many good reports (although I did notice some really bad reports mixed in). I contacted this provider via an email through Angie's List on April 29, which was a week ago (today is May 5), requesting a phone call to get quotes on the removal of several large trees. I never got a response, so I called the company today. The person who answered was a man who did not identify himself, but from our conversation I got the impression he was the owner, who I assume is Mr. Lasbury, so I'll refer to him that way in this report. Mr. Lasbury first told me that it takes "awhile" for the emails from Angie's List to get to him. I have used Angie's List extensively and have never found that it took a week to get a message to a provider. After providing my name and address and asking him if he would come out as far as my address, he told me he had another customer on my street, which I found odd as it's a very short street and I haven't seen any tree activity of any sort and I am home all day. I began to explain my situation and Mr. Lasbury was obviously not really listening to me; I heard a lot of paper rustling that indicated he was looking through paperwork while we were on the phone. As I began to explain the situation, he interrupted me to tell me that he already knew all about my situation and I was supposed to talk to the homeowners on either side of me to get their written permission to proceed and then asked me where I was in that process. I have never spoken to this man or this company before in my life and advised him of this and he insisted that I "must have". I was gobsmacked. I explained to him that other companies I'd gotten quotes from said they would speak to the neighbors involved, explain to them what would happen, give them assurances, answer any questions they had, etc. He then asked me if the trees were dead or hollow or anything, and I said "no" and he said then there was no reason to take them down. I had already explained (while he was ruffling papers and not listening) that these trees had caused considerable damage to my property and were continuing to do so, up to and including shattering my rear sliding glass door during a storm and another was destroying my expensive stockade fence. I would have given him further information but he was so dismissive and bordering on rude that I didn't even bother to tell him that if the neighbors did not want the trees cut down, then I would have every single bit of what overhangs my property (which is the majority of both trees) cut, which I have been informed (by other arborists) is legal for me to do. I think I maybe know what spurred this really surreal conversation with Mr. Lasbury: I think perhaps he indeed got my message via Angie's List from a week ago, read it, yet never responded, which would explain his feeling that he "already had a customer on my street" and that he "already knew all about my situation." However, to expect me to be able to explain the intricacies of tree removal to a neighbor, to give them assurances, to take my word that I am hiring licensed and insured experts, is just nuts and every licensed and insured tree removal service I've already spoken to have all said they would speak with the neighbors and indeed, in doing research on tree removal in general and arborists in particular, everything I read said that any professional should be the one to talk to any neighbors involved and should have no qualms about doing so as a part of the service. His dismissive attitude when he said "I know your situation and you're supposed to get written permission from your neighbors, so have you done that? Do you see a problem doing that?" blew me away when I had never even spoken to the man and I couldn't get off the phone fast enough; told him I guess I needed to move on to another company that was more in line with what I needed (I couldn't think of what else to say, I was really flabbergasted).

That’s an interesting review. What the member neglected to mention is that both of the trees she wants cut down are not on her property, but in her neighbor’s yards, and she is not on speaking terms with them. When I got her email, I called her back and left a message to the effect that if she had written permission from the neighbors’ to remove the trees that I would be glad to meet with her and give an estimate. I would just need her address and set up a time. When she called me back on the 5th, she was very combative and accused me of not calling her back. In the moment, I didn’t even know who she was. I was in my car driving to a job. I apologized and told her that sometimes it takes a while for emails to come through since they are first reviewed at angie’s and they had an email problem last week that messed things up for a day or two. As she started explaining her situation I remembered that I had already dealt with this call and asked her if she had gotten written permission from the neighbors’, at which time she said she was “in no position to talk to them”. Now I knew what I had suspected, that this was a neighbor dispute and that this lady was trying to force her neighbors’ to cut down their trees around her pool. I don’t like neighbor disputes and I especially don’t like being on the wrong side of one. She said in her review that she wanted me to explain the process of removing the trees to the neighbors, but what she actually asked me to do is talk the neighbor’s into having them removed. That’s not an arboricultural issue. If the trees were dangerous or dead, it would be different. As for not having a customer on her street she should talk to Neighbor at 466. I’ve worked for him for 12 years and he loves us as do over 80 other Angie’s list users. We were there last summer after the tornado went through her area. I suspect that tornado had something to do with the falling limbs she mentions. This member also put out some common misconceptions about neighbor trees. It is Maryland law (COMAR Title 5 Subtitle 4 Part III. Tree Experts) that no verbal agreements are allowed to even set foot on a neighbor’s yard let alone to remove their tree. Only Written agreements are permissible. Also she mentioned that she was within her legal rights to remove all the limbs on her side. That is technically true, but you cannot “damage” the tree. Damage is a subjective term and I’m sure your neighbor’s idea of damage is different than yours. Also you cannot trespass to access or prune the tree. This usually prevents the normal climbing of a tree and limits you to step ladders or a bucket truck if it’s accessible. My advice is to work things out with the neighbor first. Any legal challenge could be very costly even if you win, which you might not. Courts can award triple damages for timber trespass plus legal fees, so don’t take it lightly. In this customer’s situation she is also subject to Chesapeake Bay Critical area regulations because of her proximity to the Magothy River. I’m glad she’s not my neighbor.

I contacted Mr. Lasbury regarding removal of two small stumps in my yard. He came out the next day and gave me an estimate. The men showed up about two weeks later to remove the stumps. Unfortunately the grinder was having technical difficulties, but they actually removed them by HAND! I was so impressed! The employees were friendly and fantastic to deal with. It is a little bit of wait to get the services done, but totally worth it. I will use them again in the future if needed.

An appointment was scheduled for 13 April, 0900, for an estimate. No one showed up and no call was received to indicate a reschedule. My wife took off work to be here, and lost pay as a result. How dissapointing...
Description of Work: An appointment was scheduled for 13 April, 0900, for an estimate. No one showed up. *Update* - it seems that one of us had the wrong time to meet - so I will split the difference and just chalk it up as a communication mishap. Mr. Lasbury did leave his card in the door (which I didn't notice for a few days) and he did place a follow-up call to me (although he was quite gruff about the mishap). I've changed the ratings to reflect this information. Based on the somewhat negative response by Mr. Lasbury and the somewhat bitter phone message he left me, I will not use him in the future.

I'm very surprised to see this members review. I was at their house on the 13th right on time. There was no answer at the door and no call to reschedule. I left a card in the door, but got no response or apology for standing me up. This property is an hour drive from my shop, so I was pretty disappointed that they were not there. Now they have put up this review. Unbelievable.

It went incredibly smoothly and they were so fast it was unbelievable. The trees were in our backyard so they couldn't get a truck back there - so one guy climbed each tree, they hauled up a series of ropes and went to town. The tall oak was down in probably three hours, the branch probably took two but was trickier with the powerlines right there. They then cut up and removed much of the large tree and cut up the dead branch and left it for us to use as firewood - the entire job took about 6 hours from start to finish. They also did a fabulous clean-up job, removing most of the sawdust etc. The trees obviously left some big dents in our lawn but we plan to just fill them with dirt in the spring. Overall a great experience and I'd highly recommend them! Incidentally they were also much cheaper than all the other quotes we'd gotten (one as high as $10,000)!!
Description of Work: Had one large oak - over 100 ft tall - cut down. It had been struck by lightening and was rotting from the bottom up. Also had a large, dead branch removed from another oak - branch was probably 40-50 feet long and was hanging over power lines. We had some of the wood taken away and some was cut up and left for us to use as firewood.

Lasbury Tree Company was one of the five companies I called from Angie's List to get a bid on some small tree work, which was a try out for a major Spring job we were doing in conjunction with our new landscape plan. When Mr. Lasbury was called he wanted to come over right away and so I believed him to be anxious for work. He seemed pleasant, agreeable, reasonable. I gave him the job immediately and set a date for him to come back to the house. I called back the other four tree companies and told them I had found someone to do the work. Mr. Lasbury DID NOT SHOW UP. So, I called him. HE NEVER RETURNED MY CALLS. But, I didn't give up because I was embarrassed that I had already blown off everyone else. Finally, I found an office number for the company and called that. A young girl answered, said, "Yes, I have your ticket right here. We have been very busy. Hold on, let me talk to him. Okay, 'he' says we can do it tomorrow". So, again, I WAITED ALL DAY, AND AGAIN, NO ONE SHOWED UP AND, OF COURSE, NO ONE CALLED. Now, maybe there was something the guy didn't like about me, my dog, my property, but I have NEVER had this happen before. If Mr. Lasbury had some kind of a problem he could have manned up and called me and just let me know, saving me two days time and himself a really bad Angie's list review. THE LESSON IS: DON'T USE THIS GUY UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SITTING AROUND WAITING FOR NOTHING. HE IS UNRELIABLE. HE DOES NOT KEEP HIS WORD. AND, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, ANGIE'S LIST BURNED ME.
Description of Work: Mr. John Lasbury was to take down trees. He made several appointments to do so and although I SAT AT HOME ALL DAY WAITING FOR HIM HE NEVER SHOWED UP OR CALLED. And $450 was the bid but I never paid him because he never showed up.

Wow that is some review. We did give this member an estimate and her job is or was coming up in the rotation, but it hasn't been her turn yet. We have not gotten any calls from her to schedule the work and we would have been glad to give her a date if she had. Also we gave her an e-quote and a written quote both of which have all of our contact information on them. There should have been no searching for our number. She did advise us that she has an aggressive dog so we had made a special note to contact her in advance. I had to call her just before getting there for the quote so she could put it in. I think this is a case where the member expected the job to be done right away and is angry and retaliating for having to wait her turn. I guess we'll cancel the job. Someone else will get their work done quicker.

John let me know that the large tree in my front yard adjacent to the sidewalk was likely a City street tree, so I should contact the City to evaluate the tree - which the City forester confirmed as diseased and needing to be removed. I will not have to pay for this! He also let me know what work his crews could perform in the back yard but suggested I look for a more cost effective solution given the size of the trees. I appreciated the advice.

Everything was completed as we requested, except one maple tree in front of our house. John came back to inspect the tree & agreed that it needed more trimming of 3 limbs. I was very impressed with John Lasbury. I reached out to him via Angie's List and received a response within hours. He came out the next day to look at a couple of trees in our front yard that needed work (one of them a 50 ft. oak that hadn't been pruned in decades). He talked to me in detail about the health of each tree and his recommendations. I had a time crunch because a landscaper was trying to fit in grass work before it got to late, and even though John was already scheduled out several weeks, he said he would definitely work with me and with the landscaper to fit the job in. He told me what the cost would be before he left and had a written estimate to me within 2 days as promised. The only reason we did not use Lasbury is because the price in this case was significantly more than another estimate we got. I would absolutely consider them in the future and would feel very comfortable having them do work on our trees. Of all the estimates we got, Lasbury had the best customer service.

We recently moved into an older home with several beautiful, mature trees. Suddenly, all the leaves of our large elm tree began to fall off in the middle of the summer. I emailed John at Lasbury Tree, and he came out to take a look. He emailed me his assessment (since I work full time, it was convenient that I didn't need to be home to meet with him), and said that the tree had died of Dutch elm disease. He did not charge me for his evaluation. I scheduled the tree removal with his company, and he put our work on their schedule. About three or four weeks later, we scheduled a date, and his crew came out to remove the tree. The tree was located right between my house and my neighbors' home, and the crew took it down using ropes and a chain saw. I was very impressed with their work. They were all very courteous, and did a great job cleaning up afterwards. My husband does some woodworking as a hobby, and they were kind enough to leave most of the trunk (cut into large pieces) for us, as well. They came back about a week later to grind out the stump, and didn't send me a bill until all the work was complete. I would definitely use this company again.

We found Lasbury Tree on Angie's List along with a couple other outfits that we obtained quotes from. John Lasbury came out to take a look at our requirements and give us a quote. We thought the quote was more than we had budgeted for so we decided to change the scope of the work. John re-quoted based on our modified requirements. We went back and forth in this fashion and John was very accommodating and re-quoted for our modified requirements a couple more times until we were happy with the work being performed and the price. Then we had another hiccup in the process. During the HOA approval process we discovered that due to a previous owner's error, we had to replace our entire backyard fence. It took time to find a contractor, schedule the fence work and get it done. John waited for us to finish all this. With the new fence in place we found that some of the trees we had originally marked for removal were now outside the fence and we could not take them down. So we went through another round of changing the scope of the work and once again John worked with us through this. When the work was scheduled, the crew arrived on time. They had a copy of the work order and I spent a few minutes with them to verify that we were all on the same page. They finished the work in half a day. The work was performed to our satisfaction and the final cost actually came out less than what the last quote had been! Overall we are very happy with the work that was performed and we really liked how Lasbury Tree worked with us throughout the process until we found something that was in our budget but at the same time addressed our needs in terms of removing or trimming trees and brush. We would definitely use Lasbury Tree again if required. We would also recomment them without hesitation.
Description of Work: We used them to take down some trees in our backyard, trim a few other trees and to clear all the brush in the backyard. The job was performed on time and for less than originally quoted.

We contacted Mr. Lasbury to ask if his company could plant 3 large trees for us and reduce 3 large brush piles, comprising the remnants of 8 arbor vitae trees killed in snowstorms, to mulch. Mr. Lasbury answered swiftly, came the next day to assess the job, sent us an extremely reasonable quote afterward. He scheduled the work for the following week. His crew showed up 15 minutes early, were very professional, and got to work immediately. They got the work done really fast and did a BEAUTIFUL job. We could not be happier with the whole experience start to finish. We found this company on Angie's List, and all of the folks who recommended Lasbury Tree and Shrub did not steer us wrong.

I selected Lasbury to remove a fallen tree in 2008 because of their Angie's List reviews and because their quoted price was the lowest (by far) of three estimates. I was generally satisfied with the work, although they failed to completely remove the stump, leaving a piece that's tall enough to interfere with mowing. I currently have several new tree projects, so I decided to call Lasbury again. I scheduled an appointment with John for a Friday afternoon about 2 weeks ago. He never showed. I called his office and left a message, but no one ever called me back. Total radio silence. The interesting thing is that, on two occassions since the tree removal project in 2008, they've sent me unsolicited proposals for tree work. It appears that someone from Lasbury stopped by my property, identified some tree care work (of which I have plenty), and decided to send me a proposal. I guess this is a decent marketing strategy.... but showing up for a scheduled appointment is a much better marketing strategy.

It hasn't gone well. They were supposed to show at 9:00 this morning, but they did not. When I callled, the receptionist said that the workers were at another job site instead of mine. Ultimately, I was told that the work would not be performed until 2 this afternoon which is unacceptable for me as I have to work. I specifically requested the work to be done in the morning and explained why. As things turned out, they cancelled a full day due to a scheduling conflict, but they did come the next morning. They are currently doing very good work and are making progress.

This was my first experience with Lasbury. Mr. Lasbury came promptly at the agreed time to make an estimate. He made an estimate on the spot and promised to perform the work "later in the week."
