 + -1 moreI have a wall pendulum clock, inherited from my grandmother, probably 100 years old. It needs to be wound about once a week. One day, the clock stopped although it was wound. Based on Angie's list reviews, I selected this craftsman . He works out of his home in Olney, MD. I called and made an appointment to bring the clock in. The repairman looked at the clock and seemed to know what was wrong and how to fix it which would definitely require non-standard parts/ repairs due to its age and type of construction. I was given an estimate of $350.00 and perhaps 60 days. Before that time, I received a call that the clock was ready. It looks great and runs perfectly. Apparently parts had just deteriorated with age. I would definitely go there again.

 + -1 moreThree of the clocks had stopped running and one of the grandfather clocks needed to be cleaned and oiled. They came to the house and did a great job. One of the mantel clocks hadn't worked in over 10 years and one of the grandfather clocks hadn't run in more than 20 years. They arrived on schedule, worked efficiently and carefully and explained everything as they went along. One of the grandfather clocks had a problem that required a second visit; at first, it looked like it would have to go into the shop for additional work but Lee is a masterful artisan and was able to do the repairs onsite. They were great at explaining how to keep the clocks properly maintained and what to do to keep them running in good order. I'd recommend them highly anytime. The only caveat is that they are very popular and clearly in demand - so you need to be sure to allow time when you call for an appointment but it's well worth the wait. I'd hire them again in a New York minute!

 + -1 moreLynn and Lee arrived at the exact appointment time. They were prepared to go to work immediately after our conversation about our grandfather's clock problems. They were quiet, clean and efficient in their effort to fix our clock. So far, it is working beautifully, keeping perfect time, and ticking along despite it's advanced age of almost 100 years!
Description of Work: Cleaned, repaired and started our grandfather's clock. Started mantle clock after checking it over to determine it's general health! They also took three clocks to their workshop to clean and repair. There will be an extra charge for these clocks, which is understandable. They were very professional, polite,and easy to talk to. Feel that they know their craft and are professional when dealing with clients. Would not hesitate to refer my dearest friends to The Old Clockworks!

 + -1 moreI contacted The Old Clockworks about a mantel clock I inherited from my grandfather, more sentimental value than actual. Both the wife and husband that run the shop talked with me. Because of the distance I'd have to travel, I wanted to make sure it was worth it. They obviously knew their clocks, asking about the brand, style, and what the works looked like. They were up front advising because of the movement style it would probably be very expensive to repair. While not the news I wanted, I appreciated their candor. I'm still making up my mind about taking it in, but I'd gladly contact them again because of their apparent frank and honest approach.

This kind of service is rare these day and if one gets it, it is a blessing.
Description of Work: Lynn and Lee are a wonderful couple and they do wonderful work. They are pure professionals and we are so glad that they worked on our grandfather clock. Arrived as scheduled.  + -1 moreLee Flemister is the only person in this area I know I can trust to repair older clocks. Two clocks were ready faster than the promised two weeks each; the third clock needed extensive work after someone else botched a repair job. Lee rebuilt some old parts, ordered others, and restored our carriage clock to perfect working order. The three clocks Lee has cleaned and repaired all work perfectly -- and, incredibly, keep time to the second. Lee is also generous with advice on keeping clocks in good working order.

 + -1 moreWe changed to The Old Clockworks recently and the clock now works as it did originally, with good timing and strikes when they should be. Based on that experience, we had a German Box Clock that ran poorly and would not strike or play tunes properly. It needed more extensive work (repair cost: $800) was repaired in December and it likewise is now in great shape, working as it used to. I was pleased with the inspection of the clock, the description of the problems with it, the estimate, the expected time of completion, and completion as scheduled. I have one more clock, a Grandmother clock, to be repaired and will report when that is done.
Description of Work: Repair a 50 year old German school clock that would not run or chime, although we have had it maintained/repaired by a shop in Kensington several times.

 + -1 moreLee and Lynn arrived on time at my home and got right to work. Actually they arrived earlier than expected but called first to make sure it was O.K, which was great. First on the agenda was a musical grandfather's clock with a complicated movement that had not been striking properly because I had moved the hand backwards to relieve tension (admittedly a bad move). They had that problem fixed in short order (bent pin). Next, I asked them to look at a banjo clock with a very old (early 1800s), possibly original Simon Willard striking movement. Lee ended up having to dissasemble the entire movement and correct a number of problems. It was amazing what he was able to do "on the fly", improvizing some of the tools he needed. He went beyond what I expected of him and did a terrific job! He and Lynn are friendly and professional to the MAX. I paid $455 for 1.5 hrs of labor and a few parts, but it was definitely worth it. These two really know what they are doing, and like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for... I have worked with 5 different clock repair people in the DC/VA/MD area over the past 15 years, and so I can say with confidence that Lee and Lynn are the best.
Description of Work: Repair grandfather clock with movement that was striking improperly and sometimes not at all. Repair damage to old striking banjo clock movement. Total job took approximately 1.5 hours.

 + -1 moreI was given an old clock as a wedding gift and had little knowledge of how to care for it and how it worked. I found Old Clockworks on A-List and gave them a call. They made an appointment with me the same day that I called and I met them at their house. The company is run out of a residence by a husband and wife team. They have been in business nearly 30 years so dont let the casual store front fool you. These guys are pros. In addition to the quality service on the clock, I really appreciated that they took the time to show me the guts of my clock and explain how it worked. While the clock only need to be cleaned, oiled and tuned, they showed me areas of wear and explained where my clock was in its longevity. They also carefully examined the clock and noticed I was using a winding key that was too large and was stripping the winding bolts. They were able to find me a better fitting key on the spot (their house is like Santa's workshop but for clocks). When I returned to pick up the clock one week later, they again explained all of the work they did and some extra things they did to extend the life of the clock before the next rebuild. It was a great learning experience and they were very honest and straightforward about costs both now and in the future. My clock is much stronger and more accurate both from their work and now that I know how to use it properly. I would definitely use these guys again if I need service or if I need help looking to buy another antique clock or grandfather clock.

They are clearly extremely knowledgable in this business, and have a very large population of customers, mainly based on satisfied referrals.. His home based repair shop is very impressive. He has the ability to precisely duplicate just about any part needed to repair antique clocks. Given the quality and responsiveness of their services, I believe their prices are fair. I was sufficiently satisfied with his repair of my broken clock, that I brought another one to him for simple maintenance.
Description of Work: Repaired 120 year-old mechanical wall clock (pendulum) .Accomplished all work about 2 days following my delivery to his home shop.

Finding servce providers for these movements had been very difficult, quality repair was virtually non-existent. I then stumbled upon this service provider. To say I was impressed by their attitude toward their work in an understatement. These two individuals are not professionals, they far exceed professionals as artisans in the work they perform. I would recommend them to anyone at anytime. If you treasure your clock, trust its service and repair to no one else.
Description of Work: I have an antique French made shelf clock with a Marti movement or clockworks that needed mainspring repair. This provider examined the clock in detail, noting all deficiencies found, and provided a written estimate for returning the movement to like-new order.

Description of Work: Our wall mounted chiming, pendulum clock started stopping abruptly. Also the chiming was erratic and pretty much non functional. The clock is a brand with a high quality reputation. I made an appointment o bring in the clock for repair. The Clockmaster, Mr. Flemister, works out of his home, and there are no identifying signs on his house or property, so explicit directions are necessary to locate his shop. Both he and his wife are clockmakers, and several rooms of their home are well equipped for a wide range of clock repairs, including the ability to make small replacement parts if necessary. They are experienced and very knowledgeable. While I was present the clock was taken out of it's case and examined for any obvious signs of excessive wear or damage. I bit of wear was noted, but there were no other apparent problems. A price for cleaning and resetting the mechanisms was quoted as $175, to which I agreed. However, after beginning to work on the clock, several problems became apparent, probably as a result of the clock having been worked on some time ago by a less experienced and qualified person. The clock was cleaned and reset and placed on his wall for checking. It turned out that the chiming mechanism still needed additional work. Therefore, the clock was kept for an additional week or so for repairs and checking. When it was clear that the clock was functioning correctly I was called to arrange for a pick up. When I arrived to pick up the clock, I fully expected to be charged for the additional time and effort that was required beyond the original estimate, but no, the bill was still the same. The clock is home now and functioning very well. I consider the charge for the work performed to be very fair. I am pleased to have found such a competent and fairly priced clockmaker so convenient to my home.
