The technician arrived right on time, and was clearly very knowledgeable about pellet stoves.  The stove runs much better after his maintenance, and he gave us good advice about how to keep it in peak operating condition and which pellets to use.  He thoroughly cleaned the inside of the stove as well as the exhaust pipes.  He worked efficiently, cleaned up thoroughly when he was done, and did an all around great job.  I plan to have him back next year for the annual maintenance and cleaning again, and would happily recommend him to anyone who has a pellet stove.

He made sure to have a tarp over the area which prevented any soot or dust from scattering around.  Really great service, will recommend and will definitely use again in the future.  He also gave me an Angie's list discount.  Overall, it was a good experience.

Just contacted them today to make an appointment to clean and test my gas fireplace. The man I spoke to was courteous and professional, explained in details what had to be done yearly and why, and took my coordinates to email me an estimate with a tentative appointment date. He suggested November, so that it would be done after the biggest part of the leaves shedding. So far, I am happy with the way business was conducted. I will update at a later date, once I receive the email estimate.
PS: Upon hearing I was an angie's list member, he immediately applied a 15pct discount to the price.
To be updated later...

He assessed that the damper was shut and circling the smell of gas back into the home.  The damper was clamped shut in the wrong place and a piece of wood was wedged in there as well.  He is very knowledgable about multiple forms of gas stoves, fireplaces and takes great pride in his work.  He was very concerned about my family's safety and triple checked the possible problem areas for a gas leak.

Carl installed a new gas fireplace as part of our house closing deal. He was honest to say that the sellers made him install an older model to cut cost, but it should work fine. He came by in the evening at our convenience to teach us how to properly use and maintain the fireplace for FREE. He seems very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, he accidentally chipped the fireplace glass. It took several weeks but eventually he stopped by again and replaced the glass for FREE. He is also polite and friendly.

In preparing to put my house on the market, one of the items on my to-do list was having my woodstove cleaned, inspected and repaired. In addition to not being used in over 8-9 years, the stove pipe had minor rusting due to a roof leak and the dapper was broken. I contacted Fireplaces and Stoves Md and asked if someone could come out and give me and estimate. I was scheduled for a pm appointment one day the following week and advised of the $95.00 diagnostic cost. The lady who answered the phone was pleasant and professional. Carl arrived on time and quickly got to work inspecting and cleaning the woodstove. He did a good job cleaning the chimney pipe and vacuuming the stove. He was neat and cleaned up the mess. Carl took the pipe apart to get to the dapper and advised me that there was no sign of internal rusting or damage (big sign of relief). The exterior of the stovepipe had some pretty bad rusting due to an old roof leak. I originally planned on fixing this by sanding and painting myself. When I mentioned this to Carl, he said it would be easy and for $20.00 he would take care of it. I was happy to hear that I would not have to paint it myself and the price was more than reasonable,so I agreed. He disassemble the stove pipe, took it out side, sanded and sprayed it with high heat paint. He brought it back looking as good as new with a repaired dapper. He reassembled everything, did a smoke check, cleaned up and left me with a can of high heat spray so I could finish a small ceiling piece later.

Total cost after coupon discount, a reasonable $155.00. I was more than happy with the price and the job that was done. Carl was professional, knowledgeable and courteous. He took his time and didn't rush through the job. I would definitely consider hiring him again in the future.

I contacted Fireplaces & Stoves via email for an estimate for an annual cleaning and door gasket replacement (which I provided) for my wood pellet stove. This is work that I normally would do myself but being disabled with a severe back injury and awaiting a total knee replacement surgery it was physically not possible for me to do so.  I was quoted $150 for both. The appointment was scheduled. Carl, the owner, called first to let me know he was on his way. He did replace the door gasket that I provided to him. But, because he loves to talk and my unclear thinking due to pain and medications I didn't realize that the cleaning had not occurred. I contacted them again and was told the soonest he could be back was in about a week. He did come back, but with a bit of attitude at having to come back. I took my share of the blame since I hadn't realized that the cleaning didn't occur on the first visit, but he didn't really want to assume their share of the mistake either. Even though the emails clearly documented what I asked for and the price quoted. I told him that I thought that $150 for a gasket replacement alone was a lot, he complained that the estimate was basically under what he would have charged for that and implied that I was basically underpaying. I'll admit that was a great price for what I needed, but that's what I was told, so the problem lies with his staff, not me.

After the cleaning I was able to then start up the stove but it kept cutting out. The diagnostic code indicated a door leak. Knowing he'd just replaced the gasket I couldn't see how this was possible. But it was exactly that. I then went out myself and purchased more gasketing and replaced it myself. This was a very painful trip for me to make but it had to be done. When I wrote/called them to tell them about the inadequate gasket replacement he'd done, I had to deal with his secretary or whatever she is in the most rude and condescending way. She insisted that it couldn't have been something he'd done or didn't do, that it was something else. It was not something else and this was clear as soon as I replaced the gasket myself.

The cleaning was very good, the gasket replacement was not. More importantly I didn't deserve or appreciate being treated like an idiot.  The cost of $150 may or may not have been under quoted but, living on living on limited disablity income it was a lot for me. They could charge me nothing and I'd never hire them again, between the miscommunication about the cleaning and gasket work that should have been done the first time, having to be inconvenienced again a week later with another visit to clean the stove, which should have been done previously, dealing with condescending/rude people are more than I need to deal with on top of the pain and difficulty of getting around with a spine and knee condition.

When we exposed the basement ceiling of our (very) old house, there was a layer of lead paint on the joists and the underside of the floors upstairs.  We hired Carl to remediate by stabilizing the area. He suited up, put up plastic sheeting to protect the rest of the house, and first wet-scraped off any loose paint before spraying lead-block paint over the entire ceiling.  When he was finished encapsulating the area, he cleaned up with a high-powered HEPA vacuum very thoroughly so as to remove any sign that he'd even been there.

We were lucky to get him on a busy New Year's Eve day. He had warned us earlier that he might not be able to make it, but he did manage to squeeze us into a busy schedule. He arrived an hour later than planned, but that was no problem as he called us to let us know. He was courteous and professional. He did not merely repair the fireplace but also inspected and cleaned all its parts, replaced some, and outlined for us how to take care of it and what to expect from it in the future. The price was exactly what he had estimated on the phone. We would not hesitate to hire him again, also for more general handyman-type work (which he indicated to us he has done as well).

We have a fireplace that had not been cleaned in years so I called Carl who had installed our pellet stove to see what he could do for us.He came over, inspected the chimney, fireplace and cap.He was able to clean out the chimney, repair the cap and fireplace. The pellet stove and vent was serviced and cleaned as well. He also recommend that the dryer vent be cleaned and inspected. To our surprise the vent was leaking condensed water over two closets and when boxes and clothes were pulled away there was mold in the ceiling and walls. I had the mold tested. The contents were removed and disinfected. The area was isolated with plastic, negative air machine. Affected drywall, studs disinfected & removed. Everything was rebuilt and looked like NEW! The best thing about Carl is that he is responsible & makes an effort to keep his work clean.

The whole project was much more extensive than I thought it would be. House is rental property and had not had a lot of maintenance work in recent years. There was a lot to do to bring it up to speed for Lead Paint Abatement inspection. Also- previous tenant had been very negligent in caring for cats, which had been left in the basement, resulting in a stubborn odor problem there. Addressing that issue was a lot more complicated that we had initially thought, because we had not realized the extent of the damage. Repairs to kitchen faucet and garbage disposal were done in less than a day. Contractor/owner of Sydney Contracting is Carl Weisheit. I found him extremely reliable and courteous and very willing to explain all procedures and details of the contract to me. He was very considerate of the current tenants and went out of his way not to convenience them but was very mindful of not exposing them to any lead paint dust during the process. Mr. Weisheit did everything he said he would do. The Lead Paint Inspector described his work as "very careful and meticulous."

We bought an Englander pellet stove that was very heavy. The contractor was able to get it into the rear basement door with out any problem. He was able to make a 3 1/2" and 2" hole through the drywall, insulation and masonry. Then installed the chimney exhaust system, the air inlet and sealed it. He then checked the stove to make sure it was operating before adding the pellets. After adding the pellets we were given specific instructions on general maintaining of the stove, when to add pellets, empty out the ash and cleaning the burn pot. We were very impressed with his service, promptness and attention to detail when cleaning up.
