After contacting the company through Angie's list, Brad called me and set up a time to come out and give an estimate. He was prompt and provided through information about how they would complete the job. He gave me quick prices for different options and let me know that I only had a few days of a sale left to make a decision before the prices would increase. He was honest and informative about the different material options and I never felt pressured to go with the more expensive options. With the sale they had the lowest quote out of three total that I received so I decided to go with them. Brad came back immediately and completed the paperwork, reviewed the contract with me, and took the deposit. He took care of everything I needed to submit to my HOA to get approval and get the required permit. Brad was easy to get a hold of and was quick to respond, both by phone and by email. Once I had HOA approval, scheduling went faster than I expected. Brad informed me that the project would begin the week of April 6th. I got a call from someone else saying that materials would be delivered a week ahead of that and I then found out the day before that they would be starting the work the next day instead of the original date. I had planned holiday travel based on the original start date, so was a bit uncomfortable that they would be there sooner doing work when I would not be present. I did not have much contact with the guys actually completing the work, but they all introduced themselves when I saw them. The deck was completed within the original time frame they said it would. I am not overly thrilled with the quality of the work. The railings of the deck are not very sturdy, which is concerning on a 2nd story deck. One of the three sides was particularly wobbly and I asked for them to fix it. It was tightened somewhat, but still remains shaky. They left large messy mounds of dirt around each of the footings that they dug, something I haven't seen on any of the other decks built around mine since I have moved in. I also had to clean up lots of cigarette butts around my yard from when they were there working. I had Brad come and check the issues I had with the deck and his response to my quality issues was that the work was warrantied for 5 years, but did not offer make any improvements. Overall, the company was decent to work with, but because of the quality of the work for how much it cost, I probably wouldn't use them again.

I interviewed 3 companies that all had excellent reputations, but I selected the Deck & Fence company because it impressed me as the most professional and knowledgeable of the three. We worked with Brad to work out the details and some design issues. Brad is easy to work with and is able to be contacted quickly either by phone or email to discuss any concerns that arise. We originally wanted decking material for the hand rails. Brad called in Jim, the construction manager, and it was determined that using the deck material for the hand rail would not result in the look we wanted, so we changed to the regular handrail. They put a great deal of thought into the project before starting the work. If they had not caught the problem with the handrail before starting the project, we would have been disappointed in the look we desired. The workmen were excellent. They showed up each day on time and didn't stop until nightfall. They were polite, cleaned up before they left each day, and I couldn't believe how fast they worked. The work was completed in less than 2 weeks, including some days they couldn't come because of weather. The workmanship was excellent and we now have a beautiful new deck and balcony. When the job was completed, one thing bothered me, however. I was disappointed that I had decided on one 18" step going from the lower deck to the higher one. It seemed too high and I mentioned it to Brad. He asked what I wanted and told him I thought 2 shorter steps with a step light would be easier to go up and would be more attractive as well. He said they would come back and put the second step in for no additional charge. I was absolutely blown away by this offer! Because of the holidays and bad weather, they couldn't put the step in until late January, which was fine. They have just finished installing the step and I am extremely pleased with how everything looks. I highly recommend this company and will definitely use them again in the future

Services provided as agreed in contract. However, company to not inform me that excess dirt from installing fence would not be removed from my property. Other than that, overall product and service was good.

We spent a couple of sessions with Joe to come up with the ultimate design for the deck. We considered a couple of options, including a combo project, which would have been a smaller deck with a patio. After discussing with Joe and having a few designs sketched out, we decided to just go with the larger deck and we are happy with the results. We ended up getting quotes from three other vendors, but felt the best with The Deck and Fence Company. They were always there to answer questions and provided feedback. They provided very good documentation to submit to the HOA and we were able to obtain approval very quickly. Very satisfied.

We bought our house new construction and opted to have a private contractor build the deck vs builder. Our sales rep Joe Dembeck was fabulous. He walked us through the process and was always available to explain anything or answer any questions in detail. Not only was Joe great from start to finish, he met all expectations on time, we saved a ton of money, and got a more custom design feel; their team as a whole delivered great results. Couldn't be happier.

We wanted a deck in our backyard and had been pricing this project for about 3 years. After reviewing multiple contractors we opted to go with the Deck and Fence company. Our appointed project lead Mark was outstanding and their team that put the deck together was excellent and efficient. Our deck was completed within a week. As it rained and was over the holiday. (4th of July) After all of the work that was done made me want to go and fix up the yard.

This was a great experience. I am a very picky consumer and want to know more details than any normal person when it comes to spending money for a service. I had reviewed materials and contractors from a variety of sources before deciding on The Deck and Fence Co. of Mt Airy. I won't discuss the incompetence and lack of information that many of the contractors I interviewed had, but, i discovered that Mark Roberts of the Deck and Fence company was NOT one of them. I interviewed over 10 companies and he was by far the most knowledgable, down to earth spokesman that I talked to about my project. Specifically, he discussed materials, design, process, payment option, guarantee, inspections and a number of intangibles that indicated he knew the deck building business. He is very impressive. I chose his company to do the deck replacement for me and was I glad I did. His team arrived and removed the existing deck in a few hours. When I say remove, they removed it all and cleaned all of debris as if there had never been a deck. The team got all of the necessary inspections and other approvals and started the project. By the way, one of my major concerns was how to protect my lawn from the wear and tear i expected to occur from moving heavy materials for the deck across it. Amazingly, my lawn did not suffer at all, because, the team made sure to be careful and protected my lawn. The deck job was completed on time and I am extremely pleased with the result. I inspected the finished product and was so impressed with the attention to detail on all aspects of the deck. I was also impressed with the extra effort involved with the deck foundation, the use of 12 inch spacing for the joists (rather than normal 16 inch) , extra footing material and strengthened ledger were items that added quality to the project. I went with an Azek composite deck. I was a bit reluctant about Azek, but after reading about the changes they have made to upgrade the product and seeing examples of it, it is clear that the product is now superior to the competition. The deck looks fantastic. I think one of the most wonderful endorsements of the deck came when the county inspector came to do a final inspection of the deck and I asked him what he thought. He indicated that the deck was one of the best he had seen, and told the work team, "great job guys", as he left the site. My wife and I are also impressed and are proud to say, "great job Mark and team". PS The team removed every shred of debris from the project, including footer concrete from the previous deck. They left my property spotless.

The Deck & Fence Company were rated really good and I used them because of that and I'm very happy with it. The actual work was excellent, it came out just very good. At first, I knew what I wanted and then I told the person. He told me how big it was going to be and I wasn't looking for that size so he went back and drew some modified sketches of what I would need. He really worked with me as far as drawing up some of the different options and what I was going to use more, the deck or the patio. Based on what I was going to use more, he modified it more my need and the material I wanted to use. I just thought they were really helpful because sometimes you think you know what you want until you see what it looks like and it may sound a little too much or to big so with that I think he was very helpful. The price was competitive to what others were charging.

In July, we set out to have a deck and patio built in our backyard. We shopped around and selected The Deck and Fence Company after reviewing the work they had done for other neighbors. Their pricing was competitive and they worked to stay within our budget. Mark and Stewart came out and worked with us to design something custom to our liking. We did not want the cookie cutter deck and patio that we had seen at other homes and they work to oblige us. The stayed on schedule and both the deck and patio was done in about 7 business days. Now we have a beautiful place to sit, relax, and entertain outside. Mark walked us through the whole process and did an excellent job!! He answered any and all of my questions. We have our eye on a fence now and The Deck and Fence Company will get that job when we are ready!!

Let me start by admitting that I am a picky person when it comes to projects. My philosophy is that a hired professional has to produce a quality of work at par or superior to mine, even when I am ten times slower than they are.
I went with The Deck & Fence Company not because of price (they matched a competitor?s bid, after adjustments to equalize the bids, so nothing to complain there) and not because of the good reviews I had read (the competing bidder also had great reviews) but rather because I was very impressed from the beginning with the level of detail their sales representative (Joe Dembeck) provided. No detail was left vague as to how it would be implemented. Joe not only provided lots of details, but he was always patient and always finished our meetings or calls with ?Ed, any questions, just call or email me?. He promptly replied to all calls and emails. I also liked a lot the fact that, according to Joe, they have been working with their crews for several years.
The crew did an excellent job and was very professional. They arrived early, brought with them all their food and drink supplies, and never even asked to use the restroom (not that I am against restroom use, but when a crew of four works all day and never uses your restroom, you know that they have been instructed to leave the homeowners alone). Both the company boss (Jim) and Joe stopped by to ensure execution followed the plans.
The crew replaced the wood boards with a synthetic material on a 18? x 12? deck. They replaced the steps to the deck and used the synthetic boards on it. They replaced the wood boards running over the railing around the deck. Lastly, they applied a fascia around the deck from the same synthetic material. The reason for replacing the steps is because these synthetic boards often sag more easily than wood boards, and therefore two additional stringers had to be added to my steps. Therefore, as Joe explained, it was easier to redo the steps entirely (we are talking four steps 3? wide). With the additional stringers the new steps feel solid as steel. They used everywhere stainless screws with a top matching color. The screws placement was perfect. For example, on the steps railing (two, left and right), the screw placement of the left side pairs up with the placement of the right side.
I most definitely would hire this company again. In summary, I was very impressed with their detailed account of the plan of action, their execution, their communication and their price. This was not a huge project, I would guess below average in size, but they took it seriously from start to finish.

The experience from start to finish was excellent. From the first call to project completion was only 3 weeks. Joe Dembeck, the project manager, was professional and courteous throughout the entire process. No question was left unanswered. For this being my first deck, the process was painless. Amazingly fast turn-around! Deck looks very good!
What was special about this company and Stew who met with us was that he really helped us understand our options and how best to accomplish that vs the cost of building a patio. This might seem trivial, especially if you think you know what you want - we thought we has a good idea of what we needed, but actually his recommendations were spot on and not really something we had considered at first.
We plan to use them again to add stairs (once patio is built), small side deck, and some fencing in the near future. A few minor items (replace a couple of spindles and two small boards below deck to further stabilize the railing when you push on it) remain that Stew said they will take care of next time they are in the neighborhood (which is fine with us). Really impressed with how quickly the job was scheduled and how quickly and well it went, how clean they left the area; no damage to grass at all. We also appreciated their patience with us as on the morning of the install we had some doubts about the final size; Jim and Stew patiently talked us through the options and helped us come to a decision (we did not change the size ultimately as cost was an important trade-off factor for us).
Definitely a good experience at an excellent price. We love our new deck!

From design, to providing an estimate, to installing a quality deck our experience with The Deck and Fence Company has been a truly wonderful. Co-owners Stew Braun and Jim Amend treated us as if we were family. They assisted in the design of our deck, making small changes to what my wife and I had thought only possible (given placement of a heat pump) to get us a few more feet of deck space. They made suggestions with regard to materials (and cost thereof). Rather than pushing the highest price materials they asked how we planned to utilize the deck, making recommendations based upon our responses.
We settled on a design and price that was within our budget and signed a contract. I had advised the guys that we were hosting a celebration that might conflict with an installation date, we said that we were content to wait until after our event for them to begin building our deck. Despite this being a busy time of the year for them, Stew and Jim made the impossible happen and began work on our deck immediately, finishing within 3 days.
Using the finest of maintenance free materials The Deck and Fence Company crew began work on our deck on 5-13-13 and completed the job on 5-16-13. Unfortunately I didn't learn the names of the crew members to give them proper credit, but they did a fabulous job. They worked in unison and individually like a fine oiled machine, very professional and proficient, seemingly never taking a break. They were always early to start work and stayed late to finish.
Co-owners Stew & Jim stopped by our house each day to supervise the construction and advise us of their progress. Upon completion of the deck we were provided with care instructions as the crew policed our yard, cleaning up after themselves. If it weren't for actually seeing the completed deck you wouldn't have known anyone was working there, that's how through a job they did cleaning up.
We've had neighbors and family members stop by to admire the workmanship in the two days since completion, as well as a couple of passerby's who commented on how great it looked. Jim and Stew should expect some referral business as a result of the quality job they provided us.
The crowning compliment came today as an inspector showed up to look over the finished project. Upon inspection he commented on the high quality of the workmanship, then he looked at the builders name. He said (this is the absolute truth) that he has inspected a number of The Deck and Fence Company's projects, and that they have always done a great job. He went on to tell me that I'd be surprised at the amount of shoddy work that is being done on decks by other companies out there.
I whole heartedly recommend these guys for any Deck or Fence jobs you may be contemplating. In fact, (as funds allow) I hope to have them back out sometime in the future to construct a maintenance free privacy fence around my property.

The Deck and Fence Company just completed our Azek deck and vinyl fencing, and we couldn?t be happier! Before finally choosing them, we met with 5 top-rated Angie?s List companies. We chose The Deck and Fence Company because their representative, Joe, was the most knowledgeable in many areas and they were willing to work within our budget. Joe knows the materials inside and out, which helped us to choose the one that worked best for our lifestyle. He also took the time to draw out a creative deck design (to scale, complete with our table, chairs, grill, etc.) and helped us to visualize it by comparing the size to the size of rooms in our house. This was important because we were having a hard time envisioning what would look nice with our oddly shaped home, but knew we didn?t want your average rectangular deck. No other company took the time to come up with an original concept. Company owner, Jim, was willing to work with us to get the huge project within our budget. They also took on the responsibility and headache of filling out all the HOA paperwork and faxing them with the necessary plans. When HOA had questions, Joe and Jim took care of it all, coming out to our house multiple times to painstakingly plant (and re-plant) fence flag markers, to HOA specifications.
They obtained permits immediately, so when HOA finally approved the project, they were ready to get started. Three men arrived on a Sunday to dig the deck post holes, so that they could be approved on Monday morning by the County Inspector. Once approved, two men worked diligently, non-stop, and almost telepathically (we rarely heard them speak, they just knew what to do and did it efficiently). Our over 400 square foot deck was complete in 2-1/2 days! They were friendly and kindly waved to our 2 curious children who were constantly knocking on the windows as they watched the men work. They left the work site clean, hosing down the deck when it was finished and picking up all the material scraps.
The fence was started within 5 days of HOA approval. Again, three men arrived on a Saturday at 8am, and by 2pm had 2/3 of the fencing up before having to leave due to torrential downpours. Before leaving, they let us know they?d be back on Sunday morning to finish up. They had the fence completed around our 1/3 acre yard in less than 2 days. Joe was in constant contact by phone and in person, keeping us updated on the plans and progress. He really made the process as stress-free as possible. They did a nice job installing the fence and pavers. I was happy with the job, but there was no follow up. The gate to my fence has since broken and I tried to contact them to come out to fix it and I haven't ever heard anything back from them.

We did contact you and you told us that your gate was left open and damaged in a severe storm (high winds slamming the gate repeatedly). We had given you a price to send out a crew to fix it but never heard back from you as to whether you would file a homeowners insurance claim or just wanted to have the work done. All of our work comes with a material warranty and a labor/craftsmanship warranty. Unfortunately damage related to severe weather is not covered. Either way, sorry if there was any confusion and if there is anything else we can do for you, please don't hesitate to contact us."
