Larry and Sons charged $184 to replace a simple, toilet gasket requiring 10-15 minutes including the time it took the plumber to walk to/from his truck to acquire the inexpensive part. The charge included $49 for a "service call charge" plus $135 to repair the toilet.
I was not available at the time of repair and my wife did approve the repair after the plumber provided a $184 quote. I believe he unethically took advantage of my wife's lack of experience in dealing with tradesmen. I certainly would not have approved a repair costing the equivalent of over $700 an hour.
Over a week ago I called to discuss the matter and was told by the young lady who answered that I would have to talk with the service manager who was not available. She transferred me to the manager's voice mail and I left a msg. I'm still waiting for a return call.
Addendum 10.22.12: I've changed my overall score for Larry & Sons to a C from an F. As a result of my Angie's List post, the company's service manager finally called, stating that he did not receive the voice mail I left. As a gesture of goodwill, the service manager is providing a $50 credit which I consider a fair resolution. Nonetheless, he maintained that the price is taken from their rate book and that the $184 price was the usual price. I recommend that you seek service elsewhere for small jobs where prices may be more reasonable, and get competitive bids for larger projects.

Our oil furnace failed on us this past year and was not worth fixing. We knew that is was coming but we were trying to hold off
on replacing it for one more year. Our system (heat pump, ac, oil furnace) was over 20 years old, so instead of just getting a new oil furnace we wanted to replace it all. We also did not have any type of heating or air in the upstairs (1920 home) so we wanted to have an attic unit installed also. We called 5 different HVAC companies to come and give us an estimate for the entire job.Out of all of the bids Larry and Sons was not the cheapest but they did off the best warranty and guarantee. They also came to the house and went over the estimate and were even willing to bargain on some of the prices. They came out and made some measurements and started on the job on a Monday and were 100% finished on that same Friday. They did a great job keeping the duct work neat and clean so that the attic is still a functional storage space. They did a great job placing the new units outside and running all of the lines.After the job was done a representative scheduled an appointment to stop by and do a walk through and to see if we needed anything. They even brought us a gift bag that we were completely surprised to receive. We ended up getting a 10 year total warranty and a 2 year test drive. Basically we were guaranteed comfort and a return on our investment. We have been very happy since day one and are truly satisfied with everything they have done. I would highly recomend Larry and Sons to anyone who needed some HVAC done.Robert Y.

Our church, Word of Life Outreach Ministries, had been having a recurring problem with a water pump responsible for pumping water from our kitchen sink into the septic system. Additionally, from time to time sewagewas would back up into our basement leaving a foul odor throughout the church.
My wife mentioned it to a technician who was at our house for a routine plumbing fixture maintenance inspection. Darren, the technician, said that he would take a look at it and let us know what the problem was. Darren followed me from my home in Hagerstown to Falling Waters Road (approximately 10 miles) in Williamsport Maryland to give us an evaluation. He diagnosed a missing valve and defective pump and described that someone had installed the pump without also installing the valve to prevent water from backing up into the system. Thereby overworking and burning out the pump.
He called Mike Dennison, the sales manager, and explained our situation. Mike told Darren to remain onsite and fix the problem. Darren was finished in less than two hours. Larry and Sons donated this work to our church, doing the work FREE of charge). We praise the Lord for the Darren's . We thank God for Larry and Son who performed great work, exhibited great proressionalism, and performed their job fast and efficiently.

On July 17, 2012 , I had plumbing service inspection performed, a technician came into my home to perform plumbing service that I had purchased as part of my service warranty plan. I had forgotten that this service was a part of my plan. The technician inspected all the: sinks, toliets, drains and tested the water quality. He explained every aspect of the inspection and made recommendations that were very helpful. I was really impressed with this part of my warranty, because the inspection prevents unforeseen plumbing problems. Also, the technician Darren was : friendly,knowledgeable and very professional.
The Service warranty- I purchased this warranty last year, it's reasonable and affordable;as a homeowner it is great to have. I am very proud to be a Larry & Sons customer.

The contract was signed in October 2011 and a deposit made. An additional deposit was made on or about December. The water heater was installed in December in the wrong location which caused a revamping of the layout for the bathroom. The installers acted very professional however their work left something to be desired. The layout of the pipes were zig zagged around existing heating pipework instead of going in a straight line under those pipes. The gas line was installed crossing over an exposed floor joist (basement). As this is a plumbing company I was disappointed with the work. The water heater did work and no further work was done until February 2012. Day one of construction I found out that the bathroom would not be installed as planned due to code restrictions it had to be more than 2 feet from the wall where I wanted the installation to occur., in order to achieve a ceiling height that would be code compliant. This would push my laundry area too far out into the walkway , so the room had to be reconfigured yet again, I was quite specific during the planning phase regarding certain furnishings and fixtures. I asked for a vanity with a toe kick , installed is a vanity with legs, I asked for the shower head to be in the ceiling, installed is a shower head 3/4 the way up the wall. I asked for a rounded toilet bowl, installed is an elongated toilet bowl, the floor was to be leveled, it is not, which causes the toilet to rock slightly against the floor when it is sat upon. (The company did come back to "fix" this once which involved re tightening it down to the floor, that lasted about one month before the problem again occurred). They have not answered my last inquiry as to fixing it. The laundry area got no finished flooring which I thought should have been included. The construction lasted more than 7 weeks from start to finish. I asked on day one of the planning stages to have two windows removed and closed in with cinder block. I was told that they would try to find someone to do this, in the end it cost me an additional 900.00 to have that done, arranged by their company which pushed the cost from $15,306.00 to $16206.00. In addition I was to receive a "free" whole house water conditioner. The work was completed several weeks and I had to ask 2 or 3 times before they installed the water conditioner. In addition I ended up with an additional pump that was not planned because the plumbers did not (or could not ) achieve a downward run on the shower pipe drain. (One pump was to drain the toilet sink and shower in the original plan.) Although I was not charged extra for the additional pump it will present an extra cost in the future if something goes wrong with it, my shower will not drain and the sink will back up into the shower. Overall, Iam quite disappointed as I felt the subcontractors did a better job than the plumbers and this is a plumbing company.
UPDATE: As of July 31st I have had warranty work performed by Larry and Son's . I have to say that I was quite impressed with their response. Mike addressed the issues I had very professionally. He asked what he could do to make me happy, I decided at this point that it would be futile to attempt to make design changes etc and requested that he make what I had work as planned. The toilet was reset to correct a problem with movement and the shower pump was replaced as it had stopped working in addition the shower faucet handle had come loose and that was also fixed. Mike was very good about communicating with me what was happening each step of the way . The company was prompt and professional. Although originally we had a different vision of the finished product, I have to say I am quite impressed with their responsiveness and concern to make things right. Thank you Mike !

They take care of my furnace and they have also done some plumbing stuff for me. They do remodeling also. They are not cheap but none of them are. They are very prompt and they will come on an emergency basis. They are very good at what they do. They've always been able to fix the problem. Sometimes not the very first time but they can fix it.

the plumber that showed up was professional. we had no choice on easter sunday to call in a plumber. all of our sources of water was backing up into the downstairs toliet and shower. the clog was thru the downstairs toilet leading to the outside pipes. we were told in the beginnning of the price for them to come out. $169.99. I could live with that but not until the plumber was done using an electrical snake that we were told if we didn't sign on for a year contract to use them it would cost us over $1000.00 for the day. we were exhausted by then due to the fact of all the clean up and it being a holiday. so of course we signed the contract for 700.00. who wouldn't at that time of desperation. we feel as if we were raped by this company, we have had a contractor in since this date redoing our basement. After the fact of course we were also told by friends they ripped us off. it should not have been more than 400-450 for the job. trust me the worker worked probably for 20 minutes and that included him removing the toiliet. I will never recommend this company for they took serious advantage of us on that day and they knew it.

"Easter Sunday morning dispatched a fully stock service truck, journeyman licensed plumbing tech, crisp clean uniform, clean cut, polite, highly trained, background checked, hair screen pre-employment drug screen, random drug screening, 150 hours of training per year, expert customer service, and onsite to help customer with her issue in less that 67 minutes of customer call. The member used some very harsh words that are not justified. The member says she should have paid no more than $450 but dispute everything she paid $505 so we are talking about $55. Because the additional $195 is the cost of the paid services for the HVAC spring and fall equipment tech tune and cleaning. I have already offered the member a refund of her service agreement still allowing the discounted price to stand. There is no fight because I am here to make my customer's happy but hyperbole is not necessary for me to respond. Thank you for your consideration."

We had a pipe leaking behind our bath tub. Since our house is old, we had no access panel. The man from Larry and Son's came and gave us an estimate. Since we were in a bind, we went with them because they were available to do it right then. He made a hole in the wall to access the plumbing. When he was in there he gave us a story of gloom and doom, that there was a ton of work that needed to be done to update the plumbing and that there was "probably" a lot of rot. We asked him to just fix the immediate problem which he did. He then put the access panel on. It did not fit correctly and left a gap. He said they could only fix that, if we went with their company to do the updates "needed" in our bathroom. He was there for about 1 -2 hours and it cost about $1000. We later had the "necessary work" done that Larry and sons said we needed done. We chose to do it for cosmetic reason in the bathroom and to get a new tub. The work that they said was necessary though, it turns out was not even needed in our final project.

"The work order that this member is referring to was actually Oct 30, 2009 for $188 and she took four months to pay it at no additional charge paid Feb 15 2010. No work has been completed for her since her garbage disposal stoppage was taken care of quickly. The coupon stated that we offered at the time was for $50 off when spending more than $200 on any work performed. Since Barbara's work was for less the coupon did not apply. They are not much. My water has a lot of chemicals in it and is very hard. The machine they sold me lasted about 9 months before I started having problems. I got so tired with dealing with this guy, that I had it removed, and put back in the old-time hot water heater.

"I was in constant contact with the member and personally responding to a call on the fourth of July in the late evening of 2011 to find that she had accidentally turned the power off to the unit from a switch in the garage her builder had installed during construction. Power back on and had not heard from the member till this review. We tested the water and recommended water conditioner for the hard water but the member refused the protection it would give her home from the ill affects of hard water. I was very sorry to hear the member was not happy with her unit which she wanted from a list of options given when replacing her broken water heater some three years before. They came and opened the drain without moving all the roots. Said that our drains had basically collapsed, that our tree in the front yard will need to be removed & n ew drains to be laid. That we had ceramic drains when we actually have cast iron drains. The total cost to prevent this would be upwards of $7k. We called other plumbers in the area to get a quote for the work. The replies all said our drains are fine, the drains need snaking every two years. Two months after Larry & Sons did their job, the drains were reblocked. We called Rotorooter. They did the same job for $200, that Larry & Sons are well known for over charging, & that the job was not done properly. Since Rotorooter came we had no problems.
