SMITHWRIGHT HOME IMPROVEMENT SERVICES, LLC
About us
Smithwright Home Improvement is a general contracting company providing a broad range of home improvement and home repair services in the Suburban Maryland area. I am a company of one and use subcontractors only when absolutely necessary. 99% of the work I take on is performed by me. Smithwright Home Improvement is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission since 2004 under license# 89597. I've done mostly flat-fee work under contract with the home owner. Small projects, or handyman related work, bills out at $80/hour with a 3 hour minimum. Angie's List customers receive a 10% discount off labor charges that invoice over $500.00. Discounts do not apply to materials cost which are in addition to labor charges. I do not add any additional costs to materials. You pay what I pay. My business, up to now, has grown strictly through referrals from satisfied customers. In the 20 years since I started this business, I have served hundreds of home owners in this area doing everything from simple drywall work to building large room additions and decks. I pride myself in delivering results that far exceed my customer's expectations. (Please note, the nature of my work can make it quite difficult to take phone calls during the day. The last thing I want is to offend anyone by not picking up or not returning phone calls. Please contact me via text at 410-707-5542 or email at [email protected] as well and I will try to respond to you within 24 to 36 hours. Thank you!).

My wife and I are delighted with Bill?s performance on this task. In fact, we?d not only hire him again, we?ve already done so. He?s going to paint our front door and trim next week.
Then I asked him if he had an extra couple of minutes to help me remove an old toilet that I could break free. The bolts were rusted. Some heat and muscle and that toilet is gone.
I'll have him back if I need handyman services again.
As a follow-on, Bill did eventually get back to me and apologized profusely for missing my email. I've therefore amended my grade from "F" to "C" as he was professional enough to follow-up.
"I am so very sorry! I remember reading your message last Tuesday when you sent it and have no idea why I didn't reply right then and there. No excuses. Guilty as charged. Would certainly welcome the opportunity to give it another go, but totally understand if it's out of the question. Again, my sincerest apologies. Bill Smith"
Bill told me that his colleague Joseph would be best suited for the job and that Joseph would call me that evening. Joseph did call and we were able to set up an appointment for the next morning. He told me that he had an appointment earlier in the day and that he would try to get to me by 11 a.m. or earlier.
Joseph called me the day of my appointment (today) when he was leaving his work site, and he did arrive on time. Joseph is friendly and professional. There is a three-hour minimum for services, but he finished before the three hours were up. He took it upon himself to fix a toilet that I didn't even know was broken (and showed me how to repair it should it break again), and offered to take care of anything else on my "honey do list." He even investigated some suspicious weeds in my back yard that might have been poison ivy (they weren't).
He said that he really enjoys fixing things, and it showed. He took care to do a good job. I just moved into my first house a week ago, and I know next to nothing about home repair. It would have been easy to take advantage of my obvious naivete, but I felt that he really just wanted to make sure that I was happy with my home.
I will definitely be using his services again.
Bill and Joe did excellent work, and they were very conscientious about doing the best job they could. I am very impressed with the quality of their work and with their determination to get it done right. Some of the tasks were very challenging, especially the repairs of rotted wood in several door and window frames, but Bill stuck to it and completed everything except one window (which was rotted so badly that it will have to be replaced). They always went out of their way to do the job well, but were very reasonable when it came to charging for their work. They also did an excellent job of cleaning up after they finished each day and of removing and disposing of trash.
My only quibble is that Bill is apparently so good at what he does, and his reputation is so strong, that he books up well in advance and it is hard for him to respond promptly to short-fuse projects. Luckily my needs were not urgent and I was able to wait until he could schedule me in.
Overall, an outstanding contractor, exceptionally professional, and a pleasure to deal with. I will definitely be calling on him again for future projects around the house.
The paint in the master bath had been peeling off the ceiling and walls, especially over the shower. I tried prepping and painting myself, and the new paint lasted through about 1 month before it started cracking and peeling again. Asked for several opinions, and everyone said that we needed to install an exhaust fan first, and then fix the paint.
Our first challenge was figuring out how to install and properly vent the fan, in an older house that was built without bathroom fans. The other upstairs bath was remodeled previously, so we checked out how it was done. To our surprise, the exhaust fan was not vented at all, but just buried in a corner of the attic under insulation!
The next challenge was finding someone who could handle all of the aspects of the job, and who was willing to do a small job rather than totally remodeling the whole bathroom. After several false starts, I found Smithwright Home Improvement on Angie's List.
The first thing that impressed me about Bill Smith is that he responds to emails very promptly- usually the same day. He came out a few days later to do an estimate. After that it took several weeks to actually schedule the job. But, since he does basically all the work himself, and nothing was time-critical about our job, it was reasonable to wait.
Bill came up with a creative solution to vent both bathrooms, without putting new holes into the house. For the first couple of days we were concerned that the work was going slowly. But over time we really grew to appreciate his slow, careful, and thorough work style. Also the final bill was identical to the quote, even though the job took a little longer than we were expecting.
A few months later, everything is looking great and performing well. We absolutely plan to work with Smithwright Home Improvement again in the future.
He was very meticulous and professional, he did a great job, making sure to clean up each day.
We are completely satisfied with the quality of the work performed and will certainly use
him again.

"Actually, I feel the customer is being gracious with her grading. I am not living up to the professional standard I like to think I am, at least not in this case, and probably deserve lower marks in some areas. I truly regret leaving her in this situation and will try to rectify this issue as quickly as possible."
