SMITHWRIGHT HOME IMPROVEMENT SERVICES, LLC
About us
Smithwright Home Improvement is a general contracting company providing a broad range of home improvement and home repair services in the Suburban Maryland area. I am a company of one and use subcontractors only when absolutely necessary. 99% of the work I take on is performed by me. Smithwright Home Improvement is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission since 2004 under license# 89597. I've done mostly flat-fee work under contract with the home owner. Small projects, or handyman related work, bills out at $80/hour with a 3 hour minimum. Angie's List customers receive a 10% discount off labor charges that invoice over $500.00. Discounts do not apply to materials cost which are in addition to labor charges. I do not add any additional costs to materials. You pay what I pay. My business, up to now, has grown strictly through referrals from satisfied customers. In the 20 years since I started this business, I have served hundreds of home owners in this area doing everything from simple drywall work to building large room additions and decks. I pride myself in delivering results that far exceed my customer's expectations. (Please note, the nature of my work can make it quite difficult to take phone calls during the day. The last thing I want is to offend anyone by not picking up or not returning phone calls. Please contact me via text at 410-707-5542 or email at [email protected] as well and I will try to respond to you within 24 to 36 hours. Thank you!).

with. We have had work performed at three homes in our family. Each time the
job was completed properly and within the estimate. When we were selling my
mother?s home, and he and Joe came up with several additional ideas that made
the house more presentable. Their work is meticulous and we will continue
working with them whenever we need their services.
The first task was to hang a pre-purchased curtain rod/holder in an upstairs bedroom. While we do have plaster walls, the task took over 75 minutes.
The second curtain rod downstairs involved removing existing metal rod/holder and installing new wooden rod/holders. The new rod holders are up, but the open "wounds" where the previous hardware had been removed are still gaping on my freshly painted wall. We feel that a contractor should have been prepared to slap some compound on those two spots and ask if we wanted to sand and paint it ourselves, or would we like him to do so. That would have been a nice professional touch.
Next, of two matching paintings on either side of the couch, one needed to be adjusted to match the wall height of the other. A difference of 4 or 5 inches or so. The contractor made the adjustment and just looking we could see that it was not quite correct. Almost, but not quite. He was happy to make the correction.
Hanging the oak mirror in the dining room went very well. It is rather heavy and needed a secure hanger.
He was a very pleasant individual, and went above and beyond to make any adjustments to make us happy.
"First of all I just want to say that this is one of the most painful reviews I have ever received, especially for work I actually performed. I had no idea you were this dissatisfied with my work and professionalism upon leaving and would not have left without trying to make it right. Yes, it did take me longer even by my standard to hang the first curtain rod. I don't work with lathe and plaster walls very often and I couldn't find a stud to screw into so I had to use toggle bolts that required much larger holes to be drilled into the wall. I worked at a safe pace in order to get it straight and hopefully right the first time. Also, too much time spent going back and forth to the truck for the right parts didn't help The patch work on the wall downstairs was a total oversight on my part. I should not have left it that way and had drywall compound in my truck I could have used to do so. I will be more than happy to come back and do this for you if you wish. With regard to my comment about women having a better eye for hanging straight pictures on walls, that was intended as more a self effacing comment, not a sarcastic sexist dig. I am so sorry I offended you and should have clarified the intent of my comment. I should know better than to make comments that can be so easily misunderstood and will certainly be mindful of that from now on. Lastly, I erroneously overcharged you by $60. Your bill should have only been $180 for three hours not $240. I will send you a refund for this plus another $30 to hopefully offset some of your frustration with me. In closing I would just like to add that I work really hard to please my customers. Reports matter a lot to me and I didn't earn the number of "A" reports by leaving folks this disenchanted with my performance and professionalism. Please, please let me know if there is anything else I can do to earn your satisfaction and respect with regard to this matter. I really want to make this right. Thank you! Bill Smith"
Bill showed up on time, repairs were fixed perfectly, he cleaned everything before he left, was very professional and confident in his work.
Bill is a very personable man. He is very professional and punctual. He is also reliable and very reasonable.
He came to my house a few days after I made the appointment. He is quite the worker. His ethics are impeccable.
I was completely satisfied with the job he did and would certainly call him again as well as recommend him to my friends and family.
The only points we dock for Bill is that pricing was not fully discussed up front and the end price entailed a balloon cost due to the difficulty. Also, I'm a new homeowner so I was expecting that Bill would work directly with the door supplier (Lowe's) after we picked our door style. Instead he asked that I place the order with Lowe's, which was a good learning experience but difficult b/c they asked many questions that I didn't have the answers to.
Bottom Line: Bill is a great handyman that I would gladly hire again!
BTW, I got multiple estimates for this job and Bill's price beat out all of the other estimates. Bill is honest and good to his word. You won't find a more professional man to work in your home! I recommend Bill Smith very highly!
appreciated their professional integrity. They were both consummate professional!
"My sincerest apologies, [ member's name removed]. I wrote it down when we spoke but put it in my calendar for Monday the 17th and not the 10th. I regret the confusion and the resulting frustration it caused you."
He arrived on time for the estimate, identified exactly what repairs were needed, and provided me an estimate in a very timely manner. He performed the work for the amount reflected in the estimate.
Mr. Smith showed a willingness to work around my schedule. Once we agreed on the date and time, he was, again, on time and completed the work according to the agreed upon schedule.
All work was done to my satisfaction. There were no surprises, additional costs, or a requirement to extend the time for the repairs.
Working with Mr. Smith has been a pleasure and I will likely bring him back in for additional work.

"I concur. I completely screwed this up and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and frustration I caused you as a result. Unfortunately this is not the first time I've dropped the ball on a potential customer this past month and am addressing my apparent shortcoming in follow up practices. Again, my sincerest apology to you,[Member name removed]"
what I needed done, then provided an estimate a few days later. Bill?s was the lowest estimate, which, combined with his professionalism and personality, led me to choose him for the job.
Hiring Bill was the best decision I?ve ever made regarding people to do work in my house. Over the
years, I?ve had many contractors, handymen, plumbers, electricians, etc., and, overall he was the best individual I?ve worked with. One repair was of a Murphy bed. It turned out to be a very difficult, complex repair, and I?m not at all sure another handyman could have handled it. It appeared that a board at the top had simply come off. However, it turned out that there were multiple problems. If Bill had not repaired it fully, it would have almost certainly come down on someone?s head. The bed is locked to the
wall in its upright position by two catches. It turned out that only one catch was actually holding the bed. In addition, the original builder has held everything together with small brads, which Bill replaced with screws. Bill also installed a clothing rack, a towel
dispenser, and other things, repaired soffits, and did some painting.
His price was reasonable, he did an absolutely outstanding job, and I would hire him again in a minute. I can give Bill Smith my highest recommendation, without hesitation. I hope he will be chosen for the Page of Happiness and given the smile. In
addition, I hope he soon qualifies for the Super Service Award. &n
"I am so sorry this occured and take full responsibility. Please know, and I should probably add this note in my Angie's List profile, for the past few months I have been having difficulty receiving some but not all email through my primary email service provider with who/whom I have a 5yr contract. I've tried resolving this with the provider to no avail and have been redirecting folks to my gmail acct at [email protected]. I was also out of the country for most of August and erroneously failed to leave a vacation message on my voice mail greeting even though I did with my email. At any rate I do apologize for the inconvenience and frustration and know the ultimate responsibility rests on my shouders. As Harry Truman acknowledged "the buck stops here!"."
We were so satisfied with his work that we are preparing to have him convert a darkroom in our house to a den.
We highly recommend him.
P.S. I have updated my initial bad report on Bill because he did not return my calls or email after 3 weeks. It turned out there was a glitch with his email and he did not get the email I sent. He was also out of town for 3 weeks and did not get my voice mail message until he returned. He did call me as soon as he returned and got my voice mail message; he apologized and we worked through my misunderstanding and we scheduled a day for my work to be done. And I'm so glad we did!
"I am so glad we were able to reconcile this over the phone last week. I hope to have my email issues rectified with my service provider soon and will never ever again forget to leave the country without a vacation greeting on my voice mail account. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and frustration and look forward to working with you next month."
