Don Hoffacker’s Air Conditioning & Heating

Choosing an HVAC service provider is tough work--that's why we rely upon the reviews we find here on Angie's List. After reviewing the many A rated reviews, we contacted Don Hoffacker's to schedule an estimate for installing a complete AC system from scratch. The appointment was made for several days out, due to the fact that this is the busy season, which we understood. My partner stayed home from work on the scheduled date of the appointment only to receive a call in the afternoon from the rep. scheduled to visit our home--stating that he didn't think that he would be able to make it (again, due to the fact that this was their busy time of year). We requested that he make every effort to come provide us with an estimate as we were eager to get the system installed before the season became "any busier." The rep was late for the appointment, but he kept true to his word and came anyway. He did, however, express many times that he didn't know if they would be able to do the work for us. It was perceived as though he was trying to talk us out of the sale, which we could hardly understand. If it was too busy for Don Hoffacker's company to provide us with an estimate and do the work for us, which we were ready to do, it would have saved everyone a lot of time by just telling us that they didn't want the type of job we had. We have a small colonial, 1400 square feet, with no existing system. The appointment was made for 4/19 and today (5/2) we do not have the estimate, nor do we expect it. We did think it was important to mention this experience, which seems so atypical to all the other glowing reports.

I have used them for years and I have never had any problems; they are very good and I will use them again in the future.

When we bought the house, the inspector told us we only had about 3 or 4 years left on the heat pump. With Hoffacker's regular service and minor tune ups, they have been able to keep it going for another 15 years! They provide a general maintenance service, for a reasonable fee. The new compressor, is energy efficient which has saved us about $1000. We are very happy with the services Hoffacker's provides, and will continue to use them in the future.

The guy that came to our home was working for the company for 20 years. He gave me a 5 year warranty from the company for no cost, and a lifetime warranty for the heat exchanger. I will be getting a Bryant Air Conditioning system. This is a wonderful company, but it is not that easy to get them because everyone wants them. They came to fix what they others messed up and there was no charge for that. I have not paid anything so far, and he said you don't give us any money until it is all finished. I will be using this company in the future for my HVAC work.

I called to get an estimate for an installation of an HVAC system in my 1920's home. I was told that they did not service my area, but I ask that they please double check as Angie's List stated that 15 of the reports were from customers located within 5 miles of my address. The receptionist's attitude was negative and she seemed irritated, but she did comply and asked one of the owners if they would come out to my place. They said that they would come out to give me an estimate and to see if the distance would be a problem, but would charge me a $96 travel charge. No problem, I understand. When I tried to schedule an actual time for them to come, the receptionist just keep making comments about how far it was and how long it would take a representative to get there. She wasn't outright rude, but her tone and was passive aggressive and made me feel like I was really putting them out. So I decided to go with someone else.

The rep inspected my system thoroughly and efficiently. He answered questions that I had. He also helped me to set my thermostat to automatically turn the heat up and down as needed. Based on his helpfulness and knowledge, I signed a maintenance contract with Don Hoffackers.

Technician was prompt and very personable and explained everything in terms I could understand (I am the opposite of handy). We also discussed other problems he discovered and in making recommendations i was impressed that he not only did not recommend the most expensive options; he indicated in several instances that he did not recommend that I purchase some of the additional services / add-ons because they were not needed. Also a big plus for me -- I was originally given an appointment for two days in the future. They called me back that same day and said they had found an opening for the following day if I wanted to take it (I had told them that not having A/C was something I considered a real emergency).

My Heat Pump is 14 years old and I was afraid they would tell me to replace the whole system. I didn't think it would be necessary as the "Aux" heat work, and it would run A/C, but not regular heat. After looking at it, he determined it was a oil heater that fried and 2 pounds of freon. He was very professional and thorough; he found the problem rather than just looking at 14 year old system and saying, "Yup, you need a new one -- $5000 please!" I highly recommend them.

In addition to diagnosing and repairing the problem, he provided excellent customer service. He took the time to explain why the leak was happening and what he'd do to fix it. I appreciated the time he spent explaining things and the great customer service he provided.

We were happy with them. I bought a contract in the spring and it gave us two visits, so there was no charge for this last visit. They were very professional and I felt comfortable having them in my home.

This company did a great job for me and I would recommend them to anyone. The service they provided was great and I would use them again. I have several projects coming up and will be using them again in the near future.

We needed to replace our home A/C unit and got quotes from several firms. Needless to say, with such an important appliance and considerable expense, we wanted to be sure we got a good unit and a good service provider. Hoffackers was highly recommended by our neighbors, but were around 10% higher than the other bids. But we were told by others it was worth it for their prompt service, attention to details, and longevity, so we selected them. And it was worth every penny! There was a minor tubing disconect (not their fault) inside the interior unit that was undetectable until a few days later when we found condensate water all around the unit and basement carpet. Alarmed, we called them and they responded instantly. They found the problem (an interior hose that had loosened in shipment) and corrected it right away. Then, they directly covered all costs associated with the remediation of the water, and followed up to confirm that everything was addressed to our satisfaction. It's one thing to have a service provider do well when things go right; it's when you have a problem that you learn who the REAL professionals are! We strongly endorse Hofffacker's group, and we will definitely continue to use them. They truly exemplify the adage that 'you get what you pay for', and they are worth it.

I called Don Hoffacker to get an estimate on installing a whole house humidifier on our home. On the day of the appointment, the technician, Richard, arrived 15 minutes early and left me a voicemail requesting my permission to come earlier. Because I was on a work call, at that time, I actually missed our appointment altogether. By then, a receptionist and Richard had left me several voice messages to notify me that Richard had been waiting for 20 minutes and had to move on to the next appointment. Feeling bad for missing our appointment, I called Don Hoffacker to reschedule. They were generous enough to provide me with another appointment later in the day. Richard showed up a few hours later and did not complain one bit for the earlier mishap on my part. He was also keen to notice that I didn't wear shoes around the house, and without any mention on my part, he decided to take off his shoes. He showed a lot of humility and respect in this little gesture, which I very much appreciated. I was in the midst of taking him upstairs to the 4th floor where the HVAC unit is located. He immediately stopped and said that he wouldn't be able to install the whole house humidifier. He notified me that there would be 4 gallon of water per hour going through the pump, so it would be very risky if it were to leak in a unit that is located in the 4th floor. He said that he tries to be in the customer's shoes. "What if it were my homes?" That is just downright refreshing to see honest individuals, like Richard, who put the needs of potential customers first. Don Hoffacker might not have made a dime off me that day, but they sure have convinced me to be a customer. I will surely call them again in the future. Thank you.

This company is simply excellent: Excellent people, excellent service,. We replaced the heating and AC system. Their advise and work was outstanding. Very few companies in the Washington DC area compare to this company. Highly recommended without any reservations. Kudos to Don Hoffacker and all his staff and technicians.

I rent out the house that the work was completed on. My tenant is a professional contractor and advised that they did a great job in installing the system and that their price was great as well.

Mike from Don Hoffacker's was kind enough to come out, even on a Sunday afternoon, to address an issue with our heating system. The problem was quickly diagnosed, and he was able to produce a required replacement part and make the repair right away. He spent about 30-40 minutes at our house -- and got everything in working order...before he "got out of our hair," as he put it. I had to remind him -- he was doing US a HUGE favor! System is performing now, and the house is once again heating properly. The cost of the visit/diagnostic exam was equal to the cost of the part and the labor...but you can't really expect much more when you request emergency response...on a Sunday to boot. So...expensive, but worth it. Plus -- Mike honored the current Angie's list coupon we produced...saving us an additional $20. Mike was fast, effective, professional, and fair. We will certainly use Don Hoffacker's again. Very good experience.

They were extremely punctual, professional and went an extra mile for my family. I have 3 furnaces in my home that were checked by a different company and unknowingly gave me false reports. After living in the home for 4 months I found out that two out of the three furnaces were dangerous and Don Hoffacker's team saw the condition of the furnaces and corrected it immediately. The first furnace was changed on October 2011. It was a 40 year old furnace located in the basement and the only way out to get the furnace out was up skinny winding stairs. They patiently took that beastly, old, rusty furnace apart and took it to the first floor in pieces. They put plastic wrap all over the carpeted stairs and walkway. They were so clean that I could not tell that they took a rusty furnace out of the house. The second furnace was changed on December 22nd. It was a special order furnace because of the small size. Another team came and they were just as professional, clean and good as the first team. They went through an extra mile by doing a quick check on the third furnace, just to make sure that my family is not in danger. What a service. Thank you...

It was a very good experience overall. Even though it was Christmas Eve, it only took about 45 minutes from our phone call to Hoffacker's to having a repair person (Richard) on site. Richard was great. He quickly diagnosed the problem and fixed it. He also took the time to explain what he was doing so we understood the nature of the problem and the repair. Further, he gave us guidance on how to pick out more optimal air filters for our furnace. He was professional, courteous and personable. We've used Hoffacker's before to install a new furnace and water heater, as well as for other maintenance tasks. We've been pleased with them in the past (before joining Angie's List)...and this experience was no different. I have no hesitation in recommending them.

The technician arrived on time, was very knowledgeable and professional, checked everything, found several issues and fixed them on the spot. Our house feels much warmer already due to improved air flow, optimized heat pump blower fan operation, and keeping the garage door closed.

We've been using them for at least 10 years. They are very responsive. They are fair business people who don't try to upsell us. I totally trust what they tell me, and I think that's really important. We love them. I would highly recommend them. We need to call them to come out for a checkup for our system.

Don Hoffacker's did an amazing job. Tim and Craig were the two technicians that came and were very professional. The install took two days (one for the system and the second for the zoning). On the first day they had the owner Don Hoffacker come as well. They were always on time and very friendly and answered all our questions. The system install was seamless. They always cleaned up after themselves and did a great job. They also took care of an insulation problem around the ductwork in the attic to fix a condensation problem in the summer. We were very happy with their service and would definitely recommend them to others.

They called to offer a free follow up, which I thought was very nice.

I have been using them for years. They provide excellent service from the estimate, installation to the follow up. 3 weeks after installation they come out to follow up and make sure everything is still working okay. I have had emergencies on the hottest days of summer that they come out same day to fix it. They have even come out on a Sunday before. Their prices are also very competitive.
