We were very happy. He came on time and when we originally called him on the phone he asked some questions of us to make sure he could fulfill his responsibilities for us, such as time frame and what not. He came out when he said he would and had a real nice faucet. He did a great job, cleaned up after himself and did the work rather quickly.

I wasn't sure what to expect from the experience. I saw great and not-so-great reviews from Angie's List and was a bit apprehensive. I called the main line and was disappointed when the receptionist told me they don't do estimates for this type of work and that it was $172/hr with a minimum of 1 hr work. I took the leap of faith and booked the app't for the next day. They arrived 15 min late (no big deal) but they were very professional, put on shoe covers and brought their own protective mat. I told them of the sink issue and the smelly toilet in the master bath. The master plumber said the toilet was loose so they used a new wax ring and tightened it and caulked the toilet. Then they snaked the sink and it was drained properly. They ran the water for awhile to make sure it was unclogged. Since they finished the work in 1/2 hr and there was a minimum of 1 hour, I asked them to look at the toilet in the powder room. Even though I had a plumber install it after my hardwood floor install, I wanted to make sure it was not going to cause problems down the line. He looked at it and said that the ring was not tightened, the wrong screws were used. It was a bigger job but he finished it after 1.25 hr. The breakdown of the cost was $260 for labor ($215 for the master plumber and $45 for his assistant). $35 one time snake fee, and the rest on parts including 4 wax rings ($40). I expected the cost to be pretty high as it usually is with tradespeople. My overall experience: they are the most professional tradesmen i've ever met. Courteous, clean and knowledgeable. It is completely worth the money for the experience. The vibe was expertise and professionalism and I would absolutely use them again and would recommend them. The only unexpected part of the service was the extra price for the helper ($45) but I know in the long run, they did things faster by having a second person on hand but I wish that I was prepared for that extra cost beforehand rather than see it on the final bill.
Description of Work: Originally we called to have the two sinks in the master bathroom unclogged but they also tightened two toilets as well.

They said he would be here at 8 AM and at 8 AM the doorbell rang. He looked at everything that I needed done and stared to work. Within 2 1/2 hours he had completed the work, cleaned up and was out the door. My only negative comment is that when I called I told them I needed 2 bathrooms caulked. This meant removing the old caulk and adding new. When he arrived he told me it would take a half a day to do the 2 bathrooms, and he had already been scheduled at another customer at 10 AM. He would have stayed and handled if I had requested it but I was a bit annoyed that they didn't tell me it was a 4 hour job, and didn't allocate enough time for him to do the work. As it turns out I wouldn't have had him do it anyhow as they charge by the hour and since he didn't bring an assistant to caulk the 2 bathrooms would have been in excess of $650, which is way more than I would pay.

They should up on time and got to work right away. I actually got the same service person I had used before in a different house. He did an excellent job and was very informative as to why the problem happened and what he was doing to fix it. Both times I had an excellent experience with the service provided and I know what the problem was and how it was addressed. No mumbo jumbo which I like when something goes wrong with something as important as the plumbing. Will definitely use them again and they had a coupon :)

They were excellent. They came out shortly after we purchased the big deal for them. There were no extra charges. We had so many different things going on between the home and repairs. It's all we needed done. It was great. That was the first time we've used them. They just came just as we needed. We had a lot of trouble getting a hold of the plumber. I would use them in the future.

Stang Plumbing was fine. He came out, he was quick. He fixed the problem and he was very professional. There were other charges. He had to buy the parts for the toilet. It was my first time using them. Their services were fine. I thought that the cost above the discount might have been a surprise, but it was not terribly high.

I knew this would not be a very cheap job, but the cost of labor was excessive. Nine hundred thirty three dollars and fifty cents of the cost was just for the labor, for four and a half hours of labor. There were two people. One received $731.00 and another received $202 dollars. They did not give me any sort of a discount for being a senior, and told me I needed some sort of a card. I paid 172 dollars an hour for one man, and 140 for another. These people are extremely expensive, and if you hire them, your labor is going to cost more than your materials. The young man who came out was very nice, and I have no problems with the quality of their work, but this is just a very high price to pay. They were polite and clean, but I am just shocked by the price. Update: I gave them a call and the manager discussed the problem with me. He told me that he had gone over the prices ahead of time and so didn't think I should be surprised. However, he told me that he would like my business and would like me to call on them again. In light of this, he agreed to send me a check for $200 to help keep me a satisfied customer. The cost still seems excessive to me, but I appreciate that he was willing to work with me.
Description of Work: They worked on three bathrooms and changed the faucets and drains in all the sinks. They also changed one shower hose. This was a total of four faucets per bathroom – two sinks per bathroom and one hot and one cold faucet per sink.

Called The Stang Plumbing to fix bathroom sink leak. It cost $539.50. Their serviceman did unauthorized work asked by the tenant on toilet. Interesting enough the toilet overflow hour after he left. He was very pleasant and prompt. Had to call them back. Did not assume responsibility instead I was told the sewer line was blocked. Suggested they run camera. I authorized and it was done for $395.85. A video Cd was provided, however, did not locate the depth or the location of the break. The owner himself showed up to provide estimate to fix the broken sewer line. He told me that there was no way of knowing how far and how deep the break was and he would estimate a fixed price to dig are replace up to 20 ft .of line plus some work inside the house. Seeing what they did and the cost I lost complete confidence and felt the Stang Plumbing considered me as a cash spring. I will not use them ever again

Everything started well but then the original plumber assigned to work at my house became ill and could not continue. Overall I believe the plumbing installed in my home is of good quality. My general contractor said that it is and I have the highest regard for his professional opinion. The new plumber assigned to my house did not know the plumbing regulations for the city of Frederick. Obviously the owner of Stang did not know they were different from the regulations in Montgomery County either. They ended up charging me more than seven hundred dollars because the faucets I supplied to them did not meet the requirements of the City of Frederick and they had to be removed and new ones installed. This was labor cost only, NOT materials. The owner of Stang told me that the plumbing inspector explained to him that as long as I had the original boxes that the faucets came in with the correct codes/numbers on the boxes they could install my faucets. I showed him the boxes that I had and he chose to have his men install them. In all fairness I have to say that he did tell me he had a concern about one of the faucet sets I purchased on the internet from California which was not clearly marked with a code. I went to the web site and printed the company disclaimer stating that this faucet set more than met the lead-free laws in California. I had been told that California was as stringent or even more stringent than Maryland by Mr. Hershberger, the owner of Stang. The plumbing inspector would not allow any of the faucets to pass inspection and they had to be removed. I do think I should have been charged for the removal of the kitchen faucet set but I don't think it was fair that I was charged for all of the others. In addition to this the inspector made Stang move two of my sinks four inches away from the wall. Stang charged me for this too but they did removed those charges after I complained. The walls were damaged when the sinks were moved and my contractor had to repair this damage. The bookkeeper at Stang obviously did not understand how a 203k loan works. With this kind of loan the general contractor agrees to pay the subcontractors and then gets reimbursed from HUD over several draws. The job began in January. Dawn the bookkeeper contacted me frequently through emails and the US mail and by phone as the work was being completed. In April she contacted me to ask when I planned to pay them the last twent four hundred dollars. They had already been paid most of what was owed and needed to wait until HUD released the final payment. I received a call from John and had to explain to him that the home owner has no control of the money during a 203k renovation and that each check we received was signed over to the contractor who then paid the subs. I did owe Stang a few extras for things like a garbage disposal and for snaking the toilet when a rag had been flushed down as well as the charges for removing the faucets etc when they did not pass inspection. I made sure Stang was paid for those things before the final draw. I am happy to report that Stang has been paid in full. Although I have no reason to believe that the actual plumbing work they did for me is not of good quality the customer service from the billing department and the professional guidance I received from them during my renovation leaves much to be desired. My perception of this experience was that they really didn't care about me or my job. Although John was always polite when he spoke with me and he was apologetic about what happened with the plumbing inspection I feel like I was taken advantage by Stang because of the mistakes their employees made when they did not follow the regulations of the City of Frederick. I told John that I do not think it is fair the way I was treated by his company. I guess if you asked Stang to do work for you in Montgomery County you might not have as negative an experience as I did. Also now that they have had to deal with the plumbing inspector in Frederick and have learned the hard way on my job perhaps they would not make the same mistakes again. A representative from Stang will probably say this whole thing was my fault. I have noticed they do this when anyone describes a negative experience they have with this company on Angies List. All I have to say to that is the following. I am an inexperienced new home owner and I have never dealt with a plumbing contractor before in my life. I looked to this company for guidance. They earned a good chunk of money from me and they never once thanked me for my business. I did not yell at them for any of the mistakes they made and I guess this gave them the impression that they could blame all of the problems with this job on me or the plumbing inspector. The last thing that I have to say is that the plumbers who worked in my house never cleaned up after themselves. They left all of the mess they made in the basement when they installed plumbing or did any work for me to clean up. I did not have this problem with the other subcontractors who worked in my house.
Description of Work: My general contractor used Stang Plumbing for a major renovation of my home because he has had many good experiences with this company. This was a 203k project. We gutted the kitchen and an existing bathroom and then added another 1.5 baths to the home so this was a fairly large job. All of the existing plumbing was updated. They also installed a garbage disposal and hooked up a water line to the refrigerator.

Called Stang in late March to check out a broken toilet. I assumed the drain was clogged and would need to be snaked. After an initial visit from Stang to snake the toilet, and $187 later, it appeared to work fine. We flushed several times (while the plumber was there) and it drained quickly and completely. That weekend ? just a couple days later ? the toilet stopped working again. We called Stang immediately and they explained that we would be charged the ?weekend rate" (read: exorbitantly expensive rate) just to make a visit. We were disappointed, but we decided we could wait before we fixed the toilet. We were dealing with a death in the immediate family, so this wasn?t a top priority at the time anyways. We waited a week or two before calling Stang again. On 4/22, they snaked the same toilet, but this time the plumber discovered roots in the drain and suggested that we would need a different auger ? something called a ?1500? ? to completely clear the pipe of roots. Why roots weren?t discovered on the first visit, I have no idea. These were thick, mature roots and clearly did not grow into the pipe in a couple of weeks. That ?1500? auger would cost an additional several hundred dollars and another visit. That would be the third visit, but who?s counting? This appointment *only* set us back $172. Toilet still not working. Daunted, we called Stang a few days later about possibly adjusting the bill ? either bill, since roots weren?t discovered on the first visit and the second visit left us with the same broken toilet. We were quickly connected with John, Stang?s ?master? plumber. It was immediately clear where he stood: no adjustments would be made to either bill. Instead, John referenced the fine print on the back of Stang?s invoice which does state, "caulking, augering/snaking of drain lines, broken drain lines or lines blocked with roots have no warranty." I explained from my perspective this wasn?t a warranty issue since roots (the real problem) weren?t actually discovered/cleared on the first visit. That is, if the roots were correctly identified as the culprit the first time around, we would have gladly ponied up the money for that ?1500? auger. John likened the work of a plumber to that of an auto mechanic. A pretty apt comparison, I thought. John asked, and I?m paraphrasing here, if I would expect my mechanic to only bill me once if I needed to bring my car in multiple times for the same issue? Well, yes, I would! Perhaps I?m in the minority here, but I would expect my mechanic to identify the problem on the first pass, correct the problem for free if they do make a mistake in ID?ing the issue the first time, or, at the very least, offer me a credit for work performed towards the work needed to completely fix the real, underlying problem. But then again, I have a great mechanic. (Plug: check out Tony?s in Rockville, MD for all your auto/auto-body needs!) So, two visits by Stang and $359 later, we still have a broken toilet. BUT, the knowledge that we have a much larger issue on our hands is very comforting. At least I can accurately identify the problem to the next plumber. The lesson? Go with one of the other plumbing outfits in the DC area - they'll work harder for your business and ensure you leave a HAPPY, SATISFIED customer. Also, take the reviews on Angie?s List with a grain of salt ? we only called Stang because of their seemingly good rating on Angie?s List. There are several other plumbers in the area with better ratings (and more of them!) Full disclosure: I withheld payment for the second visit hoping Stang would let the bill slide after they learned of our disappointment and frustration with their service, but that turned out to be wishful thinking. Stang called and threatened to send the bill to collections and stated, ?the law will side with us.? I mailed payment and wrote this review immediately after they cashed the check.

Response from Stang Plumbing
Let’s begin by clarifying what exactly happened here. The initial call and visit (dated March 25, 2013) was for a “clogged up toilet”, not a “broken toilet”. Indeed the line was cleared using an auger. On the ticket that the customer signed, we noted that the toilet “flushed 10 times with no further back-up”. We were called back to return on April 22 (nearly a month later) because the toilet was backing up again. On this call the technician noted that that he “pulled back roots – need to have (larger drain clearing machine) used, told owner may want to replace sewer…..no warranty on ‘closet auger’, owner said she could not pay call at this time, she will make payment – pay within ’10 days’ .” This ticket is signed by the customer as well. If you have ever had drain clearing performed (called “snaking” because the machine are usually called “snakes”), you are likely aware of a few things here. First is that with drain clearing, you are paying for a process, not a result. Causal factors can and frequently do morph and reappear after being cleared the first time. For example – the snake machine will punch through a blockage (roots for example), then as paper, grease, or whatever starts to collect again on that restriction the line backs up again. Grease behaves similarly. Of note in this case is that invasive roots were ultimately found to be the culprit from a compromise in the sewer line. Rather than use the largest, most expensive machines first, we use (and charge for) the appropriate tool for the job. Once a closet auger clears a stoppage there is not likely any further good a large (much more expensive) machine is going to accomplish unless or until the drain backs up again. We do have some competitors that will simply charge you three times our price, guarantee the clearing, and know that mathematically 95% of the customers are dramatically overpaying and the other 5% will require some re-visits under warranty. If you look at what we charged to go to this customer’s house (under $360 combined for two separate visits) and compare that to any drain clearing you have ever had done, we think you’ll agree that we are more than reasonable. The client believes we should have found the roots the first time, but the same auger was used both times… indicating that they weren’t likely as grown into the line the first time or in a different place. Also, clearing roots doesn’t mean they will come back up with the auger – they are as likely to go down the line with the rest of the water and backed up debris. Also, once the line is clear the first time, there’s not much more you can do preventively without great additional expense. As this customer writes, we pointed to the disclaimer on the ticket she signed proclaiming no warranty on this type of work for the exact reasons stated above….it is simply not in our control and too difficult to predict to promise a fair flat price unless we charge such a high price that we’d be covered for most possible outcomes. The customer here inaccurately paraphrases a conversation with us that referenced an auto mechanic example. What we performed was akin to “troubleshooting” at an auto mechanic. You will usually pay for that kind of work by the hour (i.e. paying for a process, not a result). This is materially different from having a known problem with known parameters repaired, then having that repair fail within a warranty period. We did not incorrectly identify the problem, nor did we even repair anything. We cleared a drain line and (to the signed agreement of the customer) vertified that the toilet functioned properly when we left. To our knowledge, at no time was the toilet “broken” as the customer indicates here. She referenced a faulty flapper valve during one of the conversations we had, but it obviously functioned properly at the conclusion of our visit (again, evidenced by our writing such on the ticket and she signing that ticket). For that matter, a faulty flapper valve would have absolutely nothing to do with a back-up in the drain line. We would be happy to provide a faxed or electronic copy of all of the relevant documents, with our service tickets, notes, and the customer’s signatures. Just give us a call or an email and we will happily forward all the documents to any Angie’s List member that requests them.

One month ago, I called Stang to schedule an in home estimate for a new gas hot water heater. I have a 13 year old Power Vent 75 gallon gas hot water heater which I want to replace now before I start to have problems. The office manager attempted to give me an estimate on the phone, stating: "We do not do in home visits.". I explained I lived in a condo and my situation was unique. My model number, etc were all on file. I requested to speak with one of the estimators. I spoke to Jay and reviewed all the specific details with him. I offered to pay for an in home estimate. Jay said he needed to gather information and call me back. I wanted 1 week with no return call. I called the office again and spoke with Jay for the 2nd time. Jay said: "Refresh my memory. I will call you back.". I waited another week and called Jay a 3rd time. Jay said: "I will call you back by the end of the day." It has been 2 weeks and still no response. (6-22-13).

We had water leaking into our kitchen from an upstairs bathroom. We appreciate the prompt service and that the issue was fixed quickly. However, the plumber initially looked at the leak and decided it was due to a faulty/leaking shower door and did not cut open the sheet rock ceiling in the kitchen to check for leaks from the pipes. After I instructed him to do so, the plumber found two leaks in the pipes and fixed it. That's the only reason we gave the quality grade of a "B". Otherwise, the service was very good.

Arrived on time and was careful with the carpets. Fixed the drip and even got a little piece of debris from the back of the piping. Explained what had happened and what was up with the older pipes in my house. Really took the time to check to make sure the problem was fixed and how to properly drain the risers when we were finished using the shower. I would recommend them. They also returned my phone call promptly the next morning which was great.

Stang was very easy to work with. The responsiveness to get an initial estimate was very good--they sent out an estimator who clearly described all of the work to be completed, went over alternative approaches and submitted a professional written estimate. The office staff were very helpful in scheduling the work, even when I had to reschedule at the last minute. The plumbers were punctual and got the work done quickly over two work days, leaving time for official inspection. Stang coordinated the permit and rough/final inspections. Overall I was very pleased with Stang and would recommend them. Of five estimates I received they were one of the two highest in cost but I feel their clear explanations of every aspect of the job justified their cost., not to mention the peace of mind.
