Response from MARYLAND CLOCK CO
Regarding this review: On January 22,2021 I called this person with a FREE price quote to advise cost of 3 missing weights, and the need of a complete overhaul on a simple grandfather clock approximately 40 years old. Nearly half of the price was parts that were missing. This is a routine call I make daily. As I attempted to discuss what was needed, this Man became irate, rude, belligerent and disrespectful and said he didn’t want any work done. I then asked him to pick up the clock ASAP .There was no charge and no work performed. Not one penny was charged for my time. I also asked he not act that way in person in the store. Sure enough several hours later He came to pick up the clock and once again became verbally abusive and disrespectful. Because of his rant I was concerned for my safety and that of our staff.. I asked him to leave, placed his clock outside and he continued to yell and rant. It’s a shame people can use Angie’s list and other social media to tarnish a business reputation for a simple price quote.

Had a house visit to fix a hammer in my antique (1800s) grandfather clock. I paid $225 for a 30 minute visit and I am very dissatisfied with the result. The repairman did not replace the hammer, he just "fixed" it by using a match to burn off the tip of the leather hammer. The resulting tone is completely different (shorter, harsher, somewhat metallic) than the rest of the much softer tones. The repairmen insisted that it is "perfect", only to end increasingly uncomfortable conversation with a comment to his helper "you see what I told you about house visits. It is always like that with women." Not only is such a sexist comment completely unprofessional, it also points out to a history of dissatisfied clients. Well sir, you are the common denominator. Will not use this service again.

Response from MARYLAND CLOCK CO
This response is from Mr. Graham who took this call along with his apprentice Noah. His response: #1 -"I never said those words!" To put quotations around sentences that were never said is both legally and morally wrong. What I said to my apprentice was "This is why LIMITED service calls can lead to problems "This was a comment made between myself and my apprentice during a teaching moment. I believe the misunderstanding may have been the word limited, which I guess sounds like women when: A) This person spoke very broken English B) Everyone was speaking with masks. #2- The total charge of $225.00 reflects a repair charge of $60.00. The remainder of the charge is for a house call $165.00. Total time involving this person was 2.5 to 3 hours for 2 men. The total is correct and the receipt reflects charges. #3- I have had the privilege of going to over 20,000 house calls in over 51 years for floor clocks. I have met many wonderful people. This person was not one of them. #4-Maryland Clock Company is a WOMEN owned small business.

Not a pleasant experience. Should not have been charged for $20 labor.
Description of Work: Simple quartz battery chime replacement on wall clock. Put new chime in without demonstrating first how it sounded. Returned a day later after it was picked up and had to stand my ground that I wanted a refund of the part used because it did not perform well. It had real low volume and sounded tinny. Not something to be proud of hanging on your wall. She reluctantly did it but she would not agree to refund the $20 labor charge. When I brought the clock in, it kept perfect time but the chime did not work. She removed the new chime and gave me back a clock without putting in the old part that worked. She rooted through the trash to find it but could not find the clock hands. I left with a clock that had no guts! The owner was very rude. She said that I took too much of her time. She said I must have a hearing problem because she said the sound was too loud. She couldn't process the refund back on my credit card and wrote me a check. Instead of handing my credit card back to me, she threw it on the counter. I took my clock elsewhere and was able to get it repaired without paying upfront as she required. Definitely would not recommend this place.

Mr. [Member Name Removed], So glad to have the chance to respond to your comments. I want everyone to know this complaint is over $20.00. Again I am taking time for 20.00 dollars in labor. Mr [Member Name Removed] brought a Chinese made battery powered regulator wall clock to me for repair 5 days ago. The old movement in it is obsolete and the chime didn't work. I asked if he wanted it to play westminster chimes as it did before. His response was yes (it was a gift to his Son) I showed him the replacement unit that would fit the case and sound the best. He agreed on the movement after listening to it and demonstrating it in front of him at the counter. All was good. He pre paid the repair at the counter. A few days later we called to say repair was complete. He and his wife came to pick up the repair and were very sweet. Two days later they came back and said the pendulum was knocking on the side of the case. At the counter I replaced the bob to a smaller one and said here you go, problem solved. Then he said he didn't like the sound of the chimes. I asked what he wanted me to do?? He liked the chimes when he purchased the movement days earlier. He pulled out his cell phone and said it doesn't sound like my other clock. I explained that he wasn't comparing apples to apples. It was a different movement and wouldn't fit in this case. He said "keep the 20.00 labor" I want you to take out the movement and refund the price of movement. In Front of him and his wife I took out movement and handed him his clock. It is true that I couldn't get a refund to go through on my terminal, so I asked if I could refund with a check. I am insulted by your dishonesty. I did a perfect job on an inexpensive particle board schoolhouse wall clock. It looked and sounded great. As for your comment that you wouldn't use our services again....Thank you! I would decline to ever work for you again also. Funny, a gentleman picked up an exact movement job before yours and asked if he could give me a hug. His wife would be so happy having her chimes back. Mr [Member Name Removed], with a combined 90 years of clock shop experience, my husband and I are shocked that you're 20.00 job warrants this response. Odd how we can restore priceless family heirlooms, 246 year old tall clocks, mechanical chime clocks,Antique American, German, French,Dutch, Swiss antiques and all modern Grandfather, Grandmother, Cuckoo Clocks and never hear anything but compliments. With the skill we have as clockmakers, we do people favors doing battery clock repairs.(thus the 20.00) I was not happy with you, my customer. (You took about 75 minutes of my life). That is a true statement. For $20.00 and grief...... People should not go back on their word. The work was done perfectly and on time. You proceeded the work by payment. P.S. I did dig through my trash can for you. I found your broken movement and I asked if you really wanted me to dig again for the old hands to put back on a broken movement. You said NO let's leave Linda....... I would have. I have used a lot of other places and I always come back to him. He is knowledgeable and is able to give you information on the clocks that I bring in. He guarantees his work and honors his warranty. I am frugal with my money and feel that his work is worth the money.
