Certified Roofing

It had been raining non-stop. I was afraid that the roof project could be delayed. Certified Inc was able to finish the job according to the contract. The entire roof was replaced on time.

James was great with the no-pressure sales and we liked his approach. We appreciated all of the information he provided and that he waited for us to contact him when we were ready to proceed with the purchase/ installation. The only real issue we had with this company was a lack of communication. 1. We received a call informing us that our gutters were to be installed on a certain date. This was a bit confusing as we had purchased both roof and gutters. A call to the company confirmed that indeed we would be receiving the roof installation date call soon, the scheduler was calling the gutter installations first then the roofs... seems a bit backwards to us. 2. One day prior to the date of installation a large flatbed truck arrived at our house with no prior notice and had to make adjustments to leave the roofing materials on our lawn. Apparently they normally leave the materials right on the roof. This is interesting given the fact that we had not be notified, what if no one was home when they arrived? Would they have just dropped all the materials on our lawn? Materials included spray paint, sealant, shingles, etc. We live in DC. There is no guarantee that all of the excess materials would not have been stolen right off our lawn had we not been home. 3. The date of the install as 9 am came and went we called into the office at Certified to ask if the installation was in fact occurring that day. There was rain in the forecast for the following day so we suspected they may have rescheduled the install. We were told the crew was finishing another job and would arrive shortly. When no one showed up we called back and were eventually informed that they had problems with the truck and would reschedule the installation. Two days passed - two rainy days- The third morning around 930am workers showed up at our house and informed us they were in contact with the office as they were not sure they'd actually be installing that day - again due to rain- Another hour passed and eventually, without any notification they started the work. 4. The last communication issue we've had was simply that it would have been nice to have someone from Certified Inc come out and inspect the work, ensure that the area was clean and satisfactory before asking for payment. It's just nice to know sometimes that someone is there to follow up. Overall the installation went well, the crews for both the roof and gutter installations were great and the entire roof was finished in 2 days. The crews cleaned up before they left, but it's never perfect so we've run our own magnet a few times to pick up the many nails left behind and are still gathering up a few random pieces of tar paper and shingles off our lawn and our neighbors lawns. If I was to give the company advice, I'd tell them to work on the communication, add a follow-up component and be sure to advise homeowners to protect any plants or other items near the house that might get damaged from falling shingles etc. In the end we only lost a lilac bush (it should spring back next year:) ) and a walkway light.

On Day 1 the workers from Certified arrived early and stayed long hours to remove all the siding (it wasn't expected we would have two layers), made repairs, and began to install the siding, removing (with an added crew) the big piles of all the debris that had come off the house at the end of the day. On Day 2 they completed installing the new siding -- which looks GREAT -- and cleaned up. On Day 3 another crew came to install the gutters. In each case the workers worked hard and steadily, knew what they were doing, were pleasant and helpful, and left the yard clean. We were not charged extra for the unexpected removal of an extra layer of siding, and there weren't any other unexpected charges. The new siding looks clean, neat, bright, nicely installed as far as we can see, and we are very happy with the new look -- it has inspired us to do some follow-up painting and repair work! One of the things that we want to praise the Certified representative, James, for is the amount of up-front time and information that he provided to us. We felt like we knew exactly what we were getting, and he worked with us to give us what we feel was a very good price. We took a few other bids and didn't get nearly as much information up front from the other folks who gave us bids. It gave us a lot of confidence in the company's honesty and attention to detail. One other company gave us a quote for Certainteed siding but did not mention that Certainteed has several grades of siding, so we did not know which grade the company intended to install. We also got printed information from James (in addition to the contract right away), not all _verbal_ information about what would be done and provided. This was helpful in terms of us (husband and wife) talking to each other and again, reassuring to us we knew what we would be getting. Finally, when we had questions, we were able to talk with James directly by phone. Altogether, ours was a positive, stress-free, and rewarding experience in terms of both process and final result! We have a particularly touchy situation because we own a row house in the Logan Circle area and needed to access our neighbor's property to install the shingles. The neighbors were in a hurry to get the work completed because they needed to work on their garden and watering system. James (Certified) moved heaven and earth to get the shingles ordered and delivered to the work site and to arranged to have the work started and completed in one day. The crew showed up, did the work, and left the work site clean. They even removed and took away the plywood protection that we had constructed by another contractor to shield the neighbor's plants. If you want to know if we'd use Certified again: In a couple of weeks when they will begin the next phase of the job which is installing James Hardie Smooth Panel siding to the south and east sides of our house. I need to say a few words about James Pingleton: Responsive. Professional. Nice guy. (I guess that's four.)

New roof is great! The crew was incredible. Man, these guys worked hard. They removed at least 5 old layers of roofing material to get to wood. Lots of rotted wood that needed to be replaced. They also preserved the vintage skylight. I was impressed with their attention to all these details. Highly recommend this company.

James from Certified was very prompt in coming to my home and giving me an estimate of the job to be done.. Compared to others his estimate was fair. I decided to use Cerified due to all the positive reviews on Angies List. Due to a few days of rain, the job was postponed for a few days. Javier was the project manager and always on site. He responded immeditaely to all my questions. Javier was always pleaseant and happy on the job. He made sure the job was done perfectly and in a timely manner. The new skylight looks beautiful and little dust was evident in the replacement. The office at Certified also is very helpful. They are very pleasant to talk to about the job and the invoice. This is a very upfront, professional company. I would recommend them highly to anyone who want a roof done right! The roof looks amazing!

They were at work at 7am everyday and started work immediately. The crew was very professional and the work was done beautifully.

This is our 3rd flat roof project with Certified Inc. We are very satisfied and looking forward to working with them again. James Pingleton is a great project manager - very responsive (if there is an issue responds in no time), eager to resolve any issue and went beyond to meet our deadlines. He is also very fast to provide estimate and finalize the contract. Juan Carlos and his crew worked hard and with great mastery. If Juan Carlos's crew is assigned to my project I am confident in the result. Juan Carlos did all our three roofs (prior projects - Feb 2013 & Nov 2015) and we had no issues to date. Will recommend Certified Inc to anyone who looks for flat roof contractor.

Certified Inc. did an excellent job--they came out quickly when we discovered a leak and came out within a few days after that to do the full roof replacement for us. They were extremely responsive to all of our requests and the roof, turret, and skylights look wonderful. James and Juan Carlos were very professional and work extremely hard (early morning and late into the evening if needed). I highly recommend Certified.

The vendor responded very quickly to my request for an estimate. Their estimate was comprehensive and sufficiently detailed for me to make a valid comparison with three other estimates I received. Price was reasonable and proved to be the best value of all those I received. Warranty provided with the new roof was equal to or better than all others proposed. After I accepted their proposal, and scheduled my job, the front office kept me posted weekly on the status and assured me that my job was still "on" as scheduled. Their crew showed up exactly on time on the scheduled day. The crew chief went through list of work to be performed and the crew got right to work. It was obvious that the crew was highly trained and experienced. They worked very fast, but were very thorough. The crew chief had his crew very well organized and kept them "on task" throughout the job. He ensured they followed required safety procedures, and promptly corrected any violations. They laid out tarps on the ground to collect all the pieces of the old roof, and were careful to ensure that all trash was dropped only on the tarps. In addition, because my job was probably going to take two days, they only demo'ed as much of the old roof as they thought they could replace on the first day. This ensured that my entire house had a roof on it, in case it rained overnight (which it did)- a very smart move. All materials for the new roof were installed in accordance with manufacturer's specifications as far as I could tell. All felt and shingles were installed in straight lines, which the crew measured properly and set with chalk lines. Some of the wood sheathing needed to replaced, and the crew replaced it with new plywood. They found the outer edges of the sheathing that needed to be replaced, cut it out in even rectangular sections. Only the sheathing absolutely needed to be replaced, was replaced. The crew did an excellent job of sealing all new flashing around the chimney and new skylight (which they installed). When the job was finished, I had an attractive, well-installed roof that I am completely satisfied with. The crew spent a lot of time cleaning up, including blowing out my gutters, driveway and walkways. There was very little trash or few old nails to find after they were finished. I would definitely use this company again if I need another roof and I will recommend them to my friends.

The owner showed up on time to do the estimate, the price was competitive and the job was completed quickly and efficiently.

Roof replacement was excellent. Roofer didn't quite know what to do with the garage door and because they replaced the wood work on top the spring mechanism was affected. Wiring for the outside light was also affected by the wood work over the door and they did not initially rewrite it through the new wood work. After I expressed my concerns the crew came back and catered to everything I asked as much as possible. I had to hire a garage door technician in the end but that's understandable since I hired roofers not folks who knew about garage doors. Overall James and his crew were very responsive to all of my needs.

They were very professional and punctual. The sales rep was excellent, he worked with me and kept in constant communication which was very important to me. I was able to ask questions and get them answered. When the crew came to do the work, I asked him the same questions and he had no problem answering them again. The sales rep and the crew were exceptional. I had a great day! Highly please and would recommend them to anyone!

James was very thorough during the bidding process -- worked to balance our needs and budget. Job took longer than expected -- was quoted a 2-3 day project, ended up stretching a little more than a week, but partly an issue of weather. Juan took extra care to make sure the job was done right -- there were a few low spots on the flat roof that still held water after the replacement tapered flat roof was added, but they came back to fix after being made aware. Quality job overall, would recommend.

We had previously had repair work done on our roof about four years ago, that was expensive and short-lived. Whatever material they used did not last, and the roof surface was literally drying up and peeling away. When we discovered a leak coming through a light fixture in an infrequently used bedroom, we decided to completely replace the roof, and found Certified Inc. on Angie's List. We called the company based on the favorable reviews. James came to determine the scope of the work, and quoted us a firm price for the work. He was friendly, courteous and very professional, and we decided to hire them. We were especially impressed that they said NO money would be required until the job was finished to our satisfaction. It snowed between the day of the initial visit and the proposed beginning of the work, so the start date understandably slipped a few days. The job was estimated to take three days, and actually took five, but it was the most complete and thorough job we have ever seen. The work included replaced flashing around the skylights and chimneys, and around the complete perimeter of the roof. We have two HVAC package units on the roof, and they lifted and flashed around those as well. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks after they had completed the roof, we again discovered a leak in the same bedroom. There are six drains on the roof, and Juan, the crew chief, discovered that over the years, gaps (or, in some cases, gaps waiting to happen) had developed down in the drain where a steel pipe connects to a PVC pipe. He determined they they all needed to be caulked in order to avoid further leakage. Juan meticulously applied industrial caulking to the interior of each drain, even though he had to use his fingers to apply the caulk, because of the narrow width. I suppose, technically, this was not roof work, but Certified was determined to make us happy, regardless. We love the new roof, and are really glad we had it redone. Everyone we dealt with in the firm, from the office staff to the men on the job, went the extra mile to assure us that they would not leave until we were completely satisfied. I don't remember the last time we dealt with a firm that made our satisfaction such a priority. I recommend them without reservation.

Great work! They were able to complete everything within 1 day. Jody was especially great, promptly returning calls and answering all of my questions; very professional! Tom even stuck by the same estimate, despite the fact that it was over 2 years old! I'd highly recommend them for any roofing needs.

Had a good experience meeting with company rep (James Pingleton) and obtaining estimate. The roof estimate was higher than the others I obtained, but I was convinced that the higher quality materials and more robust warranty were worth the extra. We are replacing our roof now because we are purchasing rooftop solar panels, and knew that we would need a new roof before having the solar panels installed. One of the biggest factors in our decision to go with Certified was their existing partnership with a solar installation company (Solar Solution) that will enable us to maximize our tax savings on the overall job. Our minor issues (that lower our ratings from an "A" to a "B" in certain categories): --felt that the estimate paperwork was somewhat misleading - the upcharge to qualify for the 50 year warranty was buried, giving the initial impression that the estimate was lower than it actually was. --felt that the price for gutters and downspouts was on the high side. --although the crew did a good job of cleaning up afterward, they did run over our lawn in several places. Otherwise, the job went smoothly and we're happy with the end result.

Overall a great experience with this company. Quick response to a request for estimate. Great exchange of information when I asked questions. Quick scheduling to perform service. Expeditious installation.

Certified, Inc. replaced my roof. The process involved the following. I made an appointment with their representative, James Pingleton, who examined my roof and explained to me what had to be done. His description was detailed, he fully answered all of my questions, and he made several suggestions. Certified scheduled the job well in advance and the work crew arrived as scheduled. Javier Martinez, who was in charge of the work crew, kept me apprised of their progress, answered my questions and adjusted their work to meet my concerns (adjusted gutters). He was very professional and I have only good things to say about him and his crew. Overall, I recommend Certified, Inc. to anyone who is considering replacing their home roof.

The team is very professional and courteous. They did a great job installing the gutters, we didn't even know they were here, except that they were in our calendar. Very seamless! I would recommend them highly.

Timing on estimate off by several days, but owner proactively engaged to insure satisfaction.

Skylights were leaking cold air. Initial plan was to caulk skylights, but when workman on job inspected the skylights which were 30 years old, he determined that they were damaged and needed replacement (caulking would not fix air leaks). He took cell phone pictures to illustrate his point, checked with home office, returned to warehouse to get materials and replaced skylights within 2 hours. Very professional and at reasonable cost.

I have a flat/slant roof in the Historic District on Capitol Hill that needed to be replaced. In addition, I had peeling paint on the cornices of the Victorian front, indicating some sort of water leak coming through the brick or gutter (unacceptable), and I had a leak at the edge of my aging rooftop skylight (unacceptable). I want to ultimately add a roof deck, and the rafters in my house, built in 1872, were not of code width and placement, and the ceiling was sagging in one upper room, which probably would prevent me from getting a permit. I didn?t want to add a new roof now, and then have to go in and tear up part of the roof to solve the rafter problem in the attic at a later date. I interviewed three prominent roofing companies, and Certified, Inc., of Rockville was by far the best. I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs repair or replacement of any kind of roof in any of our DC regions. The cost ($14,900) was less than that of other companies, but that wasn?t the only (or even the main) reason that I chose them. (1) I chose Certified primarily because they gave me the best customer service of any contractor that I have worked with in either DC or Bethesda over the last 30 years (there have been quite a few). Their main customer service representative, James, carefully explained all the options to me and even gave me samples of the roofing materials (including those I might want to use on my roof deck). James immediately had all of Certified's licenses and insurance information forwarded to me (doesn?t always happen in other companies). He wrote up a clear and understandable contract so that I knew exactly what I was being charged for and exactly what I would get,. He walked me through all the details of what materials would be used and how the roofing would be put down, assessed and helped me plan for bringing the attic rafters up to code so that they would support the roof and roof deck properly, helped me plan for elevated side walls that would be necessary for the future roof deck (better to do it before the roof is redone, since the roofing material needs to connect on them), included new chimney caps and gutters for minimal charge, and helped me find a good contractor who could help replace the attic rafters and other needed construction. The new roof, new skylight, elevated sidewalls, repair of the leaking gutter on the front cornice, and re-shingling of the peaked cornice roof all were accomplished efficiently by a pleasant and tidy team of workmen in only a few days. James was in constant contact with me, checking every day on the progress and workmanship of what was being done, as well as providing a very valuable liason with the contractor who was redoing the upper room ceiling and rafters of the attic. James is absolutely honest and trustworthy. It is very difficult to find someone in whom you can trust and who will discuss and help with all of the myriad aspects of the home improvement project, stay in contact, make sure that the work is progressing correctly and, ultimately, that the customer is completely satisfied. I could not have accomplished this rather complicated ?roof job? without James? help. Without question, I would go back to this company immediately whenever I needed any kind of roof work done, and I would recommend them above all other companies for various types of home improvements that I have encountered in the Washington region (quite a few). I guarantee that you will have a good experience (a moderately rare event for the customer in the home improvement business). (2) The second reason that I chose Certified Inc. was because they had the best warranty (20 years) of any of the companies. (3) And, lastly, as indicated above, their cost was very reasonable, the best of the three companies that I interviewed.
