The workmanship on this job was top notch, there were several places where the wood flooring had to be cut carefully around intricate parts of the patio doors and it was so well done. The workman took care to choose pretty quarter sawn pieces for the most visible trim around the stairs. I was very impressed with the quality of the work.
This contractor was sub-contracted by the general contractor, so I never met him, though I did meet his brother on the day of the installation.  The brother came first to do some prep work while the contractor picked up the wood.  I left for work before the contractor arived with the wood.
There was a mix up between the GC and the contractor -- despite being assured by the GC that the board to be layed was going to be 3.25 inches wide, they put down 4 inches. I know that the cost of the custom 3.25 inch board is more than the 4, which is stock. Not sure if I paid for the custom board and ended getting stock, but this left me with a bad feeling.
Also, the contractor put the floor down on the very first day -- he did not leave it in my condo to acclimate.  I asked his brother why they were doing this and he said the wood would dry out too much if they left it -- after all it was winter and I live near the ocean so perhaps they wanted to preserve a higher moisture content.  (I asked about it because I had never before or since heard of anyone not acclimating the boards before putting them down.) Some of the boards do buckle now, though I learned from a new GC that this can happen even if the wood is acclimated.
But I did wonder if they hurried up and put the floor down without letting it acclimate so that I wouldn't see that it was the wrong width until after it was installed.
All this sounds like he should get a low rating, but again, the quality of the work was very good.

Considering the fact that the workspace they had to do the job was pretty large, I was highly impressed with the results. One thing I noticed that could have been a little better was the clean-up. Some wood dust was able to escape their notice but this in no way would stop us from using them again. They were very professional, answered all our questions before and after they worked and we are really impressed by the work they did.

HE WAS NICE AND PROFESSIONAL, AND SHOWED A GREAT DEAL OF KNOWLEDGE. 3 OF MY FRIENDS HIRED HIM AND ARE VERY HAPPY.
