Fine Home Carpentry is a family business and they're all nice guys. They're responsive and they did do a good job putting down the decking.
The main issue we had with them is that they put down a 10,000 dollar mahogany deck on a structure that was unsound and had rotten posts and railings. We had asked them at the start to tighten the posts and replace any rotten wood so that the railings would be stable, but we had the impression that they didn't want to spend the time doing that because they had another project on which they needed to get started. There was a lot headscratching and they didn't seem to know how to make the railings stronger. They ended up drilling some boards into the rubber roof of the garage, but it didnt really make a difference for stability. After they were done, the railings were even softer then before and one was so damaged it was leaning over without anyone pushing against it. We later tightened that ourselves.
Their estimate included staining the deck on both sides before putting it down, but when they started work, they said that was an error in the estimate and they would need more money if we wanted the wood stained. We had to buy the stain and pay extra for the painting. They also left lots of bootmarks on the finished deck because they didn't wipe off the excess stain as they should have. So we ended up sanding the deck and staining it ourselves to get rid of the marks.
