"MEMBERS -- WE DO NOT RECOGNIZE THIS PERSON AND DO NOT HAVE HER NAME IN OUR DATABASE. WE WILL BE ASKING ANGIE'S LIST TO REMOVE THIS REVIEW AS WE BELIEVE IT IS THE WRONG COMPANY."
Thank you, Constantine
"We are sorry to read this review. We worked closely with this member to ensure that she was completely satisfied with her project and upon completion she was. Yes, the crew did accidentally leave behind a pile in the back corner of the yard which once it was brought to our attention we quickly went out and removed. We certainly would not throw mulch over it as an attempt to disguise it. Additionally, there was no mis-judgement of time on this project and we did not leave things undone. The client was happy upon completion and in the days and weeks after. We did not perform maintenance on the plantings as we were not requested to. All installed shrubs come with a 1 year warranty to protect the client against any potential growing issue with the shrub. We were never notified of any issues with the plantings until this time. The choice of plantings were feasible for the locations and if not they would have failed within the year and would have been covered under warranty. Again, this client was very happy with our work through both of the projects that we completed and we were always available to answer any questions or concerns. We are unsure as to why this review has come in at this time without any communication with us."
Our priorities were to remove one mulch bed that was under the front porch against the siding of the house and replace it with stone (mulch against the siding of a wood-frame house is an invitation for termites!) and to remove some ornamental grasses because I'm allergic to them. We also wanted to replace some of the shrubs and plantings with lower-maintenance plants. John walked around the property with us and listened carefully. We told him we wanted to spend $2000-$5000 for the project.
He made some insightful comments: for example, I didn't like the rhododendrons and John told me I should think about keeping them because they're low maintenance and were due to bloom soon. He also had some nice ideas like (some day) replacing the wood deck with a stone patio. He was very respectful of our budget and didn't give us a hard sell. He said all we really needed in the near term was a clean-up of the property and some crushed stone under the porch. He did offer a design consultation to plan bigger improvements and we agreed to that.
It took about a week for the company to get back to us with an estimate but I was pleased to see it was $2500, including materials. There was no itemized cost breakdown but there was a description of work to be completed and it included nearly everything John and I had verbally discussed. There was one thing that slipped off the list: we had a little poison ivy by the back fence and getting rid of that wasn't on the list. We wrote email back asking to add that item but somehow it never got resolved. This is a minor point considering how the overall project turned out.
Another week went by and John's office called to schedule the work. I think my wife forgot to mention the poison ivy. They called on a Thursday and we scheduled the work for the following Monday, weather permitting. They also scheduled our design consultation for the same day. (There's a $500 fee for the design consultation, but it counts as credit toward installation of the new design.)
Monday was rainy and John's called us shortly after lunchtime to reschedule for Tuesday. Promptly at 7:30 Tuesday, John's four-man crew arrived and went straight to work. I was working from home and I saw these fellows through the windows all day. They were model employees: conscientious, friendly, professional. They worked quietly and diligently from 7:30 till 5:30 with a couple of breaks. They did a remarkably good job. They filled the bed of a small dump truck with all the weeds, hedge clippings, old mulch, and last year's leaves they removed. They left a spotless work site. I tipped them each $20 and they were quite grateful. In hindsight, I think they deserved more.
The garden looks great and our house is now safe from termites. The design consultation went well and we're looking forward to seeing the designer's ideas on paper.
All in all, this was a great experience and the start of a promising business relationship.
"This member is a current client and happy with our services. We strive to be a very professional company and will work with this clients issue to see why she has not viewed it to be so."
"This is an unfortunate review because it is simply not true. There was no delay on our part to install this project, The original meeting in March was for a complete redo of the property. The client decided that she did not want to do this at this time and would instead want to do a smaller portion of it which involved more planting and tree removal. We had to wait for the tree to be removed by another company which did not happen until May. This removal was was under the member's own time line as they received their own bids for this work and did not go through us. After the tree came down, the member wanted us to rethink our original plan because the area now looked different than she thought it would (email to me first week of May) We proceded to the re-design the project and re-presented it 2 weeks and let them know that we were ready to install (email 3rd week may). The client responded a week after that and said that they were on vacation and would get back to us later. When they did get back to the member's husband was now involved and had his own thoughts about the design and additional design work had to be done. The project was completed in June and in an email dated June 24th from the client she mentions that she is "pleased with how it looks". I don't understand why some members choose to mis-lead other members on this site. I would be happy to discuss any questions with regards to my company at anytime."
"Dear Members, We have no records of this individual and or job request. We believe she has the wrong company and is mistaking it with us. We provide free estimates and proposals for all jobs, big and small. I will be asking Angie's List to investigate and remove this posting. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, John"
Estimate was a little higher but I can set the clock for service - it's regular and consistent
The only minor complaint that I had was that I did call to point out a few areas in the yard that were missed on the first visit and hoped that they would clean on the second visit. Unfortunately, they didn't. I also would have liked to have seen more attention to detail around the shrubs. Overall, I was pleased with the work and plan on using their services again.
The raised-bed they installed is fine - but the soil they used to fill in the bed isn't great (low quality and filled with rocks) and needed a LOT of work before anything other than weeds would grow well...
All in all - they were very expensive for average work...we will not be using their services again...and have found another company that knows more about landscaping and plant care.
"Dear Members, This response is suspicious to me. I let you listen and decide. The project we did was for $4950.00 of which $2200. was materials and supplies and $2750.00 was labor. The project was completed on 6/27/2011. We initially met with the client on 6/8/11 to review the work she wanted done. From there we developed a plan and a budget for the work and provided a proposal. The proposed work was accepted and the install date of 6/27 was set. The work was completed and the client was extremely pleased with everything done. All of our planting materials were purchased from the largest Nursery in Winchester, MA and our soils and other materials were purchased from just as reputable providers locally. We use a 50/50 compost / loam mix when installing our plantings and it provides fantastic results. It is a little more expensive than straight loam but worth it in the end. On 10/1/11 (3 plus months after install) we received an email from our client. In it she mentioned "One of the shrubs that was installed...in July is not doing well. (one of the holly bushes)..the rest look fine. We treated them all the same.. but one might not make it.." The client asked for suggestions and asked about a warranty mentioning "I know some places do this - not sure about your supplier?" Our response to our client came 3 days later via email on 10/4/11 and we wrote "I hope you are doing well. Beth stopped by and looked at the holly. It is covered under warrenty so we will replace it. We would like to replace it in the spring instead of now if that works for you. Some of the stock at the nursery has been hanging around a bit longer than I would like and in the spring we will be gaurenteed new stock. We will follow up with you before we come out. We usually start planting towards the end of April depending on weather conditions. Let me know if you have any questions" The client agreed to this and responded on 4/16/12 "just a reminder that our 1/2 dead holly needs to be replaced this spring...if you have any questions - or need me to do anything before you replace the plant - just let me know. Thanks" As agreed the plant was replaced by us in May at no cost to the client. This is why the review is suspicious to me. There was never a mention of any other plants dieing or any other issues. Did the client not think that I keep and record all email communications with a client? The client was well aware of the 1 year guarantee and was getting 1 plant replaced under the warranty. Why wouldn't she have contacted us about the others? We have an open line of communication with our clients to address any potential issues. When this client had an issue with 1 shrub, we addressed it immediately and in an agreed upon time frame. Would she have preferred we given her a lesser quality shrub in October? Our mulch and loam is indisputably the highest quality around. Again, In April of 2012 when the client contacted 10 months after installation the only issue that existed was the agreed upong replacement of 1 shrub. We did well over 75 large planting installations last year. I am quite confident that our crews and management knows plenty about landscaping and plant care. Members - of Angies list may wonder why I take so much time responding to any negative reviews and the reason is that I care. I am always available to my clients or to anyone who has any concern about our work or our commitment to our clients. I welcome anyone who would like to discuss this particular situation or any other to reach me directly at [email protected]."
Our disappointment stems from the lawn that John?s Landscaping planted. We sodded part of the yard and hydroseeded the other. We followed their guidance on maintenance, including watering and fertilization. The hydroseeded lawn was taken over by weeds shortly after germinating. John?s Landscaping did aerate and overseed this part of the yard last fall. However, this part of the lawn was full of weeds again this summer.
The sod developed brown patches over the course of last summer. This spring, when our neighbors? lawns were green, ours was brown. It stayed that way well into June with some areas never completely recovering. John and his sod supplier looked at it on a
couple of occasions due to our continued urging and each time told us the sod was fine. Earlier this summer, John agreed to address the patchy spots but has since declined to deal with the problem areas.
"As my mother tells me "John, you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time....no matter how hard you try" Please judge for yourself on my website: This is completed photos of the stonework, planting and the grass that was installed. Unfortunately it was not maintained by us and instead was maintain by the client themselves. Although, it still looks good, any unhappiness they have with it is due to the maintenance done by them. This installation was exceptional. Just 2 days ago, 9/7/12, I sent a prospective client by this property to look at the work, and they immediately accepted our proposal. As you can see I also feature this install in my portfolio on my website. When we completed this installation the client was ecstatic and gave us rave reviews. Unfortunately, they chose not to use my company for regular maintenance and instead chose to do it themselves. We gave them advice and suggestions on how to maintain but we can never be sure of what was done and not done. They had some questions mid-summer after they had applied a fertilizer application. I visited and explained to them that it looked as if the fertilizer was improperly applied. I could see streaks in the lawn. I instructed them to continue watering and cut at a higher length which they did and the grass looked great again. Although they still questioned whether it was a fertilization issue or not. I offered to have the sod grower look at the lawn for any potential issues that I may have missed, I did this and he assured them that the sod looked good and was perfectly healthy. This past March 2012 they inquired as to why their lawn had not greened up when their neighbors had. I explained to them that with the new sod it would stay dormant longer than some other grasses and although the outside temperatures were warm the ground temperature was still cool and with time it will green up. They doubted this explanation so I offered to have the sod grower come out again to meet with them and discuss. We did this and they were given the same explanation. A few months ago they emailed me . ".....It has improved over time as the grower indicated earlier in the Spring." Again this season they did not use our service and I believe continued to fertilize on their own. Unfortunately, I can not control either the timing of their applications nor the manner in which they are done which therefore would effect any weed issues they had this season. I have responded promptly to any and all of their concerns. I have advised them that their issues are a result of poor maintenance and fertilization and NOT related to any installation work that was completed by us. I have not walked away from them nor declined to address any issues as I am still available to answer any questions or concerns that they have. I offered to supply a quote for overseeding again this fall if they would like, but they wanted it for free. I explained to them that correction of poor maintenance would not be my responsibility since we did not provide the maintenance. To this day, their property looks excellent. The grass included. Although, I have suggested to them many times to get a professional fertilization company so that the lawn could look as good as the day it was installed. Again, please judge for yourself - copy and paste this link from my website to view completed photos. We did all the stone work, planting and lawn work. I very much value the reputation of my company and therefore would be willing to answer any additional questions on this. Please feel free to email me at [email protected]. Thank you!"
"I personally met with our client on 9/7/12. Previously, at their request I had done a visit to the property to review the completed work. The issue of the shrub trimming stemmed from our client not realizing / remembering that they had renewed this service which they did prior to the season beginning. We had trimmed their shrubs last season as well. Although the client had renewed these services they were surprised when the work was done and they received a bill for the work. It is unfortunate that they are ridiculing the work that was completed only because they were surprised to get a bill for work that was requested and did not realize that they had renewed this service. It should be noted that because of them "not realizing" that this particular service was renewed I offered them a 20% courtesy discount. This discount had no reflection on the work done and was only a gesture to the client because they had not realized that this service was renewed. All general maintenance services are renewed in the same manner and this client has not had any other issues with the other services that were renewed through that process. Regarding the work completed. Our crew did an excellent job working with extremely overgrown shrubbery. I met with the client and explained the issue that he was concerned about. The shrubs are extremely overgrown and multiple shrubs have grown into large clumps of each other. The client acknowledged that the landscape is over grown and fully understood the limits of trimming overgrown shrubbery when we met. The client also had a comment about a shrub that was trimmed so that it was not touching the house and I explained to him that that was the proper trim for that shrub and that you really don't want your shrubbery touching the house and the client understood when we met. The front yard is just a small portion of all the trimming done on the property and the client made no mention of any issues with any of the other areas on the property that were trimmed because they were all done very well. It is unfortunate that the client is making these comments only because they "did not realize" that they had renewed the services. It is also unfortunate that the client "accepted and appreciated" the 20% discount offered to him for him not realizing he had renewed the services but made no mention to me at that he would be writing a negative review of the work based on his mistake of not realizing what services he had requested. I can assure anyone, as I did with the client, that nothing we did has damaged any shrubbery. The shrubbery is healthy but extremely overgrown. The client stated to me that they will be doing it all over in a few years because of the condition it has been in for years. It is unfortunate that they have gone this route in an effort to not pay their bill for work that they requested. If anyone would like to discuss this further with me, please email me at [email protected]."
