Auto Transmission Service
$1,200
Rebuilt transmission died after 10 & ½ months, and less than 10,000 miles. My transmission started having issues in February of 2016. Powell Transmission was recommended by someone who was recommended. They had the best price to rebuild, and he seemed knowledgeable when I spoke with him on the phone. The son did the rebuild. They had it for about two weeks, charged $1,200.00. I noticed the fluid was overfilled when I got it back, but he said it was fine. I figure he works on them, he would know. About a month later while driving from Murray to Clarksville, passing through a small town, it won’t get out of 2nd. I finally get through to him on the phone, he has me shut it off, pump the gas, and unstick the valve. I bring it back in, he has it for another two weeks, and I get it back. Seems to work. December 19, 2017 rolls around. I am headed from Evansville to Christian county to visit my parents, doing about 70 on the highway. The engine revs, the car slows down. Transmission is messed up. I pull over and check on things, finally get through to Powell. It will drive, but won’t shift past second, and for a while only will run in first. Seventy miles under 35mph, and part at only about 15mph, three and a half hours, and one flat tire later I get there. At this point it is under 10,000 miles and was only rebuilt 10&1/2 months prior. Still under warranty. He keeps the car for eight weeks to the day, putting it well out of warranty, and doesn’t bother to call me to let me know it is “fixed” for the third time. Luckily I had been calling in regularly after the third week. They left the keys in the car when I picked it up, no one was there. Now I am just hoping it won’t die on me a third time. I’ve had the valve stick/won’t shift problem twice since I’ve gotten it back, but may have worked it out from the help of a local mechanic. Time will tell. Cannot recommend. If the third time in shop and second full rebuild, assuming he did what he was paid to do, end up lasting I may change my rating. Until then, steer clear.
