Bottom line - if you live in this area Robert Smith would be your first choice if the objective is to get a "Best Value" outcome. Best Value means a fair price, willingness to work with an owner, a solid expectation of what will be done, and the ability to meet a schedule. In the end it is the positive relationship that strengthens his overall value as a contractor. He did a very good job under difficult, changing circumstances [old house, unknowns behind walls, etc.]. His better attribute is an ability to communicate - forthright and competent.
Description of Work: Robert provided major repairs to the plumbing system including primary piping replacement, china, faucets, vanities, valves, and insulation. This was a major repair and he worked closely with me to develop the scope of work, budget and schedule. I evaluated his abilities during an initial emergency repair. That was sufficient qualification to understand his capabilities surpassed the current and probable needs of this project (his capabilities extend to residential, commercial and health care facilities).

The two workers showed up early and immediately got to work. They both got right on the job and did what needed to be done, even fixing a minor issue that came up between when we scheduled and when they showed up, so even though it wasn't something we initially hired them for, they went ahead and fixed it anyway. They both were pleasant and got all of our issues fixed in a timely fashion. I have used Smith and Sons in the past and would still use them again.

. Robert gave an estimate on fixing another plumbers mistakes. He has corrected mistakes before made by this same plumber. He is sincere and does not over charge. He also fixed a leak in bathtub faucet. I was told I would have to tear out the tile to fix the leak. Robert fixed leak by changing the inside of the faucet. He did not charge since he was giving me an estimate on other problems. My husband and I have a high regard for Robert and the men he has working for him. Last year, Robert put in a water line about 1,000 ft. up the hill from main line to our house and did all of the connections. All of his work has been very satisfactory. We have been thankful to have found a reasonable great plumber.

They were very fast and got the job done in about 4 hours including going out to look for replacement parts for old toilet and sink. The way the half bath was built didn't allow the toilet to be replaced due to the shape of the base.

Smith & Sons Plumbing are exemplary contractors. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of plumbing assistance. They are capable of almost any major or minor consideration. During my time with Robert and his crew, an impressive amount of work was completed. A complete overhaul of my home's internal plumbing from piping repairs and hot water heater replacement in the basement to shower fixture replacement in the bathrooms. Carbon filters for my home's water supply were installed as well. Additionally, my basement had been experiencing a number of leaks over the last thirty years and required an expensive and complex solution; Robert was up to the challenge and came up with a plan to remove penetrating roots, refill the holes from those roots with concrete, waterproof seal the interior and exterior basement walls, and run an appropriate sewer and storm drainage system to keep water out and away from the walls. All of his efforts were successful and on time (weather permitting). Though he went over budget by a small amount, most of this is attributable to the nature of his business and a number of design/logistics changes that I made throughout the process. In the end, Robert and his team were valuable and irreplaceable contractors whom I would be very pleased to work with again.
Description of Work: Complete overhaul of internal plumbing including: shower piping and fixtures, hot water heater replacement, toilet replacement and installation, basement piping, carbon filter installation, sump pump maintenance and repair. Basement waterproofing including: interior/exterior sealant, foundation repair, sewer/storm drainage design and repair.

I just wanted to Point out that the overall total was $17,000 not $20,000, not that it's a big deal just wanted to clear that up. Just don't want people looking on here and saying that guys good but I can't afford him. You and I know how much material, time, and labor was put into all these projects but the next guy doesn't! I was pleased with the work Smith and Sons performed. Robert Smith was very nice and very professional. When they worked in the house they cleaned up after themselves. After some research the price was just a hair above average for a job this big but the work performed was well above average. I would not hesitate to use Smith and Sons again.

This was absolutely a homeowner's dream for repair jobs. I found Smith and Sons Plumbing through Angie's List and called Mr. Smith, not realizing it was after business hours. He returned my call within an hour and we made arrangements for him to go by the house the next morning and survey the work. He called me early the next morning and gave me a thorough breakdown of the problem and had a solution in mind. Later that day he called and e-mailed me with the bid for the work. I knew it would be pricey but was totally satisfied with the bid and told him to go ahead and start. I made very easy payment arrangement with him given the fact that I live out of state. He had his crew there the next day and they began the tedious work of digging the frozen ground up and working in the cold weather. When he called me two days later to tell me the job was done I was amazed. He even sent me pictures of the work they had done. I can not say enough good things about his professionalism and caring attitude. He has stayed in touch with me even after the work is done and will be going back in the spring when the ground is thawed and leveling out dirt, spreading grass seed, and covering it with straw. I have some other work that needs done in warmer weather and will definitely be calling him for this work.

Left message, call was returned within 10 minutes. An employee was here that day to check out the situation. It was determined to be less expensive to completely replace vs repair the commode. We had them order a new handicap commode and set up installation to work around our patient load. The service man was here early, waiting on us. He was quick and thorough. Explained everything he did. The owner of the company came later that day just to check the work and introduce himself. We have already called them to do jobs at home. We will continue to use them. Great guys, great prices, great work.

We were very pleased with the work. It took a little bit of time to complete the job, because they do this as a side business (so had to generally be done in the evening/after hours), but that wasn't a problem for us. We ran into some issues (not because of them, but we went through 3 different vanities before we got exactly the correct size because there was not tile underneath the old one--old and new vanities' dimensions had to be exactly same to cover that), but I felt like they were very fair and efficient in getting the job done. Mr. Smith had one of his employees complete the work, but he came over to inspect the work himself before giving us an invoice or anything. In general, I felt like he was a good person to do business with and I would recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Ripped out old vanity in downstairs bath, installed new vanity, countertop, and faucet; installed new nickel showerhead in downstairs bath; ripped out old countertops and plate glass wall mirrors in upstairs master bath; fixed drywall under old mirrors; installed new countertops and faucets in master bath; installed new faucet on garden tub in master bath.

My home is on a hill. We have an (unused) inground swimming pool. If any work was to be done in the back yard, it would have to be done by hand. There's just no way to get heavy equipment or even a pick-up truck into the yard without possibly crushing the web of drains and pipes and lines scattered beneath the pool's surrounding concrete walkway or what little swath of level yard we have back there. Saturday morning, one of Robert's people, Steve, called at 7:55am - he was in our driveway and wanted to let us know he was on the job. He dug down, found the line beyond the broken section was plugged, but above the break (towards the house) was clear. Before long, Steve was hip deep in questionable fluids (hey I'm trying to be diplomatic here!), and discovered that yes, indeed we DO have a clean out! Too bad it was located in our neighbor's yard. Truth be told, it was on our property but the (ehem) gentleman who built our subdivision was of the mind in the late 60s that a simple wave of his arm dictated where the property lines were, and well, that's where the surveyor pins went. ANYway, after getting approval from our neighbor to dig on their side of our fence to find the next section of old, original clay tile pipe that wasn't broken, Steve ended up digging at least another few hours. By hand. In a swamp. With big mosquitos. He made a supplies list and left. A few hours later, he's back at it - running the electric eel on both sides of the break. The hunks of broken clay tile that the original builders laid, patched with concrete and covered with shingles that Steve unearthed were MASSIVE. Once he found a good section (ie: not broken) of clay pipe in the middle of our neighbor's yard, he hit a stopping point. It would need more pipe and fittings to connect different size and makes of pipe - but he was leaving us with a clear running water sewer until the specialty pipe shops opened on Monday. Monday morning, Steve called again from the driveway, ready to finish the job. He put a clean out in our yard (I'm thinking of painting it and giving it a good Appalachian double name, something like Bobby Steve... "Now, [dog name], don't you go out there and pee on Bobby Steve!"), filled in both the neighbor's side of the repair and ours and buttoned everything up. He was finished by noon! We couldn't be more pleased with the work, professionalism and genuine care Smith and Sons (and crew) showed us in what was truly a nasty and embarrassing, yet human, situation. I've told everyone who asks about the true gem we came across thanks to Angie's List.
Description of Work: Robert Smith took my call in the middle of the afternoon Thursday, August 8. I explained the situation with the sewer having developed a leak, uncertain if it was ours or our neighbors. He said he would be there the next day. And he was! Right then I decided he was the one for the job, as everyone else we've called for estimates kept putting us off. Robert dug around a bit more than 'a bit', determined the issue and made a plan. He gave me an estimate and it was on.

This crisis happened when I was out-of-town, and my family had to deal with a toilet tank that kept over-filling and then draining to the bowl. Water was everywhere, and no one at home could stop the flood. I made calls to plumbers while the family cleaned up the water as best they could. Steve arrived and got the tank fill system working properly, and he made sure the drain was clear and free-flowing. This wasn't an exotic repair, but the work as done QUICKLY and CORRECTLY. The cost of service is estimated -- I'm guessing 1-1/2 times a one hour minimum. Rob Smith will send me a bill. Thank you, Steve and Rob!
Description of Work: Smith & Sons Plumbing quickly responded to my plumbing emergency - after hours & within 30 minutes of my call! Rob Smith phoned ahead to say Steve was at the house ready clear the blockage.
