We contracted with the estimator Matt while he was removing my neighbor's large ash tree. I was amazed with the size of the crane they used to remove my neighbor's tree without damaging all of the other trees around it. Matt gave me an estimate to remove 3 trees that was very competitive with the cost of treating the trees for the next three years by a competitor ---- with no guarantee that the treatment would work. A simple choice.
A competitor had removed another dead ash tree on my property last year -- so I knew approximately what the cost would be. The competitor's crane was much smaller & they were only able to remove a small section of the top of the tree they removed. The rest of the tree was cut into 2 foot rounds and dropped onto the lawn below. In the process the competitor broke some branches on some adjacent trees and left some pretty sizeable divots in the lawn for me to deal with.
By contrast, the boom on the crane used by Above & Beyond was large enough to take 24-30' sections of tree from the back of my property, lift them over the other 60 foot trees on the property and drop the sections in my driveway or the street where the limbs were bucked & shredded. The remaining logs were cut into 12-15 foot sections and lifted into their dumpster.
Cleanup around the yard was excellent ---- things looked better than when they started.
While they were working here, other neighbors were favorably impressed with their work & the following day they removed three more large ash trees from my neighborhood that were in in close proximity to other trees ---- also without any damage.
I would suggest that if you want to minimize the size of the remaining stump that you remove the soil in about a 2-3 foot radius around your tree before they start the job --- maybe 6 inches below grade. The sawyer can get the chain saw lower on the base of the tree when he does his final cut if you do this.
"The sealer price went up to $1300 per year. This was due to sealer price increase, not anything we could have known."
They say you can't judge a book by it's cover and I would say - While Angie's List USUALLY gets the contractor right, the reports missed the mark this time. While I was concerned by the reports I saw, my mom decided to hire Dan and his crew anyway. I am now eating
crow, as they came in, removed the tree, raked the yard & after my mom mentioned there were still branches on the top of the roof, Dan had his crew climb up on the roof & get them down. The ONLY issue was that they left the tree on my mom's front yard overnight, as it was late when they took the tree down. A better approach might have been to either wait till the morning to remove it as that section of her yard will need to be reseeded. Given the 90+ degrees outside each day, it's not a big deal this year, but it could be for others. They did exactly what they promised, were polite & cleaned up the debris. On of the workers even helped my mom get her garage door down since the power had gone out!
Overall, I would absolutely rehire!
"We did come back and remove trees. He was supposed to fix this rating."
"We removed a very large tree and had no other way to do without a crane. [name removed] knew that we had to bring in the crane."
