One of our air conditioners exhibited a shortage of coolant condition.
We initially called the company that installed both units. This was on Sunday, the day before Memorial Day. A discussion of the unit's status resulted in conjecture of whether the unit may need replacement. That is, the potential service man asked the unit's age and when he learned that it was +10 years oid and probably in need of refrigerant, he stated that once they're leaking, a new unit may be necessary. Because this prepare-the-customer-for-a-big expense talk prior to diagnosing the condition raised a red flag in my mind and the fact that coming out on Memorial Day was problematic for him, I called a gent recommended to me individually by my brother-in-law, my son, and my son's friend.
Upon speaking with Steve Richardson and discussing the A/C's condition, he made no attempt to prepare me for bad news. After my previous experience, I obviously took this to be a good sign. And when I asked when he could come out and he said tomorrow -- Memorial Day, I asked if there would be a holiday up-charge, Steve said no -- another good sign.
Steve arrived on Memorial Day at the time promised, in fact he was a few minutes early. He diagnosed the problem with the one unit and supplied the needed coolant. While he was here, I asked him to do a cleaning and check of the 2nd unit.. After +10 years, it too needed some refrigerant. Steve buttoned up both units, advised that I probably wouldn't need his services again this year and off he went.
Because my son and brother-in-law each expressed an appreciation for Steve's candor and knowledge, while here, I found Steve to be likewise -- very personable, and knowledgeable.
As the previous reviewer suggested, if you're looking for a HVAC company with multiple trucks and catchy radio jingles, Steve isn't your man. But if you're looking for a reasonably priced, reliable, honest and dependable technician, Steve is definitely your man, so much so, that I told him to give me a jingle when the heating season arrived, so he could service both units for that purpose.
It's good finding a service technician that has all the positive traits of a Steve Richardson and doing so by word of mouth is an even better method of locating good service -- one of the reasons I am an Angie's List member and why I also prefer using the experiences of friends and relatives to select a service provider.

I had 8am appt for estimate & they arrived a few minutes early. I called next day to accept offer, they promised to be there by 9am the next morning to install & they arrived a little after 8am. I needed to leave for work & felt that I didn't need to worry about not being there. I confirmed that I could write check for the estimated amount (no extra charges). They called me early that afternoon to let me know they were finishing up. I got home that night to a nice cool home. If you are looking for a big, well advertised heating & cooling firm, these are not the guys. If you are looking for someone to do a job at the price they say, I would definitely recommend Steve Richardson of Richardson Heating & Cooling.
