Responsiveness:
This summer, we disassembled our deck and replaced it with a patio. Based on our previous experience with Ponce Patios, we contacted Ruben again to obtain a patio quote. For both patios, Ruben, from the very beginning, was very responsive and professional with us. In both instances, he promptly came out to survey the area and discuss exactly what we wanted. Ruben is easy to work with and suggests alternative ideas that may be appealing to what you are trying to achieve. In terms of determining the start dates for the patio projects, Ruben was always right on time and completed the projects within the stated timeframe. He is very accessible; a significant amount of our communication was done via text / email as well.
Quality:
Ruben and his crew do quality work. Everything (in our case anyway) was done by hand and with care. The methods that he follows are the same methods that larger hardscape companies follow. Care is taken to make sure everything is square and level. Excavation depth, gravel, geotex fabric, compaction, sand, and polymer sand are all installed according to best practices. The sitting wall blocks are also installed using best practices, ensuring that the base of the sitting wall is at the correct depth and the gravel is compacted to provide a solid foundation. The sitting wall blocks are glued using exterior landscape glue.
Price:
Ruben has always quoted fair pricing. In fact, he has always been the lowest pricing when compared to a larger hardscape company. Obviously, he does not have the "overhead" of other larger, more diverse hardscape companies.
Overall, I would not hesitate recommending Ponce Patios to anyone that is interested in having a patio installed.
We hired Ponce Patios to build the retaining walls and install a patio with the materials that he told us to purchase from Indiana Mulch and Stone. Unfortunately the materials to build the retaining walls were not correct. The materials he had us purchase should only be used for walls that are approximately 24"-30" tall. The retaining walls we have range from 36"-72". When the original project was completed it looked good and we were satisfied with the work. However a year and a half later the retaining walls were pulling away and ready to fall over. I contacted Ruben at Ponce Patios and he said he only provided a one year warranty and wanted to charge me $1,400.00 to repair the wall. I told that was unacceptable and the walls should not fall over after a year and a half. He said it was a bad winter and that was the cause. I looked at my neighbors walls and they looked great and had been in place for over 7 years. I then spoke to an engineer and he said the walls were installed incorrectly and the wrong materials were used. When I spoke to Ruben he stated that I bought the materials so he was not responsible. When I try to explain that I bought what he told me to purchase he kept referring back to the one year warranty. I then had to hire another company to rebuild the walls and they proceeded to tell me not only were the materials not correct the installation was also incorrect. When I tried to contact Ponce Patios to inform him of this they would still only refer to their one year warranty. As a consumer I would not know what materials to use to build retaining walls or how to install the walls but I do now!! Ponce Patios should NOT be in the business of building retaining walls since they do not know what they are doing. I had to pay $14,000.00 to correct this problem!
Consumers need to know that Ponce Patios is not a reliable company and do not stand behind their work!!
thanks for your time.
"Thank you for your comment, We are always trying to get better as a company, but in this particular case, if you remember we did not pick the materials for you. We only provided the labor following the plans of the designer you hired. In this case the labor we provided was correct and well done, unfortunately the problem here was the quality of the materials you purchased. This is the reason why we provide our customers with a one year guarantee, so that we can make sure of our customers satisfaction with our labor. If the labor performed by us would have been done incorrectly, the retaining wall would have collapsed before the year, this is how we know it was done right. Thank you again."
Hired Ponce Patios to replace an existing retaining wall. There price was a little high, but selected them due to their write-up in the Angie's List magazine. They did an excellent job of building the retaining wall and that is why I ranked them as an "A" in quality. Unfortunately, that is where my positive comments will end.
Upon completion of the job, we agreed to meet so that I could review their work and settle the obligation. Unfortunately I made the mistake of paying him in full with the agreement that he would return and remove the waste created from breaking up the old retaining wall. Between 2 and 3 weeks later I followed up with a text and asked if they would come remove the waste as agreed. I indicated that I was concerned my young daughters could be hurt and the owner responded with "OK". Another 3 weeks passed and I again follow up via text. I reminded him that I had paid him in full with the understanding that he would complete the agreed upon task. To this follow up he responded with "lol".
I sincerely hope that all Angie's List members remember this complete lack of professionalism before making their final contractor selection. If they do, we will see how long he will continue to laugh out loud.
As I said before, they did excellent work in the construction of the wall. If they would come and complete their efforts with the removal of the waste I would be glad to change my review; however, at this time I feel an obligation to let others know of my poor experience.
The patio looks good - they did a quality job.
Here are 2 concerns/complaints about this operation:
1) they don't take credit cards. slightly shady in my opinion - they only take checks / cash. Don't like this at all.
2) I had 20 bags each of paver sand / paver rock base sitting out back. There were also 2 pallets there that were used to deliver the materials (I bought the pavers and materials from Lowe's 2 years ago). I asked Ruben if he would take the pallets and the paver sand / rock base with him. He said he could take the pallets the day of install, great. He said he would definitely take the paver sand / rock base, but he would have to come back that day or the next day.
By the end of the next day, I hadn't heard from Ruben. I texted him about it and he replied "My friend not callme back.sorry give me couple days I pickup thnks." This was Tuesday evening.
Friday comes and still nobody has shown up. I text Ruben again and ask him to pick up the bags Friday or Saturday, and he responds "Ok.".
Saturday evening comes and still nothing. I text him one last time, asking him if he is going to come to get sand & rock base today, he replies "Monday.".
At this point I've had it. I posted an ad on Craigslist in the 'free' section (which is what I should've done in the first place) and the sand & rock is literally gone within an hour.
The point is, if Ruben didn't want the sand & rock base, all he had to do was say so. But continuing to lie to me about picking it up, always saying "tomorrow, or the next day" just ended up p****** me off. It's poor communication and poor customer service.
I have already given friends and family members their contact information.
I could not be more pleased!
