 + -1 moreHe came out and went down and looked at everything and then made an estimate. He wrote about 8-9 things that he felt needed to be done. We declined all the other sales items, we just wanted him to address the emergency issue at hand. He fixed the issue, but then after he left, the smell was horrible, even worse than before he came. He said that he could do something to help the smell (which was an additional $50). My husband went down and checked out what was going on, and they had knocked loose the duct work that leads off of the furnace and the smell was being sucked right into the furnace and was being distributed all through out the house. We called Metzler to tell them about the problem, and they confirmed with the technician it had happened. I requested they rectify the situation by giving us a 50% discount on the emergency service fee. What they wanted to do was give me $50 off the bill and my $25 Angie's List discount. I was very disappointed in the service we were given.
Description of Work: We had an emergency plumbing job (our sewage line came loose).

drain cleaning
 + -1 moreCalled Metzler Plumbing 1/11, appt. scheduled for 1/15. They said someone might get out on Saturday; and would call to let me know if no one was able to come. No one called or came. On Monday a pleasant representative came first thing in the morning, but did not have the right snake for a main drain clog. Also quoted price to correct lack of drain access. Another plumbing service (who was able to complete the work later that morning), noticed that there was a drain access-eliminating the need for more work. The Metzler rep. and office rep. told me they didn't realize that my main drain needed attention, so they didn't know to have the larger equipment with them. The second company said the necessary equipment was standard with their plumbers. They also provided an estimate of $417 to replace the existing tub and shower faucets with faucet I recently purchased. Declined due to the expense.
Description of Work: Could only provide estimate to snake clogged main drain. Was unable to complete the job as did not have the equipment available until late in the day or next morning.

water heater repair
 + -1 moreI was in Washington, D.C., visiting my daughter for the holidays; my 85-year-old mother was taking care of my home and cats. She noticed water leaking on Christmas night and phoned me. I checked Angie's List; found reports for a contractor I'd used in the past. Phoned them and arranged for someone to check the situation; they scheduled a date and time just a couple days after Christmas. Arrived on time; assessed problem and phoned me on my cell phone. We had a lengthy discussion about whether or not to simply remove the leaking water heater and cap off water lines or replace it. I opted to replace it. The contractor completed the work, including removal of my old water heater, and cleaned up site thoroughly the same day he gave me the estimate. The contractor was efficient, thorough, friendly, and quite willing to answer all my questions. Plus he went beyond what he said he would do by adding shut-off valves - and then phoned again to completely explain the work he had done for me.
Description of Work: Replaced leaking gas water heater with a new one of comparable size; without being requested to do so, inspected lines and added shut-off valves at no extra charge. I had originally thought about just having the water heater removed since I had two (one of which was new last year). Hallam's representative was willing to do what I asked but advised me that with a whirlpool tub in one of my bathrooms, a future buyer might not be comfortable with only one water heater to provide enough hot water. (No pressure - just an explanation) I took his advice and replaced the water heater at the agreed upon price.

 + -1 moreThe plumber came unprepared-his work light had burned out and he had no flashlight. We gave him a replacement bulb and told him what the problem was, also that there was a second pump in the front of the house. He told us that it would be ''unethical'' for him to fix our noisy pump because it was hooked up to the city sewer and should be run outdoors. We pointed out that Metzler had installed our first pump and it ran to the sewer line. He still insisted we'd have to route the water outdoors and then they could replace the noisy valve. He didn't even check the other sump pump (which, we found out later, wasn't working at all). The estimate seemed awfully high for rerouting a piece of pipe to a different location, so we parted company with Metzler. The good news is they were prompt and neat, which we value.
Description of Work: We asked them to fix an unusually noisy sump pump. Their estimate was very high (over $600) so we paid their trip charge and declined their offer. A couple of days later we contacted another company, who charged less to fix the problem and, included in the lower price, replaced another sump pump which Metzler had charged us $600 for installing two years before.

 + 0 moreWas able to resolve the drain problems in the basement during estimate of work. Identified that sump pump just needed to be restarted. Added extension to existing water line to run new line for the ice maker, kept line away from exterior wall of the house. Overall, very quick and helpful service and had a much better solution for the ice maker line than we could have imagined! My only surprise during the day was that I had the call he was coming at 7:15 am, instead of the 9-ish time I was expecting.
Description of Work: Ran a new line for the ice maker hookup since existing line would not fit around refrigerator. Looked at drain problems in basement.

However, I wasn't very confident in his advice since it disagreed with one of my favorite plumbers on This Old House. I wasn't very happy with the job since the plumber marked up the facet with his tools. The price also seemed high for just fixing a leaking facet. The work took about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

He took the time to answer all of my MANY questions, teach me about sump pumps and treated me with complete professionalism. He wore booties in the house to keep my house clean and cleaned up the area after he finished working in it. After two positive experiences with Metzler, they (and George) will always be my first call for plumbing questions/issues. I didn't feel like I was ripped off or undercharged.
Description of Work: George diagnosed that I needed to replace my sump pump and then did the work to clean it. He also answered multiple random plumbing questions that I had and gave me estimates to fix two leaks.

 + 0 moreJob 1: He was on time and the job was done quickly. Job 2: I was pleased with the service and the information provided. The first step was diagnosis of a toilet leak and the estimates to repair or replace. Since the repair was quite expensive, we opted to replace and scheduled for another time. There was no charge for that visit. We scheduled a visit to replace a toilet and then I found a toilet that I liked better than what was to be brought so got it myself and had them install it. Meanwhile, our water heater started having problems and we found a leak in our basement ceiling so managed to have a long, expensive, multi-faceted repair.
Description of Work: Job 1: Old water softener was removed.($115.) Job 2: Replacement of water heater and toilet, diagnostic work on leak.($1195.)

 + -1 morePlumber came on time and was very polite. The water had been turned off to prevent further leakage. Plumber turned on the water, checked to see if the water was getting hot (which it was), and said he could find no problem. Thirty minutes after he left, the tank flooded the carpet again. I had already purchased a replacement water heater, but he didn't seem interested in replacement. I had hoped that at least I could use the Angie's List coupon to pay for the service call, but he said it could only be used for a repair. He did call a few days later to see if the water heater was working, but his suggestion was to install a drip pan under the unit (for a sizable cost). I will not use this plumbing company again.
Description of Work: Hired to repair or replace 2 1/2 gallon water heater under bar sink. It had been leaking water in cabinet and on carpeting.

 + -1 moreMetzler came in on time as scheduled and performed the inspection. The smell was thought to be from the exposed septic drains, and this would be solved after toilet installation. Metzler's quotes on toilets was extremely high, so we purchased toilets on our own & paid Metzler to install 2, & due to cost. I would install the third. After toilet installation, we still had noxious fumes spreading throughout the house, and the 2 toilets Metzler installed flushed slowly and leaked. The toilet I installed performed fine. Metzler came back out to correct the leaks, but I had to pay for the leak repairs because we did not buy the toilets from Metzler. In addition, the slow flushing toilet was inspected, adjusted and tested with a piece of tissue that flushed satisfactorily. The problem is that the toilet still did not flush any "material" contents. I'm not a plumber, but I explained how to fix both the smell and the toilet (with a larger alligator flipper), finally fixing both.
Description of Work: We purchased a 20 year old house and wanted the plumbing checked, toilets installed and the septic tank smell solved. We asked for the inspection because the house had under gone incomplete re-modeling to include bathroom fixtures. We informed Metzler of a shower that was removed, and suggested that this might also be a cause of the odor. We lived with this odor after 6 trips from Metzler and several noxious weeks.

 + -1 moreThey came the next day exactly when they said they would be there. The problem wasn't with my water heater - the thermostat had just been moved and the dial was faded. They remarked my dial, put it on the proper setting and told me I didn't need any new equipment. It would have been very easy to say I needed something new but they were honest.

The guys who first stopped by to see if they could fix the heater (ie. a pilot light issue), usually worked new construction, so they were a little outside of their element. They came as a courtesy because no one else was available until later to help me. The man who came to do the actual replacement was great. Work completed quickly.

He did the work quickly and did not complain about having to go down into a damp, dark crawlspace. I would have preferred to have paid less, but I think that the cost is what most companies would charge.
Description of Work: The plumber removed an unused gas line that ran from the kitchen into the crawl space. He capped it off down there.

 + 0 moreFred was EXTREMELY friendly and full of good advice, despite being up all night with his sick wife. He came on time, did the job and was pleasant. We become friends.
Description of Work: Fred fixed a kitchen sink leak caused by an old and "holey" disposal, and replaced the disposal. The disposal costs too much, but that's the going price, I think. He also replaced our water heater in the garage, also expensive, but it was full of sediment. He had to call in help to lift it and remove and replace it. He also fixed an outdoor faucet. Plumbing costs too much, but I do not blame the company.
