Further more they stand behind their work and after being paid and the job done we had a minor concern over a door adjustment and they came out and took care of it right away. The value that this crew brings is really in the many years experience and taking the time to make sure the job is done right and you are satisfied.
UPDATE: Below is a copy of an e-mail I sent to Tom Phelps on Saturday 9-13-2014 and his response on Sunday 9-14-2014. This was 5-6 weeks before the beginning of the work. The layout drawings and kitchen views were attached to this e-mail. Included in the e-mail was the brand of cabinets we finalized the project on, the name of the designer, his phone number and his e-mail. Tom acknowledges receipt of this e-mail by saying he will contact him with any questions. Tom had this information 5-6 weeks prior to beginning the work and in fact I sent this information to him several times during this 5-6 week period. Tom's crew installed both runs of the base cabinets 3/4" short of what the layout drawings showed they should be. They installed the filler pieces in the wrong orientation causing the base cabinet runs to be short. He would not take responsibility for this and even to this day will not. I don't know if he is purposefully being misleading or can't remember, but either way it is his responsibility as the contractor to manage the job and he did not do a very good job on my project. He even states this was a 3 week job and the counter tops took 3 weeks, this is 6 weeks. The work took 12 weeks to complete. We started well in advance and should have been done by Christmas, but Tom did not finish until almost New Years so our house was a mess during the holidays which we planned properly to have the work done except for the poor job of managing the project.
Email: [member name], I will call the cabinet guy on Monday. The panel should always come a little larger than the exact size of the cabinetry. The crown molding should be fine at two and five eighths. Thanks for the information, now I can see what you are talking about. Have a good weekend, Tom
On Saturday, September 13, 2014 4:57 PM,
Tom: Here are the view layouts of the kitchen. If you open [member name] you will see the back of the peninsula. The two doors tot he left actually open and are a cabinet. The two tot he right are a single width panel with the doors applied. My cabinet guys question is since this covers the back of a 18 & 15" cabinets do you want this exactly 33" wide or would you like it a little wide, say 1/4" so you have extra to trim if you need it. I am purchasing cabinets from Direct plus. Medallion brand. My contact there is Jim. 317-337-1400 they are closed on Sun & Mon. Would you consider calling him to get more clarity on why this might be necessary? He seems to think it might be when mating the panel to the actual cabinet next to it. Not sure why? Thanks. "This customer asked me to give him a price on installation of a custom kitchen designed and built by a company I am familiar with for their integrity in design and production of quality products. Based on the print Mr. [Member Name Removed] gave me from that company I gave him a bid to install the cabinets and do the plumbing and electrical involved. I figured this job would take two weeks, one week for mechanicals and one for installation of cabinetry. After securing that bid the customer changed cabinet suppliers without consulting us at all. He purchased and designed the kitchen over the phone with someone else. I decided to go ahead with the installation. We did not get a print until we were 4 days into the installation, we were provided with an animated inaccurate computer generated picture that later proved not to be the layout of the cabinets delivered. not known to us The design incorporated upper cabinets that could not be installed until the lower cabinets and the tops were installed. He then informed me he expected to wait 3 weeks for tops to be made because of the design. This problem was not my fault It was the fault of POOR Design .I am sorry for the stress he brought upon himself. Tom Phelps owner"
Job was pushed out 2 weeks passed this date. Only problem for us was that we had a painter scheduled to come after they were to have completed their work. Job started on July 23-25th.
Job completed and looked good. His son was prompt in returning to fix the soffitt below the window.
Tom is a very kind and hard-working man. His sons helped with the project as well.
Was pleased with overall completed project.
UPDATED 8/18/12 :
They did end up calling to reschedule and they came today. They were very professional.
"I am responsible for missing the meeting and not calling , I did contact you as soon as i discovered the meeting had been missed and made arrangements to meet with you at a different time. this meeting did not get transfered into my calander. Honest Mistake Thomas Phelps ( owner Phelps& Sons Construction LLC )"
When estimates come in with all potential problems laid out before they start, it goes a long way in creating confidence. The project did take 9 weeks which I thought was a little long, but then, we did go a little crazy on our tile design. Tom did that job himself because his main tile guy was busy on another project. But the results were wonderful Tom also had a chance to do the woodworking he so good at,. built and installed a three door wide, 5" deep medicine cabinet. Since we opted out of a vanity, the custom cabinet holds everything we need. Everyone who sees the room says it fits the style of the house and looks like it might have been original.
Team came in and removed old shower. very impressed with how they covered everything in the adjoining bedroom to cut down on dust. Sub contractors were polite and came when scheduled. Everything finished in about 3 weeks. Took about a week longer because I added additional fixtures in the smaller bathrooms and waited for those to arrive before so plumber had to make only one trip.
Very impressed with Tom and his employees. Will use him again.
