+ -1 moreWe have a service agreement with them and they come out every 6 months and check our furnace and air-conditioning unit. They are very reliable and we are most pleased with them. They are punctual and will call and let you know if they are going to be late and they are very good.

+ -1 moreOne thing that impressed me was that he actually took measurements of the entire facility, climbed up into the attic area to inspect the insulation level, and then computed the size of the unit we needed. They seemed to go the extra step to tell us what we really needed. The unit was a more efficient process force than we initially had; it was a smaller unit. I appreciated their thoroughness with the process. They were able to replace the unit within a relatively short timeframe.
Description of Work: They inspected our unit. We had a unit failure and they came in and provided us bids to replace that unit. We ended up selecting them as the vendor of choice.

+ -1 moreKen Appel came out and did what none of the other contractors did who gave me a quote. Ken actually measured my house, looked at the windows, attic insulation etc. and determined what size AC & Furnace I truly needed. He also recommended that I change out the lines from the AC unit to the furnace as they were contaminated by the lightning strike. The cost was no extra than what the other contractors quoted.

+ -1 moreNate came out for an estimate to replace furnace and a/c. Provided estimate promptly and answered follow up questions promptly. Did not end up using b/c we found a slightly better deal elsewhere. Only possible issue is he claimed to do a Manual J analysis, which he couldn't have done based on the time spent in the house and the measurments required to do the calculations. He did an exterior measurement and did do heat and and cooling requirements based on that, which is more than any of the other 4 bidders did, so I don't fault him for that. I just don't think it was an official Manual J.

+ -1 moreThey are a good company who are proficient in the area of heating and air conditioning. They have good technicians who are knowledgeable. They are an established company with a good reputation for trustworthiness and competency. I talked to a representative and she explained in detail what I needed done and how much it would cost. She suggested we may need a new unit in the future, but indicated they would do the repairs and that it would probably be sufficient for the remainder of the summer. I appreciated that they didn't pressure me to purchase a new unit. I would hire them in the future.
Description of Work: We were getting ready to go on vacation and I wanted to make sure that the air conditioning didn't go out while we were gone because we had a house sitter. They serviced and cleaned my air conditioning unit.

+ -1 moreCalled on a Saturday morning after AC stopped working the evening before. Technician arrived same day - they were the only company out of the five I called who were able to send a technician. Immediately after arriving tech checked the heat pump, found the faulty capacitor and immediately replaced it with another part on-hand. Tech also checked blower, ventilation and told me the pros/cons of doing further blower maintenance on a 20 year old furnace. One odd thing - tech punctured the ventilation for the return as well as the outbound blower ducts to get an internal temperature reading. While this probably gave him an immediate and more accurate reading on the heat pump's efficiency, it did leave two puncture holes in the ducts I had to seal later. Price was very reasonable, considering this was a weekend call.
Description of Work: Heat pump had died (and on the first day of the year with a heat advisory, no less) and compressor would not respond. Technician on call came out, immediately checked capacitor, replaced the faulting cap and got the heat pump working again within five minutes. Did a quick check of freon levels & checked blower as well, replaced filters.

+ -1 moreOur oil furnace died on a Thursday night. After Appel's visit on Friday, we learned that we needed a part for it that was only available at the manufacturer's plant in Canada. After the part failed to show up on time, they followed up and learned that the manufacturer had not shipped the part as promised. Appel demanded that they overnight the part, which they did. Upon arrival, it was determined that the manufacturer had shipped the wrong part. Appel went out of their way to find another means to get the correct part and rushed it over to our house upon receipt, installed it and got our furnace working again (on Christmas Eve!). Even though it took 12 days to get the right part, I commend Appel for their efforts to speed up the process and get our furnace working again. They came over a couple of times before the right part arrived to clean out the furnace and remove the broken part. They did not charge us anything for the shipping of the overnighted part. As we were using space heaters, one of the employees even volunteered to come and check them while we were out of the house at a family holiday party. They handled a tough situation with excellent service and now have a loyal customer.

+ -1 moreThe furnace malfunctioned and Steve came out the same morning and determined the fan motor was not working. Since the repair would cost approx. $450 and the furnace was 18 years old I inquired about the cost of a new furnace. The same day Nathan came and provided us with various estimates for a new furnace and we selected a 95% effecient furnace to qualify for the various tax credits available. The next morning Brent and Rick installed the new furnace and thermostat and removed the old furnace and were finished by 4 pm. They did an excellent job of installing the furnace.

+ -1 moreWe spent over $700.00 with Appel for nothing. Eight months later we are spending another $1100.00 to have this thing fixed. The tech from the company we are using now is going to put in writing what he found and also try and correct it so maybe we can get another 10 years out of this system like we should have had to begin with. I'm sorry, Appel. We really liked you guys, until, we found out what we learned thought this experience.
Description of Work: This report probably will not matter much compared to all of the glowing reports (one of which is mine from some time back) but we are more than upset with Appel. Our compressor failed on our heat pump. Appel came out and advised it was not their fault, even though the system was supposed to be thoroughly checked last June by them and would not even consider honoring their one year parts/labor warranty. We had two other companies come out and advise us on their opinions of our problems with the compressor. BOTH said we should not have had an issue 8 months later if Appel had done their job. BOTH companies said they would love to have our business, but suggested we first check with Appel to see if they would honor their warranty. Appel would not. They said the problem had nothing to do with what they worked on last June and seemed to not even care if we considered going to another company to have the work done. We have gone with another company,and the tech is fixing the issue as I type. Unfortunately, he is having a time of it as he advised the wiring was done incorrectly and has caused more issues. In this day and age, it amazes me that businesses don't even seem to care about keeping customers and checking the quality of their work. We should have known when the guy was here from Appel working on the compressor last June and spending most of his time telling us stories of how he had fallen asleep on the job and was in trouble with the boss, that our work would not be done correctly.

Had a competitor out once in December who said nothing was wrong, yet our electric usage for Dec and Jan were double that for last year. Got estimates from Appel and one other. Appel's estimate was almost $1000 less. Estimator was great - no pressure or sales tactics, just straightforward. Got estimate on Wednesday, called back to schedule on Thursday and job was complete by Friday at 7:00pm. Installers arrived promptly on Friday am, stayed all day without taking lunch or any breaks and completed the job. Had a follow up visit on Monday to see that we were completely satisfied and answer any questions. We had a good experience with Appel all around. They are a smaller locally owned business and that makes a difference in our book.
