"Thanks for the awesome review!"
"HI , We're glad to hear you got to your destination safely, but we're sorry to hear that some items were damaged in the process. If you haven't filed out a claim yet, please call 866-343-9353 to do so. Thank you for your feedback! Sincerely, Mordue M&S"
I spoke with Ken Callear, VP of Sales at Mordue Moving, about a small in-town move. He gave me a great pitch about the experience of their moving team, how they are one of the main household movers of the largest company here in Peoria, and that I could pay less somewhere else, but they are the best in town, and you get what you pay for. For the difference between $300 and $400, I would rather get quality, and I did read a couple good reviews about them, so I went ahead and gave him specifics of each item and number of boxes that were to be moved (I was already packed, and knew exact numbers) and was told that for the amount of items and the short distance that I was moving, he did not need to come out to see anything, and that my move would take no more than 3 hours due to the experience of their full-time moving crews. I decided that I would be ok paying the 4 hour minimum for a Saturday move rather than take a vacation day from work. I asked what happened if the move ended up taking more than 4 hours, and he reassured me that it would not be an issue, but told me that if I had a budget and it was going to take more than 4 hours, they would simply unpack everything into one room rather than throughout the house and they would meet the 4 hours.
I got two phone calls the week before my move, both saying that the movers would arrive between 8 and 10. On my moving day at 10:30 AM, I called to see where the movers were, and was told that my move was scheduled between 12 and 2. Five minutes later, I was called by the mover who said he was running late and would arrive between 2 and 2:30. At this point, I scrambled to cancel the cable guy, a plumber, and an electrician who I had scheduled to arrive later that afternoon / evening at the new house.
The two movers did finally arive, but spent between 10 and 15 minutes on each piece of furniture, wrapping them in 5 or 6 completely unnecessary layers of padding and tape and plastic wrap for the tremendous 4 mile move that they were about to embark on. For half of the time spent moving out of the house, one mover was standing behind the truck on his cell phone arranging a sitter for his child due to them running late. They finally finished packing the truck (3 hours later), and drove to a gas station where they stopped for drinks. When they arrived at the new house, they began moving items in, which went very slowly until another crew member came to replace the one who needed to leave to watch his kids.
When I asked the movers about the 4 hour gaurantee that I got from Ken, they told me that is not how it works, the salesmen don't know anything about how the moves really work and that they constantly mess up the schedules. The movers finally finished my supposed 3 hour move after 6 hours, asking for $630. I had $400 on me, which I paid them, and told them to have their manager call me to work out the details of the rest of the payment.
When I did finally receive a call, it was from their collections department, demanding payment for the remaining $230. They looked up my file, and told me that I was scheduled for 11-1 (this is now the third different time I was told for my move). I told them that, and they realized they were looking at the wrong person's file - they found the right file, but never confirmed the set time of my move. I explained the issues of the move, the promise made by Ken, and the fact that I had to pay cancellation fees for contractors because they were 6 hours late, and was transferred to Ken, who also ended up looking at the wrong file, and then decided to give me $30 off for some time that one mover was on the phone, and then told me that if I didn't pay, the movers didn't get paid, so they would go hungry. Nice guilt trip work there.
I called back a week later after I got a letter from the collections department, again demanding payment for the full $230 (not the $200 that Ken agreed on) and was told that I would get a call from a manager. I called two more times, was never transferred to a manager, and finally gave up and paid the $200 to avoid this going to collections and showing up on my credit report. After making the payment, I told them that I would be posting information online about this move, and contacting the BBB, and they said they didn't care. This company seems like they only care about their corporate customers, not their private ones. So much for going with the local brand.
